Plants are a rich source of valuable secondary metabolites and in the recent years plant cell, tissue and organ cultures have been developed as an important alternative sources for the production of these compounds. Adventitious roots have been successfully induced in many plant species and cultured for the production of high value secondary metabolites of pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and industrial importance. Adoption of elicitation methods have shown improved synthesis of secondary metabolites in adventitious root cultures. Development of large-scale culture methods using bioreactors has opened up feasibilities of production of secondary metabolites at the industrial levels. In the present review we summarize the progress made in recent past in the area of adventitious root cultures for the production of secondary metabolites.

The current status of 2D organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites for use in photovoltaic(PV)and light-emitting diode(LED)applications lags far behind their 3D ***,we propose a computational strategy for discovering novel perovskites with as few computing resources as possible.A tandem optimization algorithm consisting of an elitism-reinforced nondominated sorting genetic algorithm(NSGA-II)and a multiobjective Bayesian optimization(MOBO)algorithm was used for density functional theory(DFT)*** DFT-calculated band gap and effective mass were taken as objective functions to be optimized,and the constituent molecules and elements of a Ruddlesden–Popper(RP)structure(n=2)were taken as decision *** previously unknown RP perovskite candidates for PV and LED applications were discovered as a result of the NSGA-II/MOBO ***,more accurate DFT calculations based on the HSE06 exchange correlation functional and ab initio molecular dynamics(AIMD)were conducted for the discovered 2D perovskites to ensure their validity.

Korean ginseng and mountain ginseng （Panax ginseng CA Meyer） are important traditional herbal plants whose ginsenosides are generally accepted as serving to improve sexual functions, such as penile erection. We investigated the effects of tissue-cultured mountain ginseng extract （TMGE） on male patients with erectile dysfunction （ED）. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted with 143 patients experiencing ED. Over the course of 8 weeks, one group took 1 000 mg of TMGE twice a day, and the other group took 1 000 mg of placebo twice a day. The effects of the TMGE and the placebo were analyzed using the Korean version of the International Index of Erectile Function （IIEF） questionnaire. A total of 86 patients completed 8 weeks of treatment. The scores on the five domains of the IIEF after medication were significantly higher than the baseline scores in the group treated with TMGE （P 〈 0.05）, whereas no significant improvement was observed in the placebo group （P 〉 0.05）. Erectile function and overall satisfaction scores after medication were significantly higher in the TMGE group than in the placebo group （P 〈 0.05）. Erectile function of patients in the TMGE-treated group significantly improved, suggesting that TMGE could be utilized for improving erectile function in male patients.

Withania sominifera （Indian ginseng） was transformed by Agrobacterium rhizogenes. Explants from seedling roots, stems, hypocotyls, cotyledonary nodal segments, cotyledons and young leaves were inoculated with A. rhizogenes strain R1601. Hairy （transformed） roots were induced from cotyledons and leaf explants. The transgenic status of hairy roots was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction using nptll and rolB specific primers and, subsequently, by Southern analysis for the presence of nptll and rolB genes in the genomes of transformed roots. Four clones of hairy roots were established; these differed in their morphology. The doubling time of faster growing cultures was 8-14 d with a fivefold increase in biomass after 28 d compared with cultured, non-transformed seedling roots. MS-based liquid medium was superior for the growth of transformed roots compared with other culture media evaluated （SH, LS and N6）, with MS-based medium supplemented with 40 g/L sucrose being optimal for biomass production. Cultured hairy roots synthesized withanolide A, a steroidal lactone of medicinal and therapeutic value. The concentration of withanolide A in transformed roots （157.4 μg/g dry weight） was 2.7-fold more than in non-transformed cultured roots （57.9 μg/g dry weight）.

目的探讨柴胡愈伤组织生长和其不定根诱导的适宜培养条件。方法以无菌苗为外植体诱导获得愈伤组织后,对不同种类和不同质量浓度的生长素进行实验,并对光和温度对柴胡愈伤组织生长和其不定根诱导的影响进行了研究。结果柴胡的愈伤组织适宜于在MS+NAA4mg/L+KT0.2mg/L培养基或MS+NAA2mg/L+KT0.2mg/L培养基上继代培养。诱导其不定根时宜采用的培养基为MS+IBA2mg/L+KT0.2mg/L。25℃条件下,黑暗培养既有利于柴胡愈伤组织的生长又有利于其不定根的诱导。结论比较适宜于柴胡愈伤组织生长的生长素为NAA,而有利于不定根诱导的生长素为IBA。温度对愈伤组织的生长影响非常明显,光照是其发根的限制因素。

Global-Local Finite Element Analysis for Predicting Separation in Cord-Rubber Composites of Radial Truck Tires

A global-local finite element modeling technique is employed in this paper to predict the separation in steel cord-rubber composite materials of radial truck tires. The local model uses a finite element analysis in conjunction with a glob-al-local technique in ABAQUS. A 3-dimensional finite element local model calculates the maximum cyclic shear strain of an interface between steel cord and rubber materials at the carcass ply shoulder region. It is found that the maximum cyclic shear strain is reliable as a result of the analysis of carcass ply separation in radial truck tires. Using the analysis of the local model, a study of the cyclic shear strain is performed in the shoulder region and used to deter-mine the carcass ply separation. The effect of the change of carcass ply design on the separation in steel cord-rubber composite materials of radial truck tires is discussed.
