Sepsis is responsible for approximately 5.3 million deaths globally each ***,we constructed hierarchical chitin microspheres loaded with MOF-919(Ch/metal–organic frameworks[MOFs])for the rapid and efficient removal of lipopolysaccharide(LPS)in complex blood ***,abun-dant active sites on MOF-919(Sc)also enable a record-high adsorption capacity of 9.56 mg/g in biomass-based adsorbents due to the coordination interactions between endotoxin and MOF-919(Sc).The LPS level of sepsis rabbits was less than 2 EU/mL(clearance rate>95%)after 90-min hemoperfusion,showing no adverse effect on the rabbit ***,compared to the commonly used LPS scrubber Toraymyxin(polymethyl methacrylate),the chitin adsorbent is significantly more cost-effective and environmentally *** prepara-tion strategy for hierarchical porous microspheres offers notable advantages in designability,recyclability,and renewability,providing a new approach to sepsis treatment and promising prospects for the biomedical application of sustainable biomass materials.

Aging increases the risk ofliver diseases and systemic susceptibility to aging-related ***,cell type-specific changes and the underlying mechanism of liver aging in higher vertebrates remain incompletely ***,we constructed the first single-nucleus transcriptomic landscape of primate liver aging,in which we resolved cell type-specific gene expression fluctuation in hepatocytes across three liver zonations and detected aberrant cell-cell interactions between hepatocytes and niche *** in-depth dissection of this rich dataset,we identifed impaired lipid metabolism and upregulation of chronic inflammation-related genes prominently associated with declined liver functions during *** particular,hyperactivated sterol regulatory element-binding protein(SREBP)signaling was a hallmark of the aged liver,and consequently,forced activation of SREBP2 in human primary hepatocytes recapitulated in vivo aging phenotypes,manifesting as impaired detoxification and accelerated cellular *** study expands our knowledge of primate liver aging and informs the development of diagnostics and therapeutic interventions for liver aging and associated diseases.

Sepsis involves the early activation of both pro-and antiinflammatory responses,but is also accompanied by major changes in nonimmunologic pathways.[1]Autophagy is the lysosome-dependent process of removing damaged proteins and organelles.[2]Accumulating evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies reveals that autophagy may have a protective effect on sepsis,and the late-stage suppression of autophagy is associated with a poor outcome.[3]Thus,reversal of late-stage autophagy may be a good therapeutic strategy for ***,the identification of biomarker,which could inform the clinical diagnosis of autophagic impairment,will be essential for guiding the management of septic patients.

Dear Editor,Pre-harvest sprouting(PHS)is a major challenge to cereal crop production in areas with frequent rainfall at harvest time and has significant effects on grain yield and end-use quality(Lang et al.,2021).PHS is quantified by the dormancy/germination ratio of seeds and is largely regulated by two opposing phytohormones,abscisic acid(ABA)and gibberellin(GA)(Tai et al.,2021).ABA induces dormancy and suppresses PHS,whereas GA exerts the opposite effects(Finkelstein et al.,2008).Because of the complexity of the genome,only a few genes involved in regulation of PHS have been identified in wheat,and the underlying molecular regulatory mechanisms of PHS remain largely unknown in this species.

AIM: To investigate the behaviors of smartphone usage and parental knowledge of vision health among primary students in the rural areas of China. METHODS: In this school-based, cross-sectional study, a total of 52 606 parents of students from 30 primary schools in the Xingguo County were investigated through an online questionnaire from July 2020 to August 2020. The self-designed questionnaire contained three parts: the demographic factors of both children and parents, parental knowledge and attitude toward myopia, and the preventive treatment of ***: A total of 52 485 appropriately answered questionnaires were received, showing an effective response rate of 95.1%. The average age of the primary students was 10.1±0.98 y and the prevalence of myopia among the primary students was 40.3%. The age of myopia occurrence in elementary students was significantly correlated with the parents’ educational level(95%CI: 0.82-0.98, P=0.013), children’s gender(95%CI: 1.08-1.20, Py or countryside)(95%CI: 0.59-0.66, Py(95%CI: 0.78-0.88, Py town, high family income, and high parents’educational level significantly affected both parents’ myopia awareness and children’s vision-threatening behaviors(Pyopia development among rural primary school students and their parents. This survey will serve as a guidance for designing myopic prevention policies in the rural areas of China.

Vascular calcification(VC)is a common characteristic of aging,diabetes,chronic renal failure,and *** basic component of VC is hydroxyapatite(HAp).Nano-sized HAp(nHAp)has been identified to play an essential role in the development of pathological calcification of ***,whether nHAp can induce calcification in vivo and the mechanism of nHAp in the progression of VC remains *** discovered that nHAp existed both in vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMCs)and their extracellular matrix(ECM)in the calcified arteries from *** nHAp had similar morphological and chemical properties as natural nHAp recovered from calcified *** stimulated osteogenic differentiation and accelerated mineralization of VSMCs in *** nHAp could also directly induce VC in ***,nHAp was internalized into lysosome,which impaired lysosome vacuolar H+-ATPase for its acidification,therefore blocked autophagic flux in *** re-acidification by cyclic-3′,5′-adenosine monophosphate(cAMP)significantly enhanced autophagic degradation and attenuated nHAp-induced *** accumulated autophagosomes and autolysosomes were converted into calcium-containing exosomes which were secreted into ECM and accelerated vascular calcium *** of exosome release in VSMCs decreased calcium ***,our results demonstrated a repressive effect of nHAp on lysosomal acidification,which inhibited autophagic degradation and promoted a conversion of the accumulated autophagic vacuoles into exosomes that were loaded with undissolved nHAp,Ca^(2+),Pi and *** exosomes bud off the plasma membrane,deposit within ECM,and form calcium *** calcification was thus accelerated by nHAP through blockage of autophagic flux in VSMCs.

Assessing the effectiveness of PM2.5 pollution control from the perspective of interprovincial transport and PM2.5 mitigation costs across China

Due to the transboundary nature of air pollutants,a province's efforts to improve air quality can reduce PM2.5 concentration in the surrounding *** inter-provincial PM2.5 pollution transport could bring great challenges to related environmental management work,such as financial fund allocation and subsidy policy ***,we examined the transport characteristics of PM2.5 pollution across provinces in 2013 and 2020 via chemical transport modeling and then monetized inter-provincial contributions of PM2.5 improvement based on pollutant emission control *** found that approximately 60%of the PM2.5 pollution was from local sources,while the remaining 40%originated from outside ***,about 1011 billion RMB of provincial air pollutant abatement costs contributed to the PM2.5 concentration decline in other provinces during 2013-2020,accounting for 41.2%of the total abatement *** with lower unit improvement costs for PM2.5,such as Jiangsu,Hebei,and Shandong,were major contributors,while Guangdong,Guangxi,and Fujian,bearing higher unit costs,were among the main *** study identifies provinces that contribute to air quality improvement in other provinces,have high economic efficiency,and provide a quantitative framework for determining inter-provincial *** study also reveals the uneven distribution of pollution abatement costs(PM2.5 improvement/abatement costs)due to transboundary PM2.5 transport,calling for adopting inter-provincial economic compensation *** mechanisms ensure equitable cost-sharing and effective regional air quality management.

Most image retargeting algorithms rely heavily on valid saliency map detection to proceed. However, the inefficiency of high quality saliency map detection severely restricts the application of these image retargeting methods. In this paper, we propose a random algorithm for efficient context-aware saliency map detection. Our method is a multiple level saliency map detection algorithm that integrates multiple level coarse saliency maps into the resulting saliency map and selectively updates unreliable regions of the saliency map to refine detection results. Because of the randomized search, our method requires very little additional memory beyond that for the input image and result map, and does not need to build auxiliary data structures to accelerate the saliency map detection. We have implemented our algorithm on a GPU and demonstrated the performance for a variety of images and video sequences, compared with state-of-the-art image processing.
