Seismogenic model of the 2023 MW5.5 Pingyuan earthquake in North China Plain and its tectonic implications

The 6 August 2023 MW5.5 Pingyuan earthquake is the largest earthquake in the central North China Plain (NCP) over the past two decades. Due to the thick sedimentary cover, no corresponding active faults have been reported yet in the epicenter area. Thus, this earthquake presents a unique opportunity to delve into the buried active faults beneath the NCP. By integrating strong ground motion records, high-precision aftershock sequence relocation, and focal mechanism solutions, we gain insights into the seismotectonics of the Pingyuan earthquake. The aftershocks are clustered at depths ranging from 15 to 20 km and delineate a NE-SW trend, consistent with the distribution of ground motion records. A NE-SW nodal plane (226°) of the focal mechanism solutions is also derived from regional waveform inversion, suggesting that the mainshock was dominated by strike-slip motion with minor normal faulting component. Integrating regional geological data, we propose that an unrecognized fault between the NE-SW trending Gaotang and Lingx.an-Yangx.n faults is the seismogenic fault of this event. Based on the S-wave velocity structure beneath the NCP, this fault probably ex.ends into the lower crust with a high angle. Considering the tectonic regime and stress state, we speculate that the interplay of shear strain between the Amurian and South China blocks and the hot upwelling magma from the subducted paleo Pacific flat slab significantly contributed to the generation of the Pingyuan earthquake. © 2024 The Authors

＜正＞A simple, rapid and inex.ensive ex.raction and analysis procedure of three phthalate esters （dimethy-, diethyl- and di-n-butyl phthalate esters） in water samples was presented using single-drop solvent ex.raction （SDSE） and gas chromatography combined flame ionization detector （GC-FID）. Ex.raction of phthalates was achieved by suspending 2 μL of toluene drop to the needle tip of a microsyringe in a stirred aqueous solution. The toluene drop was withdrawn into the microsyringe and injected directly into the gas chromatography. Parameters such as ex.raction solvent, organic drop volume, salt concentration, and sampling time were optimized. Calibration curves of three phthalate yielded good linearity （r2≥0.99367）. The limits of detection （LODs） of dimethy-, diethyl- and di-n-butyl phthalate esters were 2.01,0.96 and 0.84 μg L-1, respectively. Relative standard deviations （RSD%） in Milli-Q water ranged from 1.01 to 2.35%. Spiked recoveries of tap water and river water agreed well with the known values between 91.75 and 107.58%, demonstrating that SDSE was a useful and reliable technique for the rapid screening of phthalates in water samples. The applicability of this method was developed in analysis of the tap water in a special plastic container heated in a microwave oven.

In situ digital testing method for quality assessment of soft soil improvement with polyurethane

This study purposes an in situ testing method on quality assessment of soil *** drilling data includes the spatial distribution and in situ strength of untreated and treated soil along three different drillholes measured by on-site drilling monitoring *** factual drilling data can characterize the degree of soil improvement by penetration injection with permeable *** from on-site drilling monitoring shows that the linear zones represent constant drilling speeds shown in the plot of drill bit advancement *** drilling time,which indicates the spatial distributions of soil *** soil profile at the study site is composed of four layers,which includes fill,untreated silty clay,treated silty clay,and mucky *** results of soil profile are verified by the parallel site *** constant drilling speeds profile the coring-resistant strength of drilled *** comparing with the untreated silty clay,the constant drilling speeds of the treated silty clay have been decreased by 13.0-62.8%.Two drilling-speed-based indices of 61.2%and 65.6%are proposed to assess the decreased average drilling speed and the increased in situ strength of treated silty *** tests,*** compressive strength(UCS)test,have been performed with core sample to investigate and characterize in situ strength by comparing that with drilling *** show that the average predicted strengths of treated silty clay are 2.4-6.9 times higher than the average measured strength of untreated silty *** UCS-based indices of 374.5%and 344.2%verified the quality assessment(QA)results by this new in situ *** method provides a cost-effective tool for quality assessment of soil improvement by utilizing the digital drilling data.

The magnetotail current sheet is active and often flaps back and *** about the flapping motion of current sheet is essential to ex.lore the related magnetotail dynamic processes,e.g.,plasma *** to the inability of single-point measurements to separate the spatial-temporal variation of magnetic field,the moving velocity of flapping current sheets cannot be revealed generally until the multipoint measurements are available,e.g.,the Cluster ***,currently,the flapping behaviors are hard to be resolved only relying on single-point magnetic field *** this study,with minimum variance analysis,we develop a technique based on single-point magnetic field measurement to qualitatively diagnose the flapping properties including the flapping type and the traveling direction of kink-like *** comparison with Cluster multipoint analysis via several case studies demonstrates that this technique is applicable;it should,however,be used with caution especially when the local sheet surface is either quasi-horizontal,or *** technique will be useful for the planetary magnetotail ex.loration where no multipoint observations are available.

The Brown-Preston-Singleton(BPS)stopping power model is added to our previously developed hybrid code to model ion beam-plasma *** simulations show that both resistive field and ion scattering effects are important for proton beam transport in a solid target,in which they compete with each *** the target is not completely ionized,the self-generated resistive field effect dominates over the ion scattering ***,when the target is completely ionized,this situation is ***,it is found that Ohmic heating is important for higher current densities and materials with high *** energy fraction deposited as Ohmic heating can be as high as 20%-30%.Typical ion divergences with half-angles of about 5°-10°will modify the proton energy deposition substantially and should be taken into account.

A MODEL FOR NUMERICAL CALCULATION OF UNSTEADYTEMPERATURE FIELD

The model established in this paper for calculating the unsteady temperature field, in which physical parameters varies with temperatures, is simplified as compared with the classical one by defining the heat conductivity as function of temperature and dealing with the latent heat of phase transformation and boundary conditions. The results show that the probability of absolute error less 2℃ between the calculated and measured values in temperature field calculation reaches above 80%.

Interfacial stress engineering toward enhancement of ferroelectricity in Al doped HfO2 thin films

Ferroelectric HfO2 has attracted much attention owing to its superior ferroelectricity at an ultra-thin thickness and good compatibility with Si-based complementary metal-ox.de-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. However, the crystallization of polar orthorhombic phase (o-phase) HfO2 is less competitive, which greatly limits the ferroelectricity of the as-obtained ferroelectric HfO2 thin films. Fortunately, the crystallization of o-phase HfO2 can be thermodynamically modulated via interfacial stress engineering. In this paper, the growth of improved ferroelectric Al doped HfO2 (HfO2:Al) thin films on (111)-oriented Si substrate has been reported. Structural analysis has suggested that nonpolar monoclinic HfO2:Al grown on (111)-oriented Si substrate suffered from a strong compressive strain, which promoted the crystallization of (111)-oriented o-phase HfO2 in the as-grown HfO2:Al thin films. In addition, the in-plane lattice of (111)-oriented Si substrate matches well with that of (111)-oriented o-phase HfO2, which further thermally stabilizes the o-phase HfO2. Accordingly, an improved ferroelectricity with a remnant polarization (2P(r)) of 26.7 mu C/cm(2) has been obtained. The results shown in this work provide a simple way toward the preparation of improved ferroelectric HfO2 thin films.
