Serum Level of Vitamin C in a Sample of Egyptian Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

Background: Antioxidants such as vitamin C can eliminate free radicles responsible for oxidative stress. Objective: To assess the serum level of vitamin C in a sample of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients to investigate a possible role of vitamin C in the pathogenesis of MS. Subjects and Methods: Forty patients with MS and twenty healthy controls were included in this study. Vitamin C level was estimated for each participant. Results: Serum vitamin C levels were significantly lower among the patients (ranging from 0.28 mg/dL to 0.75 mg/dL with mean 0.47 ± 0.14 mg/dL and median of 0.46 mg/dL) compared to controls (ranging from 0.60 mg/dL to 2.90 mg/dL with mean 1.87 ± 0.61 mg/dL and median of 1.90 mg/dL) (P Conclusion: Patients with MS tended to have low serum vitamin C levels, and younger patients had lower serum levels.

Male Breast Cancer:10-Year Experience at Mansoura University Hospital in Egypt

Objective Male breast cancer （MBC） is a rare disease representing less than 1% of all malignancies. The objective of the study is to report clinicopathological characteristics, treatment patterns, and outcomes of MBC in Mansoura University Hospital, Egypt. Methods This retrospective study focused on male breast cancer patients during 10 years （2000-2009）. The studied variables were data regarding general characteristics of patients, treatment modalities and survival. Results The series included 37 patients （0.8% of all breast cancer）. The median age was 57.7 years （range： 26-86 years）. The main clinical complaint was a mass beneath the areola ill 94.5% of the cases. Most patients had a locally advanced disease. 94.5% of tumors were invasive duct carcinomas. The treatment was essentially surgery in 91.8%, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy （in 89.2%）, hormonal therapy （in 56.7%） and chemotherapy （in 91.8%）. Follow-up period ranged from 6-115 months. Local recurrence occurred in 4 cases and metastasis in 11 cases. The 2-year and 5-year overall survival （OS） rates were 81.6% and 60.5%, respectively. The 2-year and 5-year disease-free survival （DFS） rates were 68.4%, and 52.6%, respectively. OS was not significantly affected by any of the studied parameters. Factors influencing DFS were： T stage （P=0.05）, positive lymph nodes （P=0.043）, metastasis （P=0.004）, and chemotherapy （1＇=0.046）. Conclusions MBC is a rare disease and often diagnosed at a locally advanced stage. The management of male and female breast carcinoma is identical. Future research for better understanding of this disease is needed to improve the management and prognosis of male breast cancer patients.

Multi-Objective Multi-Dimensional Transportation: A Case Study to the Flow of the Commodities of the Main Roads to Main Nodes in the North Western Coastal Strip of Egypt

The distribution of merchandises and commodities from source towns to final destinations is a vital issue. The job of transporter’s decisions can be optimized by reformulating the transportation problem as generalization of the classical transportation problems. Multiobjective multi-dimensional transportation network is considered the extension of conventional two-dimensional transportation network and is convenient for dealing with transportation systems with multiple supply nodes, multiple demand nodes, as well as diverse modes of transportation demands or delivering multiple kinds of merchandises. In this study, we implement an improved Biogeography based optimization IBBO to the flow of the commodities of the main roads to main nodes in the North Western Coastal Strip of Egypt, where there are four main roads and three nodes. The proposed algorithm incorporates the dominance criteria to handle multiple objective functions which enable the decision maker to cover all the Pareto frontier of the problem which have a large-scale size. Numerical results were reported in order to establish the real computational burden of the proposed algorithm and to assess its convergence performances for solving real geographical problem.
