AIMTo identify and characterize functionally distinct subpopulation of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). METHODSADSCs cultured from mouse subcutaneous adipose tissue were sorted fluorescence-activated cell sorter based on aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, a widely used stem cell marker. Differentiation potentials were analyzed by utilizing immunocytofluorescece and its quantitative analysis. RESULTSApproximately 15% of bulk ADSCs showed high ALDH activity in flow cytometric analysis. Although significant difference was not seen in proliferation capacity, the adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation capacity was higher in ALDHHi subpopulations than in ALDHLo. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed that ribosome-related gene sets were enriched in the ALDHHi subpopulation. CONCLUSIONHigh ALDH activity is a useful marker for identifying functionally different subpopulations in murine ADSCs. Additionally, we suggested the importance of ribosome for differentiation of ADSCs by gene set enrichment analysis.

To retrospectively evaluate the diagnostic performance of free-breathing diffusion-weighted imaging (FB-DWI) with modified imaging parameter settings for detecting hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). METHODSFifty-one patients at risk for HCC were scanned with both FB-DWI and respiratory-triggered DWI with the navigator echo respiratory-triggering technique (RT-DWI). Qualitatively, the sharpness of the liver contour, the image noise and the chemical shift artifacts on each DWI with b-values of 1000 s/mm2 were independently evaluated by three radiologists using 4-point scoring. We compared the image quality scores of each observer between the two DWI methods, using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Quantitatively, we compared the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the liver parenchyma and lesion-to-nonlesion contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) after measuring the signal intensity on each DWI with a b-factor of 1000 s/mm2. The average SNRs and CNRs between the two DWI methods were compared by the paired t-test. The detectability of HCC on each DWI was also analyzed by three radiologists. The detectability provided by the two DWI methods was compared using McNemar’s test. RESULTSFor all observers, the averaged image quality scores of FB-DWI were: Sharpness of the liver contour [observer (Obs)-1, 3.08 ± 0.81; Obs-2, 2.98 ± 0.73; Obs-3, 3.54 ± 0.75], those of the distortion (Obs-1, 2.94 ± 0.50; Obs-2, 2.71 ± 0.70; Obs-3, 3.27 ± 0.53), and the chemical shift artifacts (Obs-1, 3.38 ± 0.60; Obs-2, 3.15 ± 1.07; Obs-3, 3.21 ± 0.85). The averaged image quality scores of RT-DWI were: Sharpness of the liver contour (Obs-1, 2.33 ± 0.65; Obs-2, 2.37 ± 0.74; Obs-3, 2.75 ± 0.81), distortion (Obs-1, 2.81 ± 0.56; Obs-2, 2.25 ± 0.74; Obs-3, 2.96 ± 0.71), and the chemical shift artifacts (Obs-1, 2.92 ± 0.59; Obs-2, 2.21 ± 0.85; Obs-3, 2.77 ± 1.08). Camouflage therapy has been used for permanent contour and pigmentary defects including telangiectasias, vitiligo, lentigines, nevi, atrophic scars and burn scars. The goal of the therapy is to provide new and innovative ways to normalize the appearance of patients with abnormalities. A variety of cosmetic techniques are used to assist these patients in making their irregularities as inconspicuous as possible. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a frustrating problem afflicting many dermatology patients, particularly on the face. Here we report a case of successful cosmetic camouflage using the theory of complementary colors of light in a patient with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation of the face caused by fixed drug eruption. Our case report supports the idea that camouflage for patients with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on the face caused by fixed drug eruption improves their quality of life and also supports the idea that camouflage should be part of the after care for patients who have received patch testing.

An increase in oxidative stress plays a key role in neurotoxicity induction and cell death, which leads to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is a common anthocyanin and shows antioxidant activity in neuronal cells. Silent information regulator 2-related protein 1 (Sirt1) regulates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the effects of C3G on Sirt1 in neuronal cells remain unclear. This study evaluated the effect of C3G on Sirt1 expression and activity in human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells. In the study, C3G increased the expression of Sirt1 and Sirt1 activity in SH-SY5Y cells. Additionally, C3G increased the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, a vital transcription factor for regulating the expression of antioxidant genes, as well as antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. Moreover, C3G protected SH-SY5Y cells from oxidative stress. These results suggest that C3G decreased oxidative stress-induced cell injury by increasing the expression of Sirt1 and other antioxidant factors. Therefore, C3G might merit further investigation for use in attenuating the progress of neurodegenerative diseases.

A few decades ago,liver transplantation in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection was considered a relative contraindication because of the high rate of graft infections and poor prognosis. Since then,remarkable progress was introduced by using nucleos(t)ide analogues and/or hepatitis B immunoglobulin(HBIg) and liver transplantation for HBV-related disease is now becoming one of the good indication. However,high cost burden is the main problem for this combination prophylaxis for a long time use,and this issue should be emerged to be resolved. In this review,we show the progress of post antiHBV strategies showing the history from introduction of HBIg and nucleos(t)ide analogues to recent new strategies with hepatitis B vaccine or saving or stopping protocols of HBIg,and clarify and discuss how to do for further improvement of prevention strategies with better quality.

The 12 May 2008 M 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake,China,was one of largest continental thrusting events *** on interpretations of post-earthquake high-resolution remote sensing images and field surveys,we investigated the geometry,geomorphology,and kinematics of co-seismic surface ruptures,as well as seismic and geologic hazards along the Longmen Shan fold-and-thrust *** results indicate that the Wenchuan earthquake occurred along the NE-SW-trending Yingxiu-Beichuan and Guanxian-Anxian faults in the Longmen Shan fold-and-thrust *** main surface rupture zones along the Yingxiu-Beichuan and Guanxian-Anxian fault zones are approximately 235 and 72 km in length,respectively. These sub-parallel ruptures may merge at *** Yingxiu-Donghekou surface rupture zone can be divided into four segments separated by discontinuities that appear as step-overs or bends in map *** deformation is characterized by oblique reverse faulting with a maximum vertical displacement of approximately 10 m in areas around Beichuan ***-related disasters(e.g., landslides) are linearly distributed along the surface rupture zones and associated river valleys. The Wenchuan earthquake provides new insights into the nature of mountain building within the Longmen Shan,eastern Tibetan *** total crustal shortening accommodated by this great earthquake was as much as 8.5 m,with a maximum vertical uplift of approximately 10 *** present results suggest that ongoing mountain building of the Longmen Shan is driven mainly by crustal shortening and uplift related to repeated large seismic events such as the 2008 Wenchuan ***, rapid erosion within the Longmen Shan fold-and-thrust belt occurs along deep valleys and rupture zones following the occurrence of large-scale landslides triggered by ***,we suggest that crustal shortening related to repeated great seismic events,together with isostatic rebound induced by rapid erosion

＜正＞ Over recent years, structural health monitoring techniques to detect deterioration or damage using sensors attached to concrete structures are attracting wide attention. The authors have developed an electrically conductive film sensor bonded to the concrete surface to detect cracks and measure crack width. A crack monitoring system with this sensor enables low cost, because it does not need special equipment except for an electrical resistance meter. In this study, a lateral loading test on a column is also performed, resulting in that the sensor is applicable to the actual concrete structures subjected to multi-crack conditions.

In order to clarify the reason why the creep rupture time of pre-strained Ni-23Cr-7W Alloy (HR6W) is longer than that of the non-pre-strained HR6W, microstructures of HR6W after a series of creep tests were investigated. The creep tests were conducted at 750°C, 90 and 100 MPa. In the pre-strained samples, the grain boundary shielding ratio by precipitates was larger than that of the non-pre-strained sample. In addition, in the pre-strained samples the size of the M23C6 carbide in the grains was finer than in the non-pre-strained sample. The W content in the M23C6 carbide in the pre-strained samples tended to be larger than in the non-pre-strained sample. Therefore, the Ostwald ripening of the carbide was delayed and the size of M23C6 carbide was thought to be fine for a long time. These observations show that creep strength in the pre-strained samples is higher than that of the non-pre-strained sample because of both precipitation strengthening inside of the grains and grain boundaries.

Colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD) is considered one of the most challenging endoscopic procedures for novice endoscopists. When compared with the stomach, the colon and rectum have a narrower tubular lumen, greater angulation at the flexures, and a thinner muscle layer. These factors make endoscopic control and maneuverability difficult. ESD of the colorectum was considered more difficult than gastric and esophageal ESD. However, with learning from the experts, practicing, and selecting an appropriate technique,most of colorectal ESD could be performed successfully. Nevertheless, some colorectal locations are extremely specialized either from unique anatomy or given unstable scope position. Accordingly, the objective of this review was to provide endoscopists with an overview of the techniques and outcomes associated with ESD at these special colorectal locations. ESD at the discussed special locations of the ileo-colo-rectum was found to be feasible, and outcomes were comparable to those of ESD performed in non-special locations of the ileocolo-rectum. Practice for skill improvement and awareness of the unique characteristics of each special location is the key to performing successful ESD.
