Modified accumulation of selected heavy metals in Bt transgenic rice

Safety assessment of genetically modified crops generally does not take into account the potential hazard of altered patterns of heavy metal accumulation in plants. A pot experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions to evaluate the impact of heavy metal amendments on the accumulation of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in a Bt transgenic rice Ke-Ming-Dao （KMD） and its wild-type Xiushui 11 （Xs11）. In control soils, significant difference was only found in contents of Cu （p 〈 0.01） and Pb （p 〈 0.05） in straw between KMD and Xs11. At three levels of Cd amendments （5, 10, and 20 mg/kg）, the Cd contents in grain and straw of KMD were significantly higher than those of Xs11, and all grain Cd contents were significantly higher than the International Criteria （0.2-0.4 mg/kg） as specified by the Codex Alimentarius Commission （CAC）. These results implied that it may be unsafe for growing Bt transgenic rice in heavily Cd-polluted areas. No significant difference in Zn was found between the two varieties with the exception of roots at Zn amendment level of 600 mg/kg, while Pb contents in KMD were much higher in the straw at the lead amendment level of 1000 mg/kg and in the root at 250 mg Pb/kg. Data on the heavy metal accumulation patterns for the genetically modified rice may be used for the selection of growing areas as well as for plant residue management for Bt rice.

The high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) 7+8 were introduced into the Long 97–586 (1,7,2+12) wheat variety (Triticum aestivum) by 5 consecutive backcrosses with biochemical marker–assisted *** isogenic lines (NILs) of HMW-GS 7 and 7+8 were obtained,and the NILs were planted in the experimental field at the Crop Breeding institute of Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural science in 2004–*** field experiments were designed using the two-column contrast arrangement method with six replicates in 2004–2005 and four replicates in *** result of three years experiments showed that the differences between NILs of Long 97–586 with subunit 7 and those with subunits 7+8 in the quality parameters of flour protein content and dry gluten content were negligible (P>0.1).However,the differences in some of the quality parameters were remarkably significant (P<0.01),including wet gluten content,ratio of wet gluten/dry gluten,gluten index,Zeleny sedimentation,ratio of sedimentation/dry gluten,and the farinogram parameters of water absorption,development time,stability,breakdown time and degree of *** difference between NILs with subunits 7+8 and subunit 7 was significant (P<0.05) on the alveogram W value and had a critical value (P=0.05) on the alveogram P value in *** results show that HMW-GS 7+8 is far superior to HMW-GS 7 in terms of baking *** possibilities of using subunits 7+8 and subunit 7 in breeding strong and weak gluten wheat varieties are discussed in this paper.

Nonlinear properties of fractal growth of thin films at low temperature

Fractal growth of thin films at low temperature (75-200 K) is simulated by kinetic Monte Carlo method, using realistic growth model-Ag on Pt(111) surface and physical parameters. It is shown that the fractal growth of thin films is nonlinear, i. e., the island size S(t) grows with time t as tk ) where the growth exponent k is slightly less than 1 because of the growth competition of islands and the competition between nucleation and growth of islands. The further results indicate that the branch width of islands b increases with increasing island size S as b -Sa, where a is approximately equal to 1/3 because of the geometrical structure of the triangular substrate.

The stabilization problem for a class of nonlinear networked control systems (NCSs) is investigated in this paper. A Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is employed to represent the nonlinear controlled plant in the NCSs. Based on parallel distributed compensation (PDC) technique, a novel model of the nonlinear NCSs is established firstly in consideration of both network-induced delay and packet losses in transmission. Then a stability condition of the nonlinear NCSs is presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) by using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method and the delay input approach. Furthermore, the control design of the nonlinear NCSs is developed by means of LMIs. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The reaction of 3,6-di-(3-methyl-pyridin-2-yI)-s-tetrazine (DMPTZ, II) with CeIII salt [Ce(NO3)3 · 6H2O] generates a new ligand, N-(3-methyl-pyridin-2-yl)-formimidoyl-(3-methyl-pyridin-2-yl) hydrazone (L), and forms a new complex: a mononuclear complex [Ce(L)(NO3)2 (H2O)3] · NO3 (III). Crystal data for III: space group P-1, with a = 0.7133(4) nm, b = 1.1139(2) nm, c = 1.4572(3) nm, α= 102.13(2)°, β= 99.81(3)°, γ= 91.10(3)°, Z = 2, V = 1113.6(7) nm3, μ = 2.123 mm?1 and F(000) = 630. L acts as a tri-dentate chelating ligand in III. There are 10 coordination sites around Ce3+ of III, which are respectively occupied by seven oxygen atoms (four from two nitrate anions and three from three H2O molecules) and three nitrogen atoms (all from L). The cerium atom and three chelating nitrogen atoms are coplanar. The mechanism of the metal assisted decomposition is discussed briefly.

Responses of ground-dwelling spiders to four hedgerow species on sloped agricultural fields in Southwest China

Spiders are important predators in agroecosystems and contribute to the control of agricultural pest populations. Habitat manage- ment such as the creation of new semi-natural habitats around or within fields enhances spider abundance and species diversity. Using pitfall traps, we investigated the effects of four hedgerow plant species, which serve as undisturbed and permanent semi-natural habitats, on ground-dwelling spider activity density (a parameter of population density and relative activity) and species richness. Samples were collected over two winter wheat and two summer maize growing seasons during 2005-2007 in trial field 1 (slope gradient of 20%) and field 2 (slope gradient of 12%) at the Ziyang Experimental Site in Sichuan province, China. The hedgerow species evaluated were Amorpha fruticosa (field 1), Vetiveria zizanioides (field 1), Eulaliopsis binata (field 2), and Medicago sativa (field 2). Compared to control plots, hedgerow plots had significantly higher activity density and species richness of ground-dwelling spiders within strips in both fields 1 and 2 during the wheat growing season. The presence of hedgerow strips did not augment the activity density and species richness of ground-dwelling spiders within the crop fields during the wheat or maize growing seasons. The ground-dwelling spider activity density within hedgerow strips was significantly higher in the Vetiveria than in the Amorpha plots and in the Medicago than in the Eulaliopsis plots, and the species richness was significantly higher in the Vetiveria than in the Amorpha plots during the wheat season. Our results suggest that hedgerows may serve as important overwintering sites for ground-dwelling spiders during the wheat growing season. In addition, the diversification of agroecosystems by using hedgerow strips may be a viable strategy for maintaining ground-dwelling spider populations in agricultural areas. Method for Evaluating the Degrees of Land Use Sustainability of Mountainous County and its Application in Yunnan province,China

The evaluation of sustainable land use is the key issue in the field of studying the sustainable land utilization. In general analysis, the sustainable land use is evaluated respectively from its ecological sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability in China and other countries in recent years. Although this evaluation is an important work, it seems insufficient and hard to comprehensively reflect the whole degree of land use sustainability. Thus, to make up this deficiency, this paper brings forward the evaluation indexes, which make it possible to quantitatively reflect the whole degree of land use sustainability, namely, the concept of ＂degrees of overall land use sustainability＂（Dos）, and research and measurement development of the method of and calculation in Dos. Taking the evaluation of the degree of land use sustainability in county regions of Yunnan province as the actual example for analysis, results are basically as follows： 1） The degree of land use sustainability （Dos） is the ration index to organically and systematically integrate the degree of ecological friendliness （DeF）, the degree of economic viability （Dev） and the degree of social acceptability （Dsa）, able to comprehensively reflect the whole sustainability degree of regional land use 2） Based on the value of Dos, the grading system and standard for the sustainability of land use may be established and totally divided into five grades, namely, the high-degree sustainability, middle-degree sustainability, low-degree sustainability, conditional sustainability and non-sustainability. Meanwhile, the standard for distinguishing sustainability grades has also been confirmed so as to determine the nature of sustainability degrees in different grades. This makes the possibility for the combination of nature determination with ration in research result and provides with the scientific guideline and decision-making gist for better implementation of sustainable land use strategy

Partial DNA sequences of cytochrome b gene (mtDNA) were successfully retrieved from Late Pleistocene fossil bone of Mammuthus primigenius collected from the Xiguitu County ( Yakeshi), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and from Zhaodong, Harbin of Heilongjiang province in northern China. Two ancient DNA fragments (109 bp and 124 bp) were authenticated by reproducible experiments in two different laboratories and by phylogenetic analysis with other Elephantidae taxa. Phylogenetic analysis using these sequences and published data in either separate or combined datasets indicate unstable relationship among the woolly mammoth and the two living elephants, Elephas and Loxodonta . In addition to the short sequences used to attempt the long independent evolution of Elephantidae terminal taxa, we suggest that a high intra-specific diversity existed in Mammuthus primigenius crossing both spatial and temporal ranges, resulting in a complex and divergent genetic background for DNA sequences so far recovered. The high genetic diversity in the extinct woolly mammoth can explain the apparent instability of Elephantidae taxa on the molecular phylogenetic trees and can reconcile the apparent paradox regarding the unresolved Elephantidae trichotomy.

Non-Gaussian quantum states generation and robust quantum non-Gaussianity via squeezing field

Recent studies show that quantum non-Gaussian states or using non-Gaussian operations can improve entanglement distillation, quantum swapping, teleportation, and cloning. In this work, employing a strategy of non-Gaussian operations（namely subtracting and adding a single photon）, we propose a scheme to generate non-Gaussian quantum states named single-photon-added and-subtracted coherent（SPASC） superposition states by implementing Bell measurements, and then investigate the corresponding nonclassical features. By squeezed the input field, we demonstrate that robustness of nonGaussianity can be improved. Controllable phase space distribution offers the possibility to approximately generate a displaced coherent superposition states（DCSS）. The fidelity can reach up to F ≥ 0.98 and F ≥ 0.90 for size of amplitude z = 1.53 and 2.36, respectively.
