Hong Kong has a high concentration of developments on hilly terrain in close proximity to man-made slopes and natural *** of the high seasonal rainfall,these man-made slopes and natural hillsides would pose a risk to the public as manifested by a death toll of 470 people due to landslides since the late *** 1977,the Government of the Hong Kong sAR embarked on a systematic programme,known as the Landslip Preventive Measure(LPM)Programme,to retroft substandard man-made *** 1977 to 2010,about 4500 substandard government man-made slopes have been upgraded through engineering *** the period,the Programme had evolved progressively in response to Government’s internal demand for continuous improvement and rising public expectation for slope *** 2010,the Government implemented the Landslip Prevention and Mitigation(LPMit)Programme to dovetail with the LPM Programme,with the focus on retroftting the remaining moderate-risk substandard man-made slopes and mitigating systematically the natural terrain landslide risk pursuant to the"react-to-known"hazard *** paper presents the evolution of the LPM and LPMit Programmes as well as the insight on landslide prevention and mitigation through engineering works.

sericite is mica-based natural clay that is annealed at 800 ℃ for 4 h, followed by acid activation using 3.0 mol L-1HCl at 100℃. The interaction of cesium(I), Cs(I), with sericite could provide useful data for the study of soil erosion or mass water movement utilizing the natural radioactive Cs. In this study.s.ricite and activated sericite were used to assess their suitability in the attenuation of Cs from the aquatic environment under both batch and column experiments. The surface morphological studies indicated that a disordered and heterogeneous surface structure was exhibited by the activated sericite, whereas the native sericite exhibited a compact and layered structure. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) specific surface area results indicated a significant increase in the surface area due to the activation of sericite. The batch reactor data collected for various parametric studies revealed that an increase in p H(from 2.0 to 8.0) and sorbate concentration(from 10.0 to 100.0 mg L-1) apparently favored the attenuation of Cs(I). The timedependent sorption data revealed that Cs(I) uptake was very rapid, and it achieved its saturation value within just 50 min of *** kinetic modeling studies indicated that the uptake of Cs(I) followed a pseudo-second-order rate equation; hence, the attenuation capacity of these solids for Cs(I) was estimated to be 0.858 and 4.353 mg g-1for sericite and activated sericite solids, *** adsorption isotherm modeling data showed a reasonably good applicability of the Freundlich model than the Langmuir *** effect of background electrolyte concentrations(0.001 to 0.1 mol L-1) of Mg(NO3)2indicated that the presence of this electrolyte could not significantly affect the percent removal of Cs(I) by activated sericite. Furthermore, the fixed-bed column reactor operations were performed to obtain the breakthrough data, which were fitted well to the Thomas non-linear equation. Despite the increasing number of recent reports on laparoscopic liver resection in adults, there are only rare reports on such a procedure being performed in children. The authors report here on a total laparoscopic left lateral sectionectomy that was performed in a 5-year-old girl who had a cystic tumor of the liver. The operative time was 150 minutes, the estimated blood loss was about 100 mL, and no intraoperative transfusion was required. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 11 without any.s.gnificant complications. The postoperative pathology of the specimen confirmed it to be a mesenchymal hamartoma of the liver with a disease-free resection margin. This case demonstrates that laparoscopic liver resection can be a safe and feasible operative procedure for the pediatric patient with liver disease.

We consider strongly nonlinear long waves on the surface of a homogeneous fluid *** modifying the formulation for the high-order spectral(HOs)method for waves in water of finite depth,we present a higher-order nonlinear system for the surface elevation and the velocity potential on the free surface to describe the two-dimensional evolution of large amplitude long *** is shown that the resulting system preserves the Hamiltonian structure of the Euler equations and can be transformed to the strongly nonlinear long-wave model for the depth-averaged *** to truncation of the linear dispersion relation for water waves,both the system for the surface velocity potential and that for the depth-averaged velocity are ill-posed when the order of approximation is odd and even,*** avoid this ill-posedness,fully dispersive models are also *** the same order approximation,the long-wave model is found more effective for numeral studies of large amplitude long waves than the finite-depth model.

A chemo-mechanical model is developed to investigate the effects on the stress development of the coating of polycrystalline Ni-rich LiNixMnyCo_(z)O_(2)(x≥0.8)(NMC)particles with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT).The simulation results show that the coating of primary NMC particles significantly reduces the stress generation by efficiently accommodating the volume change associated with the lithium diffusion,and the coating layer plays roles both as a cushion against the volume change and a channel for the lithium transport,promoting the lithium distribution across the secondary particles more ***,the lower stiffness,higher ionic conductivity,and larger thickness of the coating layer improve the stress *** paper provides a mathematical framework for calculating the chemo-mechanical responses of anisotropic electrode materials and fundamental insights into how the coating of NMC active particles mitigates stress levels.

The ongoing contamination of groundwater with per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAs)has resulted in a global and rapidly growing interest in PFAs groundwater *** technologies that lead to PFAs destruction are often limited by not addressing all PFAs,being energy-intensive or not being suited for in-situ *** developed nNiFeactivated carbon(AC)nanocomposites and demonstrated varying degrees of PFAs reduction and fluoride generation with these nanocomposites in batch reactors for several *** we explore nNiFe-AC’s effectiveness to transform perfluoroalkyl acid acids(PFAAs)under steady.s.ate flow(0.0044 to 0.15 mL/min)in nNiFe-AC:sand packed *** experiments included,two perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOs)in deionized water and two PFAA mixtures in deionized water or bicarbonate buffer containing five perfluoroalkyl carboxylates(PFCAs,C5-C9)and three perfluoroalkyl sulfonates(PFsAs,C4,C6 and C8)at temperatures of 50 or 60℃ were *** transformation was similar in PFOs-only and PFAA mixture column ***,%PFAA transformation under flow conditions exceeded what we observed previously in batch reactors with up to 53%transformation of a PFAA mixture with∼8%*** chain PFAs dominated the PFAAs transformed and a bicarbonate matrix appeared to reduce overall *** breakthrough was slower than predicted from only.s.rption due to transformation;some longer chain PFAs like PFOs did not ***,nNiFe-AC technology with both in-situ and ex-situ potential application was shown to be a plausible part of a treatment train needed to address the ongoing challenge for cleaning up PFAs-contaminated waters.

As there is substantial progress in the KsTAR tokamak engineering, all themajor structures and sub-systems are under fabrication and in procurement phase. The vacuum vessel,port, cry.s.at cylinder, lid, and bellows are being rigorously fabricated in the factory. The lowerpart of the KsTAR such as cry.s.at base and gravity.s.pport has been almost finished in itsfabrication. There are also great progresses and significant results in manufacturing of thesuperconducting magnet, including four Toroidal Field (TF) coils, lower and upper PF7 coils whichare the largest Poloidal Field (PF) coils. The TFOO coil, which has been made for test and back-upof the TF magnet system, was successfully tested in the cool-down and current charging. As thefabrications and procurements of major structures have been actively proceeded, assembly works werealso launched from Aug. 2003. More detailed description on these status, results, and plans will bedescribed in this paper.
