Aims This study aimed to develop radial growth models and to predict the potential spatial distribution of Pinus densiflora(Japanese red pine)and Quercus spp.(Oaks)in South Korea,considering topographic and climatic *** We used a dataset of diameter at breast height and radial growth estimates of individual trees,topographic and climatic factors in systematic sample plots distributed over the whole of South *** the basis that radial growth is attributed primarily to tree age,we developed a radial growth model employing tree age as an explanatory *** estimated standard growth(SG),defined as radial growth of the tree at age 30,to eliminate the influence of tree age on radial *** addition,SG estimates including the Topographic Wetness Index,temperature and precipitation were calculated by the Generalized Additive *** Findings As a result of variogram analysis of SG,we found spatial autocorrelation between SG,topographic and climatic *** temperature had negative impacts on radial growth of *** and positive impacts on that of Quercus *** was associated with positive effects on both tree *** on the model,we found that radial growth of *** would be more vulnerable than that of Quercus *** climatic *** simulation with the radial growth model,it was predicted that *** stands would be gradually replaced with Quercus *** in eastern coastal and southern regions of South Korea in the *** models developed in this study will be helpful for understanding the impact of climatic factors on tree growth and for predicting changes in distribution of *** and Quercus *** to climate change in South Korea.

Expression of Genes Affecting Skin Coloration and Sugar Accumulation in Apple Fruits at Ripening Stages in High Temperatures

High temperature is one of the most important environmental factors that affect the successful cultivation of apple (Malus × domestica Borkh). The expression of genes related with anthocyanin synthesis and sugar accumulation by high temperature treatment was investigated in the fruits of “Fuji” apple at different developmental stages in different temperature conditions through real- time PCR. In the initial ripening stages in fruits, there was high expression of genes associated with fruit ripening, flavonoid compound accumulation, and coloration in high temperatures. Expression of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, chalcone synthase, flavone 3-hydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase genes increased gradually in initial ripening stages, while sharply reduced at 24 hr after treatment. In addition, there was no significant difference in the expression of all temperature treatments in late ripening stages. In the further work, investigation of expression levels of various genes could be conducted in the level of transcriptomes from fruits at the early stages to get meaningful information of ripening metabolism in apples in high temperatures.

BACKGROUND Bloodstream infection(BSI)is one of the most significantly adverse events that can occur after liver transplantation(LT)in *** To analyze the profile of BSI according to the postoperative periods and assess the risk factors after pediatric *** Clinical data,collected from medical charts of children(n=378)who underwent primary LT,were retrospectively *** primary outcome considered was BSI in the first year after *** and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for BSI and respective odds ratios(ORs).RESULTS Of the examined patients,106(28%)experienced 162 episodes of pathogen-confirmed BSI during the first year after *** were 1.53±0.95 episodes per children(mean±SD)among BSIcomplicated patients with a median onset of 0.4 mo *** most common pathogenic organisms identified were Coagulase-negative staphylococci,followed by Enterococcus *** Streptococcus *** half(53%)of the BSIs were of unknown *** analysis demonstrated that young age(≤1.3 year;OR=2.1,P=0.011),growth failure(OR=2.1,P=0.045),liver support system(OR=4.2,P=0.008),and hospital stay of>44 d(OR=2.3,P=0.002)were independently associated with BSI in the year after *** BSI was frequently observed in patients after pediatric LT,affecting survival *** profile of BSI may inform clinical treatment and management in high-risk children after LT.

Crystal structures having periodically arranged inclusions inside a homogeneous matrix,called Phononic Crystals （PC’s）,exhibit various wave phenomena such as negative refraction,wave focusing,mode splitting,***,one of the most remarkable properties is a bandgap phenomenon,which refers to wave propagations inside a PC are forbidden in certain *** the bandgap phenomenon is applied in various applications such as wave guiding and wave filtering etc.,there have been growing needs for the PC having wider bandgap frequency ranges.A number of researches [1-4] have successfully designed PC’s having the maximized bandgap frequency *** researches have shown that the design of the unit cell of PC’s can be ***,no earlier investigation has so far paid attentions to the singular issue which will be mainly concerned in this paper - the reduction of the spatial *** found that the optimized unit cell may correspond to shorter spatial periods so that the initial assumption on the periodicity is no longer *** means that the size of the unit cell in the direct lattice originally defined in the topology optimization formulation often turns out to be reduced in the final optimized unit cell especially when the creation and maximization of a bandgap are simultaneously *** unit cell size reduction can occur in various lattice structures including square and rectangular unit *** is found that the reduction of the spatial period can be a critical problem because the reduction can lead to incorrect optimized ***,without any control on the periodicity,maintaining the originally set-up periodicity is not ***,a new technique is required to avoid the reduction of the spatial *** dealing with a technique to control the cell size during optimization iterations,the first part of this work is focused on the explanation of the issue in some details about the characteristic of reduced unit cell

Influenza epidemics frequently and unpredictably break out all over the world,and seriously affect the breeding industry and human *** and live attenuated viruses have been used as protective vaccines but exhibit high risks for *** vaccines enjoy high biosafety and specificity but have a few weak points compared to inactivated virus or live attenuated virus vaccines,especially in low *** this study,we developed a new subunit vaccine platform for a potent,adjuvant-free,and multivalent *** ectodomains of hemagglutinins(HAs)of influenza viruses were expressed in plants as trimers(tHAs)to mimic their native *** in plant extracts were directly used without purification for binding to inactivated Lactococcus(iLact)to produce iLact-tHAs,an antigen-carrying bacteria-like particle(BLP).tHAs BLP showed strong immune responses in mice and chickens without ***,simultaneous injection of two different antigens by two different formulas,t^(HAH5N6+H9N2) BLP or a combination of t^(HAH5N6) BLP and t^(HAH9N2) BLP,led to strong immune responses to both *** on these results,we propose combinations of plant-based antigen production and BLP-based delivery as a highly potent and cost-effective platform for multivalent vaccination for subunit vaccines.

Background Ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA),statins,and ezetimibe(EZE)have demonstrated beneficial effects against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).We investigated the efficacy of the combination of UDCA and the mix of rosuvastatin(RSV)/EZE in the treatment of *** NAFLD mouse models were developed by injecting thioacetamide,fasting,and high-carbohydrate refeeding,highfat diet,and choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined high-fat diet(CDAHFD).Low-dose UDCA(L-UDCA;15 mg/kg)or highdose UDCA(H-UDCA;30 mg/kg)was administered with RSV/*** also employed an in vitro model of NAFLD developed using palmitic acid-treated Hepa1c1c7 *** Co-administration of RSV/EZE with UDCA significantly decreased the collagen accumulation,serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT)levels,and mRNA levels of fibrosis-related markers than those observed in the vehicle group in thioacetamide-treated mice(all Phose observed in the vehicle group(all Phose observed in the vehicle *** the CDAHFD-fed mouse model,UDCA/RSV/EZE significantly attenuated collagen accumulation and fibrosis-related markers compared to those observed in the vehicle group(all P<0.05).In addition,UDCA/RSV/EZE treatment significantly restored cell survival and decreased the protein levels of apoptosis-related markers compared to RSV/EZE treatment in palmitic acid-treated Hepa1c1c7 cells(all P<0.05).Conclusion Combination therapy involving UDCA and RSV/EZE may be a novel strategy for potent inhibition of NAFLD progression.

Retreatment with peginterferon and ribavirin in chronic hepatitis C

The development of boceprevir and telaprevir was a major step forward in the treatment of chronic hepatitis *** addition,the treatment of these infections has been recently revolutionized by the approval of sofosbuvir and ***,there are several challenges associated with the application of noveldrugs,such as new and more frequent adverse events,new drug interactions,and excessively high treatment *** additional concern is viral *** considerations highlight the fact that direct-acting antiviral agents are not a panacea and may not be the best option for all patients who are in need of *** retrospective study revealed that the sustained virologic response was not significantly reduced following peginterferon and ribavirin retreatment compared with the new *** suggest that patients who experience relapse shortly after completing treatment with peginterferon and ribavirin have a reasonable chance of achieving a sustained virologic response when retreated with these drugs alone.

Delayed hippocampal neuronal death in young gerbil following transient global cerebral ischemia is related to higher and longer-term expression of p63 in the ischemic hippocampus

The tumor suppressor p63 is one of p53 family members and plays a vital role as a regulator of neuronal apoptosis in the development of the nervous system. however, the role of p63 in mature neuronal death has not been addressed yet. In this study, we first compared ischemia-induced effects on p63 expression in the hippocampal regions （CA1-3） between the young and adult gerbils subjected to 5 minutes of transient global cerebral ischemia. Neuronal death in the hippocampal CA1 region of young gerbils was significantly slow compared with that in the adult gerbils after transient global cerebral ischemia, p63 immunoreactivity in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in the sham-operated young group was significantly low compared with that in the sham-operated adult group, p63 immunoreactivity was apparently changed in ischemic hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in both ischemia-operated young and adult groups. In the ischemia-operated adult groups, p63 immunoreactivity in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons was significantly decreased at 4 days post-ischemia; however, p63 immunoreactivity in the ischemia-operated young group was significantly higher than that in the ischemia-operated adult group. At 7 days post-ischemia, p63 immunoreactivity was decreased in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in both ischemia-operated young and adult groups. Change patterns of p63 level in the hippocampal CA1 region of adult and young gerbils after ischemic damage were similar to those observed in the immunohistochemical results. These findings indicate that higher and longer-term expression of p63 in the hippocampal CA1 region of the young gerbils after ischemia/reperfusion may be related to more delayed neuronal death compared to that in the adults.
