Secondary diabetes due to different etiologies:Four case reports

BACKGROUND As research on diabetes continues to advance,more complex classifications of this disease have emerged,revealing the existence of special types of diabetes,and many of these patients are prone to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis,leading to treatment delays and increased health care *** purpose of this study was to identify four causes of secondary *** SUMMARY Secondary diabetes can be caused by various factors,some of which are often *** factors include genetic defects,autoimmune disorders,and diabetes induced by *** paper describes four types of secondary diabetes caused by Williams–Beuren syndrome,Prader–Willi syndrome,pituitary adenoma,and IgG4-related *** cases deviate significantly from the typical progression of the disease due to their low incidence and rarity,often leading to their neglect in clinical *** comparison to regular diabetes patients,the four individuals described here exhibited distinct *** hypoglycaemic treatments failed to effectively control the ***,a series of examinations and follow-up history confirmed the diagnosis and underlying cause of *** addressing the primary condition,such as excising a pituitary adenoma,providing glucocorticoid supplementation,and implementing symptomatic treatments,all patients experienced a considerable decrease in blood glucose levels,which were subsequently maintained within a stable ***,other accompanying symptoms *** Rare diseases causing secondary diabetes are often not considered in the diag-nosis of ***,it is crucial to conduct genetic tests,antibody detection and other appropriate diagnostic measures when necessary to facilitate early diagnosis and intervention through proactive and efficient management of the underlying condition,ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Mating behaviors are controlled by genetically hardwired circuits(Figure 1A),which endow sexually mature animals with the ability to respond appropriately upon encounters with conspecifics of the opposite sex without needing prior training,thereby facilitating propagation of the species(Chen&hong,2018;Wei et al.,2021;xiao et al.,2022).When a male mouse meets a female mouse in estrus and wants to initiate mating,he usually shows appetitive investigation by approaching the female and sniffing her genital area;afterward,the male places his forepaws on the back of the female,a behavior called mounting(Figure 1B).

Inhibition of Excitatory Amino Acid Efflux Contributes to Protective Effects of Puerarin Against Cerebral Ischemia in Rats

To investigate whether the protective effects of puerarine （Pur） against cerebral ischemia is associated with depressing the extracellular levels of amino acid transmitters in brain of rats. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion （MCAO） for 60 min followed by 24 h reperfusion. Put （50, 100 mg/kg, i.p.） was administered at the onset of MCAO. The infarct rate and edema rate were detected on TTC （2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride）-stained coronal sections. The extracellular levels of amino acid transmitters were monitored in striatum of rats with ischemic/reperfusion injury using in vivo microdialysis technique. Furthermore, the protective effects of Pur against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity were detected. Glutamate-induced apoptotic and necrotic cells in hippocampus were estimated by flow cytometric analysis of Annexin-V and PI labeling cells. Results Pur （100 mg/kg） significantly decreased infarct size by 31.6% （P〈0.05）, reduced edema volume （P〈0.05）, and improved neurological functions （P〈0.05） following MCAO. In these rats, the ischemia-induced extracellular levels of aspartate （Asp）, glutamate （Glu）, γ-aminobutyric acid （GABA）, and taurine （Tau） were significantly reduced in striatum of vehicle-treated animals by 54.7%, 56.7%, 75.8%, and 68.1% （P〈0.01 and P〈0.05）. Pur reduced the peak values of Glu and Asp more obviously than those of GABA and Tau, and the rate of Glu/GABA during MCAO markedly decreased in Pur-treated MCAO rats, compared with the vehicle-treated MCAO rats. Meanwhile, apoptosis and necrosis induced by Glu in cultured hippocampal neurons were significantly reduced after Pur treatment. Conclusion Acute treatment with Put at the onset of occlusion significantly depresses ischemia-induced efflux of amino acids, especially, excitotoxicity in the striatum, a mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect on cellular survival.

Room-temperature ferromagnetism enhancement in Fe-doped VSe2nanosheets synthesized by a chemical method

Two-dimensional(2 D)few-layerVSe_(2),V_(1-x)Fe_(x)Se_(2) nanosheets have been synthesized by a hightemperature organic solution-phase method. The thickness of VSe_(2) nanosheets can be tuned from 12 to 5 layers by decreasing the precursor concentrations. The few-layer VSe_(2) nanosheets show the room-temperature ferromagnetism. The coercivity and magnetization reach 0.024 T and 0.036 mA·m^(2)·g^(-1) at room temperature. The chargedensity wave behavior is also confirmed in VSe_(2) by the hysteresis loops and zero-field-cooling curve. V_(1-x)Fe_(x)Se_(2) nanosheets can be obtained by doping Fe(acac)3 in the reaction process. The room-temperature coercivity and magnetization of V_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)Se_(2) nanosheets are 5 times higher than those of the pure VSe_(2) nanosheets without destroying the structures. The enhancement of magnetization is due to the coupling interaction of 3 d orbits between V and Fe atoms. Higher Fe concentration is beneficial to improve the coercivity, which is attributed to the formation of the second phase Fe3 Se4. This simple chemical preparation method can be extended to prepare the other 2 D materials.

Despite extensive characterization of sex differences in the medial preoptic area(mPOA)of the hypothalamus,we know surprisingly little about whether or how male and female mPOA neurons differ electrophysiologically,especially in terms of neuronal firing and behavioral pattern *** this study,by performing whole-cell patch clamp recordings of the mPOA,we investigated the influences of sex,cell type,and gonadal hormones on the electrophysiological properties of mPOA ***,we uncovered significant sex differences in input resistance(male>female)and in the percentage of neurons that displayed post-inhibitory rebound(male>female).Furthermore,we found that the current mediated by the T-type Ca^(2+)channel(IT),which is known to underlie post-inhibitory rebound,was indeed larger in male mPOA ***,we have identified salient electrophysiological properties of mPOA neurons,namely IT and post-inhibitory rebound,that are male-biased and likely contribute to the sexually dimorphic display of behaviors.
