Bubble and Heat Transfer Phenomena in Viscous Slurry Bubble Column

Heat transfer and bubble phenomena were investigated by adopting the drift flux model in a viscous slurry bubble column reactor (SBCR), having a diameter of 0.0508 m(ID) and height 1.5 m. The effects of superficial gas velocity (0.002 -0.164 m/s), solid concentration (0 - 20 wt%) and liquid viscosity (paraffin oil;16.9 mPa•s and squalane;25.9 mPa•s) on the gas holdup and heat transfer characteristics were examined. It was observed that the gas holdup increased with increasing superficial gas velocity (UG), but decreased with increasing solid concentration (SC) or slurry viscosity. The degree of non-uniformity in a SBCR could be determined by the modified drift flux model at the heterogeneous flow regime. The local heat transfer coefficient (h) between the immersed heater and the bed decreased with increasing liquid viscosity and SC, but it increased with increasing UG. The modified Nusselt number including the gas holdup and local heat transfer coefficient was well correlated in terms of dimensionless groups such as Reynolds and Prandtl numbers.

Abdominal obesity describes the accumulation of excessive fat in the abdomen. It is known that depending on its distribution, visceral obesity presents a greater danger to health than subcutaneous obesity. To properly prevent and treat visceral obesity, accurate evaluation methods are necessary, and hence quantitative VAT estimation is extremely important. CT scans are the most accurate method for estimating VAT, but it requires a great deal of time and effort, limiting its use in studying or evaluating obesity in patients. This paper proposed automatic measurement software that could quickly differentiate between and measure VAT and SAT. The method was verified using a total of 100 abdominal CT data values;this paper measured the SAT and VAT in the entire abdomen using the automatic measurement software. Additionally, through a comparative evaluation between the automated measurements and manual measurements such as BMI and waist circumference, clinical reliability and viability were validated and evaluated. Between automated measurements and manual measurements, the TAT (r = 0.995, p = 0.01), SAT (r = 0.987, p = 0.01) and VAT (r = 0.993, p = 0.01) showed high correlation. Using BMI as the main metric, the TAT for automated measurements (r = 0.674, p = 0.01) and the TAT for manual measurements (r = 0.703, p = 0.01) showed the strongest correlation. When using waist circumference, the VAT for automated measurements (r = 0.826, p = 0.01) and the VAT for manual measurements (r = 0.822, p = 0.01) showed the strongest correlation. With these results, the reliability and viability of the automatic measurement software were confirmed. The software is expected to help greatly in reducing the time and in providing objective data of VAT measurements from CT scans for clinical research.

In spite of the low temperature during the winter season and the high land environment, the wetland treatment system is gaining popularity in Korea because of its lower construction cost and simplicity in operation and maintenance. Many different types of wetland treatment systems have been built during the last 10 years, among which the free water surface wetland has been predominant. Most of the large-scale systems are government projects for improving the water quality of the streams flowing into the estuary dikes and reservoirs. The covering plants used in this system are different in different areas but cattails and reeds or their combinations are common. Constructed wetlands in Korea can be characterized by their shallow depths and short hydraulic residence times. There is no established flow pattern and configuration rules for constructing wetlands, but many efforts have been made with a view to improving their ecological function. Flow control is the most difficult problem in designing a riverbed or riparian wetland. There have been scores of flow rate control devices developed for wetlands, but none of them guarantee wetlands’ safety against flooding. In earlier wetland construction, the building materials were mainly soil. Recently, strong and durable building materials such as rocks, gravel beds, concrete and steel are used at vulnerable places to protect them from erosion. Our investigation indicated that the wetland system would be an appropriate technology because it is not only cheaper to construct, but also requires less maintenance work. However, we suffer from the reduced effectiveness in performance during the winter. We need to evaluate the partial treatment accomplished during 6 to 7 months per year.

Characteristics of and Control over Resonance in the Electromotive Force of Electromagnetic Induction

The principles of electromagnetic induction are applied in many devices and systems, including induction cookers, transformers and wireless energy transfer;however, few data are available on resonance in the electromotive force (EMF) of electromagnetic induction. We studied electromagnetic induction between two circular coils of wire: one is the source coil and the other is the pickup (or induction) coil. The measured EMF versus frequency graphs reveals the existence of a resonance/anti-resonance in the EMF of electromagnetic induction through free space. We found that it is possible to control the system’s resonance and anti-resonance frequencies. In some devices, a desired resonance or antiresonance frequency is achieved by varying the size of the resonator. Here, by contrast, our experimental results show that the system’s resonance and anti-resonance frequencies can be adjusted by varying the distance between the two coils or the number of turns of the induction coil.

In addition, the effects of the four components of HHT, that is, Gardeniae Fructus(GF), Scutellariae Radix(SR), Coptidis Rhizoma(CR), and Phellodendri Cortex(PC), on gi motility were also *** In normal ICR mice, ITR% and GE values were significantly and dose-dependently increased by the intragastric administration of HHTE(0.1-1 g/kg). The ITR% values of GMD mice were significantly lower than those of normal mice, and these reductions were significantly and dose-dependently inhibited by HHTE(0.1-1 g/kg). Additionally, GF, CR, and PC dosedependently increased ITR% and GE values in normal and GMD *** These results suggest that HHT is a novel candidate for the development of a gastroprokinetic agent for the gi tract.

Functional Analysis for Rolling Leaf of Somaclonal Mutants in Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

This study was carried out to facilitate the functional analysis of rice genes. Some 297 insertion plants (1.7%) of the entire lines with the endogenous retrotransposon Tos17 were produced. Phenotypes of these plants in the S2 genera-tion were observed in the field according to different leaf types. Rolling leaf mutants showed thinner sclerenchyma-tous cells, defective arrangement of vascular bundles, and well-formed bulliform cells as compared to the parental cultivar. Two new copies of Tos17 were detected in the rolling leaf type. In the new leaf type, the copy number and activation of Tos12, 15 did not appear as ‘Ilpum’. Flanking sequence tag (FST) analysis of Tos17 in the rolling leaf mutant indicated that new copies of Tos17 were transposed on chromosomes 11 and 12. Annotated homologues of the tagging genes on chromosome 11 were arabinoxylan rabinofuranohydrolase isoenzyme AXAH-I and II. The tagging gene in chromosome 12 was highly correlated with 6 kinds of genes including a transcript regulated factor and a rough sheath 2-like protein. This rolling leaf and flanking sequence data will stimulate the functional analysis of rice genes.

This study presents the development of an ultrasonic transducer with a radius horn for an ultrasonic milling spindle(UMS)*** ultrasonic transducer was intended to have a working frequency of approximately 30 *** different materials were considered in the study:stainless steel(SS 316L)and titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V).Titanium alloy gave a higher resonance frequency(33 kHz)than stainless steel(30 kHz)under the same preload compression *** electromechanical impedance simulation was carried out to predict the impedance resonance frequency for both materials,and the effect of the overhanging toolbar was *** to the electromechanical impedance simulation,the overhanging toolbar length affected the resonance frequency,and the error was less than 3%.Harmonic analysis confirmed that the damping ratio helps determine the resonance ***,damping ratios of 0.015-0.020 and 0.005-0.020 were selected for stainless steel and titanium alloy,respectively,with an error of less than 1.5%.Experimental machining was also performed to assess the feasibility of ultrasonic-assisted milling;the result was a lesser cutting force and better surface topography of Al 6061.

AIM： Interstitial cells of Cajal （ICCs） are the pacemaker cells that generate slow waves in the gastrointestinal （gi） tract. We have aimed to investigate the involvement of mitochondrial Na^＋-Ca^2＋ exchange in intestinal pacemaking activity in cultured interstitial cells of Cajal. METHODS： Enzymatic digestions were used to dissociate ICCs from the small intestine of a mouse. The whole-cell patch-clamp configuration was used to record membrane currents （voltage clamp） and potentials （current clamp） from cultured ICCs. RESULTS： Clonazepam and CGP37157 inhibited the pacemaking activity of ICCs in a dose-dependent manner. Clonazepam from 20 to 60 μmol/L and CGP37157 from 10 to 30 μmol/L effectively inhibited Ca^2＋ efflux from mitochondria in pacemaking activity of ICCs. The ICsos of clonazepam and CGP37157 were 37.1 and 18.2 μmol/ L, respectively. The addition of 20 μmol/L NiCl2 to the internal solution caused a ＂wax and wane＂ phenomenon of pacemaking activity of ICCs. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that mitochondria Na^＋-Ca^2＋ exchange has an important role in intestina pacemaking activity.
