Lithium-sulfur batteries(LSBs)have already developed into one of the most promising new-generation high-energy density electrochemical energy storage systems with outstanding features including high-energy density,low cost,and environmental ***,the development and commercialization path of LSBs still presents significant limitations and challenges,particularly the notorious shuttle effect triggered by soluble longchain lithium polysulfides(LiPSs),which inevitably leads to low utilization of cathode active sulfur and high battery capacity degradation,short cycle life,*** research efforts have been conducted to develop various sulfur host materials capable of effectively restricting the shuttle *** review firstly introduces the fundamental electrochemical aspects of LSBs,followed by a comprehensive analysis of the mechanism underlying the shuttle effect in Li–S batteries and its profound influence on various battery components as well as the overall battery ***,recent advances and strategies are systematically reviewed,including physical confinement,chemisorption,and catalytic conversion of sulfur hosts for restricting LiPSs shuttle *** interplay mechanisms of sulfur hosts and LiPSs are discussed in detail and the structural advantages of different host materials are ***,key insights for the rational design of advanced host materials for LSBs are provided,and the upcoming challenges and the prospects for sulfur host materials in lithium-sulfur batteries are also explored.

Gradient maturation experiment on hairs implies taphonomic changes in fossil hairs

Mammalian hair, as a key feature related to endothermy, physical protection, and camouflage, has a long geohistorical record that dates back even to the Mesozoic. However, the limited information on the taphonomy of hair hinders the understanding of its evolutionary significance in deep time. To address this, we conducted taphonomic experiments to simulate the transformation process of black hair. The changes in the morphological structure, microscopic characteristics, and chemical composition of hair during the simulated fossilization process were documented by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Our results revealed that damage to the morphology of hair began at a mild temperature(150–175°C), and hair transformed into a fluid-like mass at a relatively high temperature(200°C). In addition, the morphological structure of melanosomes had relatively greater preservation potential than keratins did, and the microscopic features of melanosomes were persistently stable. The Raman and FTIR spectra indicated that the characteristic melanin and keratin peaks changed as the temperature increased. Although the chemical signals were not lost completely, the variations in the characteristic amide bands in the FTIR spectra indicate that the keratins severely degraded at high temperatures(>200°C), whereas the characteristic melanin bands in the Raman spectra suggested that melanin signals were still recognizable, even at high temperatures(>200°C). These results were confirmed by principal component analysis(PCA) and principal component analysis linear discriminant analysis(PCA–LDA). In addition, the Raman signals of all the samples in the simulated experiments were distinguished from the signals of common geological carbonaceous materials(humic acid), which suggested that Raman spectroscopy can be used to detect melanin in fossils.

A robust statistical prediction model for late-summer heavy precipitation days in North china

Recently, heavy precipitation(HP) events have occurred frequently in North china(NC), causing devastating economic losses and human fatalities. However, the short-term climate prediction of HP is quite limited. Combining year-to-year increment(DY) method and sliding correlations, we developed a robust seasonal prediction model for late-summer HP days(HPDs) in NC during 1982–2022, utilizing three independent predictors—February sea surface temperature(SST) in the Indian Ocean(SST＿IO), February snow depth over North Asia(SDE＿NA), and May melted snow depth in NC(MSDE＿NC). The SST＿IO anomalies affect NC's precipitation through the Pacific-Japan pattern. The SDE＿NA anomalies are associated with East Asian anomalous anticyclone by southeastern propagation of Rossby wave at Eurasia. The MSDE＿NC anomalies are followed by vertical motion and moisture anomalies in situ and thereby cause precipitation anomalies. This prediction model can well simulate the variations of the HPDs, with a correlation coefficient(CC) of 0.81(0.65) between the observed and predicted HPDs＿DY(HPDs＿anomaly). The percentage with the same sign for 15 extreme HPDs＿anomaly years(PSSE) is 100%.Moreover, in the cross-validation test during 1982–2022, the PSSE for HPDs＿anomaly is as high as 100%, along with a low rootmean-square error of 1.14. For independent hindcasts during 2013–2022, the CC between the observed and predicted HPDs＿DY(HPDs＿anomaly) is 0.93(0.83), together with high Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(0.82) and agreement index(0.89). Specifically, the predictions are broadly consistent with the observations for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2022, reflecting excellent performance of this prediction model of HPDs in NC.

A low redox potential and long life organic anode material for sodium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion batteries （SIBs） with organic electrodes are an emerging research direction due to the sustainability of organic materials based on elements like C,H,O,and sodium ***,organic electrode materials for SIBs are mainly used as cathodes because of their relatively high redox potentials（>1 V）.Organic electrodes with low redox potential that can be used as anode are ***,a novel organic anode material （tetrasodium 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylate,Na4TDC） has been developed with low redox potential （<0.7 V） and excellent cyclic *** three-sodium storage mechanism was demonstrated with various in-situ/ex-situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations,showing a high capacity of 208 mAh/g and an average decay rate of merely 0.022%per ***,the Na4TDC-hard carbon composite can further acquire improved capacity and cycling stability for 1200 cycles even with a high mass loading of up to 20 mg *** pairing with a thick Na3V2（PO4）3cathode (20.6 mg cm-2),the as-fabricated full cell exhibited high operating voltage （2.8 V）,excellent rate performance and cycling stability with a high capacity retention of 88.7% after 200 cycles,well highlighting the Na4TDC anode material for SIBs.

Grounded-source short offset transient electromagnetic method:Theory and applications in deep mineral exploration

Abstract The Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) method is a critical geophysical technique for subsurface exploration of metal ore bodies, primarily utilizing either loop or grounded transmitters. The Long Offset Transient Electromagnetic(LOTEM) method employs a grounded-source transmitter, relying on a far-source observation mode and plane wave approximation for detection. However, LOTEM’s far-source configuration weakens signal strength, and the plane wave approximation reduces precision, limiting effective detection depth to approximately 1000 m with a comprehensive error of about 15%. Recently, we have developed the grounded-source Short Offset Transient Electromagnetic (SOTEM) method,achieving greater detection depth and accuracy within the 500–2000 m depth range, a crucial interval for mineral resource exploration. This study explores the theoretical framework, instrumentation, data processing, and field applications of SOTEM. Based on a point charge element model, SOTEM accurately computes surface wave effects in EM field calculations,optimized for near-source observation. High-power, high-resolution, wide-bandwidth exploration equipment and an advanced three-dimensional hybrid inversion technique were also developed to enhance the method’s effectiveness. Application of SOTEM to the deep exploration of the zhou’an Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in Henan Province yielded high-resolution imaging of conductivity structures to about 2.5 km depth. These results, consistent with existing drill data, delineated mineralized ore bodies from surrounding formations, identified zones of mineralization potential, and suggested extensive resource prospects in the region.

Mixed matrix membranes(MMMs)have demonstrated significant promise in energy-intensive gas separations by amalgamating the unique properties of fillers with the facile processability of ***,achieving a simultaneous enhancement of permeability and selectivity remains a formidable challenge,due to the difficulty of achieving an optimal match between polymers and *** this study,we incorporate a porous carbon-based zinc oxide composite(C@ZnO)into high-permeability polymers of intrinsic microporosity(PIMs)to fabricate *** dipole–dipole interaction between C@ZnO and PIMs ensures their exceptional compatibility,mitigating the formation of non-selective voids in the resulting ***,C@ZnO with abundant interconnected pores can provide additional low-resistance pathways for gas transport in *** a result,the CO_(2) permeability of the optimized C@ZnO/PIM-1 MMMs is elevated to 13,215 barrer,while the CO_(2)/N_(2) and CO_(2)/CH4 selectivity reached 21.5 and 14.4,respectively,substantially surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper ***,molecular simulation results further corroborate that the augmented membrane gas selectivity is attributed to the superior CO_(2) affinity of C@*** summary,we believe that this work not only expands the application of MMMs for gas separation but also heralds a paradigm shift in the application of porous carbon materials.

Postnatal development of rat retina:a continuous observation and comparison between the organotypic retinal explant model and in vivo development

The organotypic retinal explant culture has been established for more than a decade and offers a range of unique advantages compared with in vivo experiments and cell ***,the lack of systematic and continuous comparison between in vivo retinal development and the organotypic retinal explant culture makes this model controversial in postnatal retinal development ***,we aimed to verify the feasibility of using this model for postnatal retinal development studies by comparing it with the in vivo *** this study,we showed that postnatal retinal explants undergo normal development,and exhibit a consistent structure and timeline with retinas in ***,we used SOX2 and PAX6 immunostaining to identify retinal progenitor *** then examined cell proliferation and migration by immunostaining with Ki-67 and doublecortin,***-67-and doublecortin-positive cells decreased in both in vivo and explants during postnatal retinogenesis,and exhibited a high degree of similarity in abundance and distribution between ***,we used Ceh-10 homeodomain-containing homolog,glutamate-ammonia ligase(glutamine synthetase),neuronal nuclei,and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 immunostaining to examine the emergence of bipolar cells,Müller glia,mature neurons,and microglia,*** timing and spatial patterns of the emergence of these cell types were remarkably consistent between in vivo and explant *** study showed that the organotypic retinal explant culture model had a high degree of consistency with the progression of in vivo early postnatal retina *** findings confirm the accuracy and credibility of this model and support its use for long-term,systematic,and continuous observation.

Recent development in electrode design for wide-temperature supercapacitors

An ever-increasing market demand has stimulated the soaring enthusiasm of researchers to develop wide-temperature supercapacitors(SCs). The active electrode is one of the most important parts of SC, which is directly related to the energy density,power transmission and long-term cyclability of the device in the wide-temperature environment. Compared with the SC electrodes aimed for room-temperature application, the SC electrodes for operating at wide-temperature scene often face greater challenges. In this review, the main challenges of SC electrodes under various temperature conditions, including low, high and cross-fade temperatures, are summarized. The relevant performance decay and failure mechanisms of wide-temperature SC electrodes are analyzed. In addition, this review deals with the recent studies and developments in robust wide-temperature SC electrodes with respect to the rational design of electrode structures and the exploitation of advanced active materials. Finally, the future directions for exploring reliable wide-temperature SCs are also proposed.

Efficient large-area flexible organic photovoltaic modules on transparent thin silver electrodes

Large-area flexible organic photovoltaic（OPV） modules are challenging to achieve high power conversion efficiency（PCE）.Electrical shunts or shortages generally occur in large-area OPV modules due to the ultrathin（100–200 nm） and soft active layers. Improving the surface smoothness of bottom transparent electrode will be able to suppress the shunts and shortages. In this work, we report a method to fabricate smooth and flexible transparent electrodes based on thin silver film, and further to fabricate efficient large-area flexible OPV modules. The fabricated thin silver transparent electrodes simultaneously have high conductivity, high optical transmittance, good mechanical flexibility and low surface roughness. Humidity exposure（h.e.）treatment on MoO3effectively facilitates the continuous growth of the thin transparent silver electrode. 6 nm silver film on MoO3（h.e.） on plastic substrate shows a transmittance up to 89%, a sheet resistance of 15 Ω/sq, and a low surface roughness with a rootmean-square value of 0.276 nm. Furthermore, 52-cm2flexible organic solar modules（15 subcells） showed a certified PCE of12.66%. Furthermore, a 1350 cm2flexible component assembled by 25 pieces of 52–55 cm2modules showed certified PCE of12.10% with an open-circuit voltage of 62.85 V.
