Background： Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 （ALDH2） is involved in the pathophysiological processes of cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies showed that mutant ALDH2 could increase oxidative stress and is a susceptible factor for hypertension. In addition, wild-type ALDH2 could improve the endothelial functions, therefore reducing the risk of developing atherosclerosis. The aim of the present study was to explore the frequency of the Glu504Lys polymorphism of the ALDH2 gene and its relation to carotid intima-media thickness （CIMT） in a group of patients with essential hypertension （EH） and to investigate the association between the Glu504Lys polymorphism and CIMT in Chinese Han patients with EH. Methods： In this study, 410 Chinese Han patients with EH who received physical examinations at the People＇s Hospital of Sichuan Province （China） were selected. DNA microarray chip was used for the genotyping of the Glu504Lys polymorphism of the ALDH2 gene. The differences in CIMT among patients with different Glu504Lys ALDH2 genotypes were analyzed. Results： The mean CIMT of the patients carrying AA/AG and GG genotypes was 1.02 ± 0.31 mm and 0.78 ±0.28 mm, respectively. One-way ANOVA showed that the CIMT of the patients carrying the AA/AG genotype was significantly higher than in the ones carrying the GG genotype （P 〈 0.001）. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the Glu504Lys AA/AG genotype of the ALDH2 gene was one of the major factors influencing the CIMT in patients with EH （odds ratio = 3.73 l, 95% confidence interval = 1.589-8.124, P = 0.001）. Conclusions： The Glu504Lys polymorphism of the ALDH2 gene is associated with the CIMT of Chinese Han patients with EH in Sichuan, China.

Scholarships are a reflection of academic achievement for college students.The traditional scholarship assignment is strictly based on final grades and cannot recognize students whose performance trend improves or declines during the semester.This paper develops the Trajectory Mining on Clustering for Scholarship Assignment and Academic Warning(TMS)approach to identify the factors that affect the academic achievement of college students and to provide decision support to help low-performing students attain better performance.Specifically,we first conduct feature engineering to generate a set of features to characterize the lifestyles patterns,learning patterns,and Internet usage patterns of students.We then apply the objective and subjective combined weighted k-means(Wosk-means)algorithm to perform clustering analysis to identify the characteristics of different student groups.Considering the difficulty in obtaining the real global positioning system(GPS)records of students,we apply manually generated spatiotemporal trajectories data to quantify the direction of trajectory deviation with the assistance of the PrefixSpan algorithm to identify low-performing students.The experimental results show that the silhouette coefficient and Calinski-Harabasz index of the Wosk-means algorithm are both approximately 1.5 times to that of the best baseline algorithm,and the sum of the squared error of the Wosk-means algorithm is only the half of the best baseline algorithm.

Orthopedic implants for the treatment of bone defects from various causes have been challenged by insufficient osseointegration,bacterial infection,oxidative stress,immune rejection,and insufficient individualized treatment.These challenges not only impact treatment outcomes but also severely impact patients’daily lives.Layer-by-Layer(LbL)serves as a simple surface coating technique,in simple terms,to functionalize implants by sequentially adsorbing oppositely charged materials onto a substrate.In orthopaedics,LbL self-assembly technology solves some of the challenges by loading various drugs or biological agents on the implant surface and controlling their release precisely to the site of bone defects in a personalized way.This review will introduce the basic principle and the development of LbL in orthopaedics,review and analyze the chemical strategy of LbL in the preparation of bone implants to ensure the stability of the implant,and introduce the use of LbL bone implants in orthopaedics in recent years.The application of LbL includes the realization of programmed drug delivery and sustained release,thereby promoting osseointegration and the formation of new blood vessels,antibacterial,antioxidant,etc.This review focuses on the LbL technology,involving the technology selection for the preparation of bone implants,the chemical strategies of the stability guarantee of LbL implants,the pharmacological properties,loading and release mechanisms of loaded drugs,and the molecular mechanisms of osteogenesis and angiogenesis.The aim of this review is to provide an overview of current research advances,and a prospect in this field was also described.

magnolia sinica is one of the most endangered magnoliaceae species in China.Seed biology information concerning its long-term ex situ conservation and utilization is insufficient.This study investigated dormancy status,germination requirements and storage behavior of M.sinica.Freshly matured seeds germinated to ca.86.5%at 25/15℃but poorly at 30℃;GA3 and moist chilling promoted germination significantly at 20℃.Embryos grew at temperatures(alternating or constant)between 20℃and 25℃,but not at 5℃or 30℃.Our results indicate that M.sinica seeds possibly have non-deep simple mor-phophysiological dormancy(MPD).Seeds survived desiccation to 9.27%and 4.85%moisture content(MC)as well as a further 6-month storage at-20℃and in liquid nitrogen,including recovery in vitro as excised embryos.The established protocol ensured that at least 58%of seedlings were obtained after both cold storage and cryopreservation.These results indicate that both conventional seed banking and cryopreservation have potential as long-term ex situ conservation methods,although further optimized approaches are recommended for this critically endangered magnolia species.

Different hydraulic retention times(HRTs)were tested in a mixed anoxic/oxic(A/O)system at 5C and 10C to investigate the effects of HRT and carrier on nitrogen removal in wastewater at low temperatures.The results showed that the addition of the fillers improved the treatment effect of each index in the system.With an optimal HRT of 7.5 h at 5C,the removal efficiencies of NHþ4-N and total nitrogen(TN)reached 91.2%and 75.6%,respectively.With an HRT of 6 h at 10C,the removal efficiencies of NHþ4-N and TN were 96.7%and 82.9%,respectively.The results of high-throughput sequencing showed that the addition of the suspended carriers in the aerobic zone could improve the treatment efficiency of nitrogen at low temperatures.The microbial analysis indicated that the addition of the suspended carriers enhanced the enrichment of nitrogen removal bacteria.Nitrospira,Nitrotoga,and Nitrosomonas were found to be the bacteria responsible for nitrification,and their relative concentrations on the biofilm at 5C and 10C accounted for 98.11%,92.79%,and 69.98%of all biological samples,respectively.

Porosity and permeability variations of a dam curtain during dissolution

During reservoir operation,the erosion effects of groundwater change the porosity and permeability of the dam curtain,causing changes to the seepage field.To understand where the changes take place and to what degree the porosity and permeability change,a multi-field coupling model was built and solved.The model takes into account seepage,solution concentration,and solid structure.The model was validated using uplift pressure monitoring data.Then,the variations in curtain porosity,seepage flow,and loss quantity of Ca(OH)2 were calculated.The key time nodes were obtained through curve fitting of the variation of seepage flow with the BiDoseResp function.The results showed that the model could reflect the attenuation trend of curtain performance well.The process and position of the erosion were not homogeneous.Although erosion mainly occurred at the top and bottom of the curtain,it was most developed at the top.The erosion effects developed slowly during the early stage,much fast during the middle and late stages,and culminated in complete dissolution.The model results and the daily monitoring data can provide a scientific basis for the safe operation and management of reservoirs.

Oligosaccharides are low molecular weight carbohydrates between monosaccharides and poly-saccharides,which consist of 2 to 20 monosaccharides linked by glycosidic bonds.They have the effects of promoting growth,regulating immunity,improving the structure of intestinal flora,and are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.With the comprehensive implementation of the antibiotic prohibition policy in China,oligosaccharides as new green feed additive have been paid more attention.Oligosac-charides can be divided into the following 2 categories according to their digestive characteristics:one is easy to be absorbed by the intestine,called common oligosaccharides,such as sucrose and maltose oligosaccharide;the other is difficult to be absorbed by the intestine and has special physiological functions,called functional oligosaccharides.The common functional oligosaccharides include mannan oligosaccharides(MOS),fructo-oligosaccharides(FOS),chitosan oligosaccharides(COS),xylo-oligosaccharides(XOS)and so on.In this paper,we review the types and sources of functional oligo-saccharides,their application in pig nutrition,and the factors limiting their efficacy in recent years.This review provides the theoretical basis for further research of functional oligosaccharides,and the future application of alternative antibiotics in pig industry.

Dysregulation of hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated cation(HCN)channels alters neuronal excitability.However,the role of HCN channels in status epilepticus is not fully understood.In this study,we established rat models of pentylenetetrazole-induced status epilepticus.We performed western blot assays and immunofluorescence staining.Our results showed that HCN1 channel protein expression,particularly HCN1 surface protein,was significantly decreased in the hippocampal CA1 region,whereas the expression of HCN2 channel protein was unchanged.Moreover,metabolic glutamate receptor 1(mGluR1)protein expression was increased after status epilepticus.The mGluR1 agonist(RS)-3,5-dihydroxyphenylglycine injected intracerebroventricularly increased the sensitivity and severity of pentylenetetrazole-induced status epilepticus,whereas application of the mGluR1 antagonist(+)-2-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine(LY367385)alleviated the severity of pentylenetetrazole-induced status epilepticus.The results from double immunofluorescence labeling revealed that mGluR1 and HCN1 were co-localized in the CA1 region.Subsequently,a protein kinase A inhibitor(H89)administered intraperitoneally successfully reversed HCN1 channel inhibition,thereby suppressing the severity and prolonging the latency of pentylenetetrazole-induced status epilepticus.Furthermore,H89 reduced the level of mGluR1,downregulated cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP)/protein kinase A expression,significantly increased tetratricopeptide repeat-containing Rab8b-interacting protein(TRIP8b)(1a-4)expression,and restored TRIP8b(1b-2)levels.TRIP8b(1a-4)and TRIP8b(1b-2)are subunits of Rab8b interacting protein that regulate HCN1 surface protein.

Texture Repairing by Unified Low Rank Optimization

In this paper, we show how to harness both low-rank and sparse structures in regular or near-regular textures for image completion. Our method is based on a unified formulation for both random and contiguous corruption. In addition to the low rank property of texture, the algorithm also uses the sparse assumption of the natural image： because the natural image is pieeewise smooth, it is sparse in certain transformed domain （such as Fourier or wavelet transform）. We combine low-rank and sparsity properties of the texture image together in the proposed algorithm. Our algorithm based on convex optimization can automatically and correctly repair the global structure of a corrupted texture, even without precise information about the regions to be completed. This algorithm integrates texture rectification and repairing into one optimization problem. Through extensive simulations, we show our method can complete and repair textures corrupted by errors with both random and contiguous supports better than existing low-rank matrix recovery methods. Our method demonstrates significant advantage over local patch based texture synthesis techniques in dealing with large corruption, non-uniform texture, and large perspective deformation.
