Effect of dietary vitamin C on gastric cancer risk in the Korean population

AIM: To investigate the effects of dietary vitamin C and foods containing vitamin C on gastric cancer ***: Our study included 830 control subjects and 415 patients. Data regarding demographics, medical history, and lifestyle, including dietary and nutrient intake, were collected using reliable selfadministered questionnaires. Dietary intake information was collected from the participants using a food frequency questionnaire that has been previously reported as reliable and valid. A rapid urease test and a histological evaluation were used to determine the presence of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection. Twenty-three vitamin C-contributing foods were selected, representing over 80% of the cumulative vitamin C contribution. RESULTS: In analyses adjusted for first-degree family history of gastric cancer, education level, job, household income, smoking status, and regular exercise, an inverseassociation between vitamin C intake and gastric cancer risk was observed for the highest(≥ 120.67 mg/d) vs the lowest(< 80.14 mg/d) intake category [OR(95%CI): 0.64(0.46-0.88)], with a significant trend across the three intake categories(P = 0.007). No protective effect of vitamin C was detected after stratification by gender. No effect of vitamin C intake on the gastric cancer incidence was found in either men or women infected with H. pylori. Vitamin C-contributing foods, including cabbage [0.45(0.32-0.63), 0.50(0.34-0.75), 0.45(0.25-0.81)], strawberries [0.56(0.40-0.78), 0.49(0.32-0.74), 0.52(0.29-0.93)], and bananas [0.40(0.29-0.57), 0.41(0.27-0.62), 0.34(0.19-0.63)], were protective factors against the risk of gastric cancer based on the results of the overall adjusted analyses and the results for men and women, ***: A protective effect of vitamin C and vitamin C-contributing foods against gastric cancer was observed. Further studies using larger sample sizes are required to replicate our results.

Safety of endoscopic ultrasound-guided ethanol ablation for pancreatic cystic lesions: A single-center experience of 214 patients

Background:Endoscopic ultrasound-guided ethanol ablation(EUS-EA)for pancreatic cystic lesions(PCLs)has been used in recent years as a feasible treatment modality for low malignant probability PCLs or patients considered high-risk for *** present study aimed to confirm the safety of EUS-EA and to find predictive factors for adverse event(AE).Methods:A retrospective review was performed from the prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent EUS-EA for PCLs from June 2006 to April 2018 at Seoul National University *** primary outcomes of the study were the rates of AEs and severe AEs by *** secondary outcome was the predictive factors of AEs including acute pancreatitis and abdominal ***:A total of 214 patients were evaluated and the diagnoses of PCLs according to cystic fluid analysis and clinical features were as follows:serous cystic neoplasm(32.2%),mucinous cystic neoplasm(26.6%),branch duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(BD-IPMN)(29.4%),and pseudocyst(11.7%).Three patients(1.4%)experienced severe ***,AEs occurred in 71(33.2%)***-IPMN(OR:2.87;95%CI:1.05–7.84;P=0.040),multilocular cysts(OR:3.59;95%CI:1.09–11.85;P=0.036),suspected ethanol leakage during procedure(OR:10.68;95%CI:1.98–57.53;P=0.006),and sticky cystic fluid(OR:3.83;95%CI:1.20–12.24;P=0.024)were predictive factors for post-procedural acute *** of uncinate process(OR:2.99;95%CI:1.22–7.35;P=0.017)and PCLs with exophytic portion(OR:3.70;95%CI:1.96–7.01;P<0.001)were predictive factors for post-procedural abdominal ***:EUS-EA is a safe procedure with a very low rate of severe *** seems possible to predict the AEs according to the features of the procedure and PCLs.

Gossypiboma is a surgical sponge that is retained in the body after the operation. A 39-year-old female presented with vague lower abdominal pain, fever, and rectal discharge 15 mo after hysterectomy. The sponge remaining in the abdomen had no radiopaque marker. Therefore a series of radiographic evaluations was fruitless. The surgical sponge was found in the rectosigmoid colon on colonoscopy. The sponge penetrated the sigmoid colon and rectum transmurally, forming an opening on both sides. The patient underwent low anterior resection and was discharged without postoperative complications.

Comparative study between Embosphere®and Marine gel®as embolic agents for chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND While gelatin sponge particles and calibrated microspheres are commonly used as embolic materials in conventional transarterial chemoembolization(cTACE),direct comparisons between these embolic agents are *** To compare the efficacy and safety of superselective cTACE using Embosphere®or Marine gel®in patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS This retrospective study included 70 patients with small(<4 cm)HCC who underwent cTACE with Embosphere®(n=33)or Marine gel®(n=37)as the embolic agent at a single center between March 2021 and July *** radiologic images and clinical data were retrospectively reviewed,with an emphasis on tumor response,procedure-related complications,and local tumor *** primary index tumor was assessed on a 1-mo follow-up image,and local progression-free survival was obtained using the Kaplan-Meier method and was compared by the log-rank *** The median tumor size of both groups was 1.5 cm,and 69 patients achieved a complete response one month after *** cumulative local recurrence rate at 12 mo was 15.5%in the Embosphere®group and 14.4%in the Marine gel®*** local progression-free survival was not significantly different between the two groups(P=0.83).In the multivariate analysis,high serum alphafetoprotein was the only significant poor prognostic factor for local tumor progression(P=0.01).Postembolization syndrome occurred in 36.4%of the Embosphere®group and 35.1%of the Marine gel®group,and there were no cases of biloma,biliary duct dilation,or liver abscess in either *** Calibrated gelatin sponge particles(Marine gel®)and calibrated microspheres(Embosphere®)have similar outcomes in terms of tumor response for superselective cTACE of small HCC.

Optimal laboratory testing protocol for patients with acne taking oral isotretinoin

BACKGROUND Isotretinoin is a widely prescribed drug for various dermatological conditions,especially *** tests are routinely performed to monitor its side ***,the optimal testing schedule remains *** To evaluate the laboratory monitoring tests and schedules of patients with acne taking isotretinoin to determine the most efficient testing *** We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records from the Dermatology Department of Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital from 2005 to 2020 for patients prescribed isotretinoin for acne who underwent monthly blood *** Aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alanine aminotransferase(ALT),and trigly-ceride(TG)levels significantly changed between 5 and 6 mo when the total prescription period and dose variables were considered *** high-density lipoprotein level also significantly changed between 5 and 6 ***,low-density lipoprotein(LDL)and total cholesterol levels significantly changed between 1 and 2 *** We recommend testing AST,ALT,and TG levels once every 5 to 6 *** also suggest testing LDL and total cholesterol levels during the first and second months.

Solitary acral persistent papular mucinosis nodule:A case report and summary of eight Korean cases

BACKGROUND Acral persistent papular mucinosis(APPM)is a rare idiopathic subtype of localized lichen *** date,there have been 40 APPM cases reported worldwide;however,only 7 cases have been reported in the Korean *** SUMMARY A 70-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a solitary pinkish nodule on the dorsum of his right *** the absence of symptoms,the patient wanted to know the exact diagnosis;thus,a biopsy was *** examination of a biopsy specimen obtained from the nodule on the dorsum of his hand revealed orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis with patchy parakeratosis,prominent hypergranulosis,and diffuse dissecting mucinous deposition between collagen bundles,along with some bland-looking spindle cells throughout the *** nodule was histologically diagnosed as an APPM,and an intralesional triamcinolone injection(2.5 mg/mL)was started every 2 *** three sessions of treatment,the patient showed marked *** To the best of our knowledge,this is the first case of a Korean APPM presenting as a solitary nodule that showed a marked response to triamcinolone intralesional *** it is a rare disease,we report this case to contribute to future research on the pathogenesis and treatment of APPM.

Many types of plastic products,including polystyrene,have long been used in commercial and industrial *** and nanoplastics,plastic particles derived from these plastic products,are emerging as environmental pollutants that can pose health risks to a wide variety of living organisms,including ***,it is not well understood how microplastics and nanoplastics affect cellular functions and induce stress *** can be exposed to polystyrene-microplastics and polystyrene-nanoplastics through ingestion,inhalation,or skin *** ingested plastics are excreted from the body,but inhaled plastics may accumulate in the lungs and can even reach the brain via the nose-to-brain ***-sized polystyrene-nanoplastics can enter cells by endocytosis,accumulate in the cytoplasm,and cause various cellular stresses,such as inflammation with increased pro-inflammatory cytokine production,oxidative stress with generation of reactive oxygen species,and mitochondrial *** induce autophagy activation and autophagosome formation,but autophagic flux may be impaired due to lysosomal *** permanently exposed to polystyrene-nanoplastics,they can be removed from cells by exocytosis and subsequently restore cellular ***,neurons are very susceptible to this type of stress,thus even acute exposure can lead to neurodegeneration without *** review focuses specifically on recent advances in research on polystyrene-nanoplastic-induced cytotoxicity and ***,in this review,based on mechanistic studies of polystyrene-nanoplastics at the cellular level other than neurons,future directions for overcoming the negative effects of polystyrene-nanoplastics on neurons were suggested.

Photoelectrochemical(PEC)H_(2)O_(2)production through water oxidation reaction(WOR)is a promising strategy,however,designing highly efficient and selective photoanode materials remains challenging due to competitive reaction ***,for highly enhanced PEC H_(2)O_(2)production,we present a conformal amorphous titanyl phosphate(a-TP)overlayer on nanoparticulate TiO_(2)surfaces,achieved via lysozyme-molded in-situ surface *** a-TP overlayer modulates surface adsorption energies for reaction intermediates,favoring WOR for H_(2)O_(2)production over the competing O_(2)evolution *** density functional theory calculations reveal that a-TP/TiO_(2)exhibits a substantial energy uphill for the O·*formation pathway,which disfavors O_(2)evolution but promotes H_(2)O_(2)***,the a-TP overlayer strengthens the built-in electric field,resulting in favorable ***,a-TP/TiO_(2)exhibits 3.7-fold higher Faraday efficiency(FE)of 63%at 1.76 V *** hydrogen electrode(RHE)under 1 sun illumination,compared to bare TiO_(2)(17%),representing the highest FE among TiO_(2)-based WOR H_(2)O_(2)production *** the a-TP overlayer constitutes a promising strategy for controlling reaction pathways and achieving efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion.
