Seabirds are valuable indicators of marine ecosystem processes and studying seabird diets can shed light on natural or human-induced variability in food-web composition. Specifically single-prey loading seabird species such as terns have the potential to act as visual sentinels of prey availability offshore. However, obtaining diet information from remote bird colonies is often challenging and time consuming. In this pilot study we present a novel approach to combine two established methods to study seabird foraging ecology, providing a powerful and cost-effective tool to study the distribution of prey items available to seabirds. We combined GPS tracking data of Sandwich Terns(Thalasseus sandvicensis) with prey-observations from a hide in 2012 and 2013, and from semicontinuously recorded camera footage in 2017. By doing so, we identified 115 approximate catch locations of prey(86 herring/sprat Clupeidae, 29 sandeel Ammodytidae). Longitudinal bending stiffness does not affect running economy in Nike Vaporfly Shoes

Purpose This study aimed to determine the independent effect of the curved carbon-fiber plate in the Nike Vaporfly 4%shoe on running economy and running *** Fifteen healthy male runners completed a metabolic protocol and a biomechanics *** both protocols participants wore 2 different shoes,an intact Nike Vaporfly 4%(VF_(intact))and a cut Nike Vaporfly 4%(VF_(cut)).The VF_(cut) had 6 medio-lateral cuts through the carbon-fiber plate in the forefoot to reduce the effectiveness of the *** the metabolic protocol,participants ran at 14 km/h for 5 min,twice with each shoe,on a force-measuring treadmill while we measured metabolic *** the biomechanics protocol,participants ran across a runway with embedded force plates at 14 km/*** calculated running economy,kinetics,and lower limb joint *** Running economy did not significantly differ between shoe conditions(on average,0.55%±1.77%(mean±SD))worse in the VF_(cut) compared to the VF_(intact);95%confidence interval(-1.44%to 0.40%).Biomechanical differences were only found in the metatarsophalangeal(MTP)joint with increased MTP dorsiflexion angle,angular velocity,and negative power in the VF_(cut).Contact time was 1%longer in the VF_(intact).Conclusion Cutting the carbon-fiber plate and reducing the longitudinal bending stiffness did not have a significant effect on the energy savings in the Nike Vaporfly 4%.This suggests that the plate's stiffening effect on the MTP joint plays a limited role in the reported energy savings,and instead savings are likely from a combination and interaction of the foam,geometry,and plate.

The physiological control of stomatal opening by which plants adjust for water availability has been extensively ***,the impact of water availability on stomatal development has not received as much attention,especially for amphistomatic ***,the acclimation of stomatal development in basil(Ocimum basilicum L.)leaves was *** results show that leaves developed under water-deficit conditions possess higher stomatal densities and decreased stomatal length for both the adaxial and abaxial leaf *** the stomatal developmental reaction to water deficit was similar for the two leaf surfaces,it was proven that adaxial stomata are more sensitive to water stress than abaxial stomata,with more closed adaxial stomata under water-deficit ***,plants with leaves containing smaller stomata at higher densities possessed a higher water use *** findings highlight the importance of stomatal development as a tool for long-term acclimation to limit water loss,with minimal reduction in biomass *** highlights the central role that stomata play in both the short(opening)and long-term(development)reaction of plants to water availability,making them key tools for efficient resource use and anticipation of future environmental changes.

SIZE MATTERS:PITCH DIMENSIONS CONSTRAIN INTERACTIVE TEAM BEHAVIOUR IN SOCCER

Pitch size varies in official soccer matches and differently sized pitches are adopted for tactical purposes in small-sided training games. Since interactive team behaviour emerges under constraints, the authors evaluate the effect of pitch size （task） manipulations on interactive team behaviour in small-sided soccer games. Four 4-a-side （plus goalkeepers） small-sided games were played： a reference game （30×20 m）, length manipulation （24×20 m）, width manipulation （30×16 m）, and a combina- tion （2× 16 m）. Using position data （100Hz）, three measures quantifying the teams＇ interaction were calculated： longitudinal inter-team distance, laterM inter-team distance, and surface area difference. Means and standard deviations, correlations and coupling values were calculated. Running correlations were calculated over a 3-s window to evaluate interaction patterns. As expected, a shorter pitch results in smaller longitudinal inter-team distance, lateral inter-team distance decreased for narrow pitches, and smaller total playing area resulted in decreased surface area. Unanticipated, a crossover effect was present; length and width manipulations also triggered changes in lateral and longitudinal direction respectively. Inter-team distances and surface area difference differed significantly across conditions. Interaction patterns differed across conditions for all measures. So, highly tactically relevant, soccer teams seem to adapt their interactive behaviour according to pitch size in small-sided gaines.

Metabolic cost of level,uphill,and downhill running in highly cushioned shoes with carbon-fiber plates

Background:Compared to conventional racing shoes,Nike Vaporfly 4% running shoes reduce the metabolic cost of level treadmill running by4%.The reduction is attributed to their lightweight,highly compliant,and resilient midsole foam and a midsole-embedded curved carbon-fiber *** investigated whether these shoes also could reduce the metabolic cost of moderate uphill(+3°) and downhill(-3°) *** tested the null hypothesis that,compared to conventional racing shoes,highly cushioned shoes with carbon-fiber plates would impart the same ~4%metabolic power(W/kg) savings during uphill and downhill running as they do during level ***:After familiarization,16 competitive male runners performed six 5-min trials(2 shoes × 3 grades) in 2 Nike marathon racing-shoe models(Streak 6 and Vaporfly 4%) on a level,uphill(+3°),and downhill(-3°) treadmill at 13 km/h(3.61 m/s).We measured submaximal oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production during Minutes 4-5 and calculated metabolic power(W/kg) for each shoe model and grade ***:Compared to the conventional shoes(Streak 6),the metabolic power in the Vaporfly 4% shoes was 3.83%(level),2.82%(uphill),and2.70%(downhill)less(all p <0.001).The percent of change in metabolic power for uphill running was less compared to level running(p=0.04;effect size(ES)=0.561) but was not statistically different between downhill and level running(p=0.17;ES=0.356).Conclusion:On a running course with uphill and downhill sections,the metabolic savings and hence performance enhancement provided by Vaporfly 4% shoes would likely be slightly less overall,compared to the savings on a perfectly level race course.

Comprehensive validation of a diagnostic strategy for sequencing genes with one or multiple pseudogenes using pseudoxanthoma elasticum as a model

Pseudogenes are frequently encountered noncoding sequences with a high sequence similarity to their protein-coding *** this reason,their presence is often considered troublesome in molecular *** pseudoxanthoma elasticum(PXE),a disease predominantly caused by mutations in ATPbinding cassette family C member 6(ABCC6),the presence of two pseudogenes complicates the analysis of sequence *** whole-exome sequencing(WES)becoming the standard of care in molecular diagnostics,we wanted to evaluate whether this technique is as reliable as gene-specific targeted enrichment analysis for the analysis of *** established a PCR-based targeted enrichment and next-generation sequencing testing approach and demonstrated that the ABCC6-specific enrichment combined with the applied mapping algorithm overcomes the complication of ABCC6 pseudogene aspecificities,contrary to *** propose a time-and cost-efficient diagnostic strategy for comprehensive and accurate molecular genetic testing of PXE,which is highly automatable.
