We report a photoelectron spectroscopic study of the valence bands of double hexagonal-close-packed (dhcp) α-La(0001) films epitaxially grown on W(110) at room temperature. The La 5d photoemission cross section in the photon energy region from 20 eV to 130 eV was obtained and the valence-band structure of α-La was determined. Except for 4f-related structures, the valence-band structures of dhcp α-La and dhcp β-Ce were found to resemble each other. From the band structure, the crystal structure of the La film was confirmed. No evidence for the existence of a 5d-like surface state near the Fermi energy at the point of the surface Brillouin zone was obtained and a 6s band bottom was identified.

The assessment of activated concrete is particularly difficult during the decommissioning of an accelerator *** analysis by core boring is the only method of investigating the activity of concrete *** address this problem,an in-situ and nondestructive analysis method was developed to determineγ-ray-emitting nuclides and their specific activities in the concrete walls and floor by using a portable germanium semiconductor *** this work,we examined a substitute for Ge detector to establish a simpler and more convenient *** candidates,we focused on some scintillation type spectrometers,and the possibility of a substitute for a Ge detector was examined by both simulation and *** detection limits were roughly estimated through Monte Carlo simulation for various scintillation crystals,and it was found that 1.5-inch LaBr3,CeBr3,and SrI2 could distinguish the clearance *** was confirmed that the 1.5-inch LaBr3 could reproduce the calibration curve of the Ge detector in the *** required thickness and length of the radiation shield for suppressing the background radiation during the measurement was also determined for the convenience of an actual decommissioning work.

Classification of Emphysema Subtypes: Comparative Assessment of Local Binary Patterns and Related Texture Features

There are two different ways of reducing production cost. One is the efficiency improvement of existing plant with minor modifications, when necessary, based on thorough diagnosis of existing operation. Another way is modernization of the plant by replacing of operating equipment to a equipment with much higher efficiency. The former way is sometimes more economical under certain limited conditions even though the attainable effectiveness may be less than the latter way. In this article, results of application of advanced technology developed by Onoda Cement Co., are described. Coal firing, especially low grade coal firing Is a matter of great interest to cement producer. Onoda Cement had conducted operation to clarify the effect in changing heat value of coal for four levels from 6,700 kcal/kg coal to 4,500 kcal/kg coal by using a 1,700 t/d RSP kiln in Onoda Works. It was confirmed that operation was very smooth and satisfactorily high quality clinker was produced in each level abovementioned under similar production and heat consumption. The use of low volatile matter coal as well as the use of waste fuel have contributed to cost reduction. Cement producers in many countries are now focussing their interest towards the roller mill for finish grinding as a powerful tool for power savings. Further to the development of high efficiency air separator O-SEPA, Onoda Cement has developed a roller mill named OK roller mill for finish grinding. It consumes about 20?0% less power for normal portland cement grinding than modern ball mill system in addition to about 30% lower maintenance cost. As the results of her energy saving efforts, Onoda has achieved about 20% reduction of energy per ton of cement during the past five years.

The purpose of this study was to assess usefulness of local binary patterns (LBP) and related texture features, namely completed local binary patterns (CLBP) and local ternary patterns (LTP), for the classification of emphysema subtypes on low-dose CT images. Fifty patients (34 men and 16 women;age, 67.5 ± 10.1 years) who underwent low-dose CT (60 mAs) were included. They were comprised of 17 never smokers, 13 smokers without COPD, and 20 smokers with COPD. By consensus reading of low-dose CT images from these patients, two radiologists selected 3681 nonoverlapping regions of interest (ROIs) and annotated them as one of the following three classes: normal tissue, centrilobular emphysema, and paraseptal emphysema. From these ROIs, histogram of CT densities, LBP, CLBP, and LTP were calculated, and the 3 types of texture histograms were concatenated with the CT density histogram. These 3 types of histograms (referred to as combined LBP, combined CLBP, and combined LTP) were used to classify ROI using linear support vector machine. For each type of the combined histogram, the accuracy of classification was determined by patient-based 10-fold cross validation. The best accuracy of combined LBP, combined CLBP, and combined LTP were 81.36%, 82.99%, and 83.29%, respectively. Compared to the classification accuracies obtained with combined LBP, those with combined LTP or combined CLBP were consistently improved. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that, on low-dose CT, LTP and CLBP were more useful for the classification of emphysema subtypes than LBP.

Polishing Techniques of Stainless Steel Molding Die for the Slumping Method of Glass Optical Components

In recent years, high precision geometric shape, surface roughness, and cost reduction are required for large glass component molding processes. In this research, the polishing process of stainless steel molding dies used to form thin glass components is investigated. The surface roughness of the polished stainless steel molding die surface is below Rz = 200 nm （P-V） at 15 h polishing with 0.5 % alumina polishing liquid. In the case of polishing process with only the weight of molding die and a polishing pressure of 0.5 kPa, polishing times are approximately 60 h and 20 h, respectively. Final surface roughness polished stainless steel molding die surface with pressure of 0.5 kPa is Rz = 7 nm （P-V）, rms -- 1.6 nm and Ra = 1.4 nm. In a thin glass component manufacturing method, ＂slumping method＂, surface roughness before glass forming is rms = 0.7 nm and Ra = 0.6 nm, and after is rms = 0.7 nm and Ra = 0.6 nm. Therefore, there were no observable changes their surface roughness.

Basic studies on life circumstances and stress in persons with congenital physical disabilities using always wheelchairs

Many studies about the health problems of persons with physical disabilities have been performed, however few studies have focused on the life circumstances of persons with physical disabilities. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between stress and the life circumstances of persons with congenital physical disabilities who must use wheelchairs. The participants were 70 individuals who used the services of care workers employed by welfare service business offices. Participants used wheelchairs. In addition, those participants who used a standard manual wheelchair were not able to operate it alone. Participants were required to answer a two-part questionnaire with questions about factors related to basic lifestyle and stress, and about life factors related to the stress of individuals with physical disabilities. No significant relationship between lifestyle and stress was found in either males or females. Most persons with congenital physical disabilities using wheelchairs had some kind of stress in daily life. In particular, significantly more level of stress was found in females (90%) than that in males (65%). Levels of stress according to life factor differed between males and females. The most dramatic gender difference was that the level of stress caused by the mental or mind factor in females was significantly higher than that in males (p < 0.05). Most persons who must use wheelchairs have stress resulting from daily life, and in particular, females experience more mental stress than males.

Redox Responsive Transcription Factor1 （RRTF1） in Arabidopsis is rapidly and transiently upregulated by H202, as well as biotic- and abiotic-induced redox signals. RRTF1 is highly conserved in angio- sperms, but its physiological role remains elusive. Here we show that inactivation of RRTF1 restricts and overexpression promotes reactive oxygen species （ROS） accumulation in response to stress. Transgenic lines overexpressing RRTF1 are impaired in root and shoot development, light sensitive, and susceptible to Alternaria brassicae infection. These symptoms are diminished by the beneficial root endophyte Piriformospora indica, which reduces ROS accumulation locally in roots and systemi- cally in shoots, and by antioxidants and ROS inhibitors that scavenge ROS. More than 800 genes were detected in mature leaves and seedlings of transgenic lines overexpressing RRTF1; ∽40% of them have stress-, redox-, ROS-regulated-, ROS-scavenging-, defense-, cell death- and related functions. Bioinformatic analyses and in vitro DNA binding assays demonstrate that RRTF1 binds to GCC-box-like sequences in the promoter of RRTFl-responsive genes. Upregulation of RRTF1 by stress stimuli and H202 requires WRKY18/40/60. RRTF1 is co-regulated with the phylogenet- ically related RAP2.6, which contains a GCC-box-like sequence in its promoter, but transgenic lines overexpressing RAP2.6 do not accumulate higher ROS levels. RRTF1 also stimulates systemic ROS accumulation in distal non-stressed leaves. We conclude that the elevated levels of the highly conserved RRTF1 induce ROS accumulation in response to ROS and ROS-producing abiotic and biotic stress signals.

Zhenxuanyin (镇眩饮) is composed of pure Chinese medicinal herbs, such as gastrodia tuber, poria cocos, ligusticum wallichii etc. 4-verssel occlusion (4VO) model rats were reperfused after 30 minutes’ complete occlusion, and Zhenxuanyin was administered 3 times a day. 24 hours later, 123I-IMP uptake in the brain was evaluated as an index of cerebral blood flow (CBF). The results show that Zhenxuanyin (0.03g kg, 0.3g kg, Ig kg, or 3g/ kg a day) can greatly improve the blood flow in the main cerebral regions, and 0.3g/ kg can increase cerebral blood flow (CBF) to the normal level.

One-step palliative treatment method for obstructive jaundice caused by unresectable malignancies by percutaneous transhepatic insertion of an expandable metallic stent

AIM： To describe a simple one-step method involving percutaneous transhepatic insertion of an expandable metal stent （EMS） used in the treatment of obstructive jaundice caused by unresectable malignancies. METHODS： Fourteen patients diagnosed with obstructive jaundice due to unresectable malignancies were included in the study. The malignancies in these patients were a result of very advanced carcinoma or old age. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography was performed under ultrasonographic guidance. After a catheter with an inner metallic guide was advanced into the duodenum, an EMS was placed in the common bile duct, between a point 1 cm beyond the papilla of Vater and the entrance to the hepatic hilum. In cases where it was difficult to span the distance using just a single EMS, an additional stent was positioned. A drainage catheter was left in place to act as a hemostat. The catheter was removed after resolution of cholestasis and stent patency was confirmed 2 or 3 d post-procedure. RESULTS： One-step insertion of the EMS was achieved in all patients with a procedure mean time of 24.4 min. Out of the patients who required 2 EMS, 4 needed a procedure time exceeding 30 min. The mean time for removal of the catheter post-procedure was 2.3 d. All patients died of malignancy with a mean follow-up time of 7.8 mo. No stent-related complication or stent obstruction was encountered. CONCLUSIONS： One-step percutaneous transhepaticinsertion of EMS is a simple procedure for resolving biliary obstruction and can effectively improve the patient＇s quality of life.
