The emergence of the Qing—Zang plateau is among the most important geological events on the globe since the Cenozoic Era. Many geological issues can find answer from here. The major issues concerning plateau probably have three: (1) geodynamics, timing and speed of the plateau uplift;(2) The plateau uplift impact on surrounding environment;(3) mineral resources in the plateau. The authors want to focuses on first issue based on volcanisms occurred in interior and surrounding of the plateau, The new opinions are following:(1) Each volcanic eruptive episode corresponded to strong uplift stage;(2) The dynamic mechanism of the plateau uplift can not ignore another force from west beyond collision between Indian and Eurasia plates from South;(3) The surrounding volcanic chain is not only related to the collision from South, but also from west.

The formation of the Tibetan Plateau is closely related to the evolution of Tethys. There have been many researchers and articles concerning the Tethys since *** proposed the concept in 1893. It means a large ocean which lies between Eurasia and Gondwanaland. With the development of Tethyan research, some new terms, appeared such as Neo\|Tethys, Paleo\|Tethys, and Proto\|Tethys, representing the Tethys in Mesozoic—Cenozoic, late Paleozoic and early Paleozoic respectively. The trace of an ocean from Sinian to Ordovician was discovered during the scientific expedition and Proto\|Tethys was proposed to name the ocean. Therefore, the Tibetan Plateau is the main scope of the Eastern Tethys. It can be divided c losely related into three zones which represent the main oceanic locations in th ree different *** Northern Tethyan Region lies in the Kunlun and Qilian Mountains, its remnant is the Fifth Suture Zone. It is also the northern boundary of the Tibetan Plateau The rift initiated after the continental basement had been formed in Sinian and gradually developed into an ocean, which was named Proto\|Tethys, the earliest Tethyan ocean known up to now. The petrochemical compositions of pillow lava in this zone show the characteristics of mid\|ocean ridge tholeiite basalt and the pelagic ophiolitic flysch were well developed, indicating a matured ocean. It was closed in Ordovician and Silurian.

A Porites lutea core from Yongshu Reef of Nansha Islands covering 50 years growth history was ana-ly/ed for oxygen isotopic composition with monthly and seasonally resolution. The calibration of the δ18O with the instrumental temperature indicated that the coral δ18O is a good indicator for sea surface temperature (SST) and air temperature (t). It can be used to reconstruct the SST and air temperature of the Yongshu Reef sea area. In addition, the coral δ18O provides signatures for the intensity of the East Asia monsoon and it is a record for the activities of El Nino events. With the calibrated SST and air temperature formulas, the most recent fifty years SST and air temperature were reconstructed based on the coral δ18O, thus back up the understanding of the climate of Nansha Islands to 1950. far beyond the limit of the instrumental recording since September 1988. It was found that, in general, increasing 1℃ air temperature results in 0.24‰decrease in skeletal δ18O.

Quantitative paleoprovincialism is studied, using a coefficient of similarity (CS) formula. The results indicate that the provincialism of the late Middle through middle Late Cambrian paraconodonts and protoconodonts did exist. The provincialism of Ordovician conodonts can be traced back to late Middle Cambrian. The North china Province and South china Province can be recognized in late Middle Cambrian, whereas the North china Province, South china Province and Balitca Province can be recognized respectively in early Late Cambrian and middle Late Cambrian. The possibility that the larger units of provincialism, i.e. Faunal Regions existed in the areas mentioned above is discussed. It is inferred that the Midcontinent Faunal Region and the Atlantic Faunal Region had existed in early Late Cambrian and middle Late Cambrian. The North china Province was the secondary unit of provincialism in the Midcontinent Faunal Region, while the Baltica Province was that in the Atlantic Faunal Region. The South china

Anti-slide pile and anchoring hole are two types of reinforcement techniques popularly used in slope reinforcement. However, some defects of these two techniques are found in slope engineering practices. Utilizing higher tensile strength of pre-stressed structures, the authors devise two new types of slope reinforcement techniques, i.e. pre-stressed anchoring beam and pre-stressed anti-slide pile, in an attempt to overcome those defects of the existing techniques. These two new techniques are characterized by gathering multiple functions, e.g. engineering investigation, reinforcement, drainage, monitoring and strength supplement, so as to achieve high reinforcement efficiency, convenient checking, and higher ratio of function to cost. It is hoped that, if applying these two new techniques in remedies of landslide hazards along the Chengdu-Lhasa Highway, better reinforcement effects will be obtained.

δ^13Csc values of the loess-paleosol sequence in Dali area, Shaanxi Province, china, and paleoenvironmental implications

The carbon isotopic ratios of carbonate in the two profiles of the Dali area were analyzed and some new understandings on the influencing factors of the δ13CSC value of the loess-paleosol sequence and its paleoenvironmental implications were discussed preliminarily in this report. The 13CSC value of the Dali loess-paleosol sequence is synchronizing with the variance of magnetic susceptibility basically and the negative peaks of the δ13CSC curves are corresponding to the different developmental periods of the paleosol. It is believed that the intervention of the CO2 produced by plants will cause the decrease of the δ13CSC value, the amplitude of which may be relevant to the paleovegetation density and the ancient humidity. The relative biomass of C4 plants in the vegetation will affect the sublevel change of the δ13CSC. Low δ13CSC value by and large indicates the environmental conditions of the relatively abundant vegetation and humid climate. During the last 250000 years, the period with the sparsest vegetation and the most arid climate is the phase of the loess in L2 depositing and the period with the most abundant vegetation and the most humid climate is the last interglacial period. The δ13CSC curves of Dali also show that the High Temperature and Large Precipitation Event of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau during 40-30 kaBP had affected the Central Shaanxi Plain with relatively humid climate, and had apparent influence on the local vegetation and humidity.

The Late Neoproterozoic-Early Palaeozoic suture zones within the Central Orogenic Belt of china can be considered a system—the Kunlun-Qilian-Qinling suture system (KQQ suture system). It is basically divided into the western, central and eastern sectors. The western sector consists of the Küda-Subashi suture zone, the Mazar-Kangxiwar suture and the central West Kunlun microblock. The central sector covers the following five suture zones: the Altun, North Qilian, Qaidam northern marginal, Qimantag-Wutuo and East Kunlun southern marginal sutures, in addition to some microblocks such as the mid-south Qilian, Qaidam, Ayakkum and Maqen microblocks. The eastern sector is composed of the Shangdan suture zone, Mianlüe suture zone and central Qinling-Dabie microblock. The KQQ suture system experienced (1) extending-rifting of the Rodinia super-continent in the early-middle Sinian (～780–600 Ma); (2) the formation and evolution of the KQQ archipelagic ocean during the Late Sinian-Ordovician (～600–440 Ma), and (3) closing of the KQQ ocean and forming of the KQQ suture system during the Late Ordovician—early Silurian (～440–400 Ma). As a system comprising many suture zones and microblocks, the KQQ suture system constitutes the foundation of the Central Orogenic Belt of china.
