Predicting Ailanthus altissima presence across a managed forest landscape in southeast Ohio

Background: The negative impacts of the exotic tree, Ailanthus altissima(tree-of-heaven, stink tree), is spreading throughout much of the Eastern United states. When forests are disturbed, it can invade and expand quickly if seed sources are ***: We conducted studies at the highly dissected Tar Hollow state Forest(THsF) in southeastern Ohio UsA,where Ailanthus is widely distributed within the forest, harvests have been ongoing for decades, and prescribed fire had been applied to about a quarter of the study area. Our intention was to develop models to evaluate the relationship of Ailanthus presence to prescribed fire, harvesting activity, and other landscape characteristics, using this Ohio location as a case study. Field assessments of the demography of Ailanthus and other stand attributes(e.g., fire, harvesting, stand structure) were conducted on 267 sample plots on a 400-m grid throughout THsF,supplemented by identification of Ailanthus seed-sources via digital aerial sketch mapping during the dormant season. statistical modeling tools Random Forest(RF), Classification and Regression Trees(CART), and Maxent were used to assess relationships among attributes, then model habitats suitable for Ailanthus ***: In all, 41 variables were considered in the models, including variables related to management activities, soil characteristics, topography, and vegetation structure(derived from LiDAR). The most important predictor of Ailanthus presence was some measure of recent timber harvest, either mapped harvest history(CART) or LiDARderived canopy height(Maxent). Aim:Thynidine phosphorylase(TP)acts as a proangiogenic growth factor which may regulate mammalian Target of Rapamycin(mTOR).We investigated whether the TP substrate thymidine and overexpression of TP affected mTOR signaling by comparing Colo320(TP deficient)cells and its TP-transfected variant(Colo320TP1).Methods:Drug resistance was assessed with the sulforhodamine B assay,protein expression with Western blotting,cell cycle distribution and cell death with Fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis,and autophagy with ***:Colo320 and Colo320TP1 cells had comparable levels of sensitivity to the mTOR inhibitor *** treatment led to 13-and 50-fold resistance to rapamycin in Colo320 and Colo320TP1 cells,*** Colo320TP1 cells,the thymidine phosphorylase inhibitor(TPI)reversed the thymidine induced resistance to rapamycin,but not in Colo320 cells,indicating a role for TP in the *** increased p70/s6k-phosphorylation(downstream of mTOR)in Colo320TP1,but it was not affected in *** a mechanism behind resistance,we studied the levels of autophagy and found that,in Colo320TP1 cells,autophagy was highly induced by thymidine-rapamycin,which was decreased by *** addition,the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyl-adenine completely inhibited autophagy and its ***:Rapamycin resistance in TP-expressing cancer cells may therefore be related to thymidine-mediated autophagy activation.

The conservation behavior framework is useful to identify key linkages between behavior and conservation practice. We apply this framework to a novel host-parasite system on the Galapagos Islands and ask if there have been changes in parasite oviposition behavior and host mortality patterns across the first decade （2004-2013） of its known association. The Dipteran parasite Philornis downsi was first discovered in Darwin＇s finch nests in 1997 and is the biggest threat to the survival of Galapagos land birds. Host mortality has increased over the past decade. In Dipterans, pupation and pupae size are determined by access to host resources. Here, we test the hypothesis that P downsi flies are laying eggs in finch nests earlier in the nestling phase to maximize larval feeding time and therefore chance of pupation success before host death. The results show fewer 1st instar larvae later in the host nesting cycle in support of earlier egg laying behavior by female flies. Between 2004 and 2013, parasite intensity increased from -28 to -48 parasites per nest, host mortality increased from -50% to -90%, and host age at death decreased from -11 to -5 days. The earlier age at host death was correlated with fewer pupae （from -50% to -20%） and smaller pupae size （-10% decrease）. Changes in parasite behavior reveal new fitness costs to both the parasite and Darwin＇s finches. These findings un- derscore the need for urgent conservation action to save Darwin＇s finches from extinction due to a novel, lethal and introduced parasite [Current Zoology 60 （4）： 542-550, 2014].

This essay offers a philosophical perspective that, in breaking with both the open and surreptitious dialectical method still so prominent in academic discourse, follows Heidegger in trying to conceive of a radically non-dialectical manner of approaching affirmation, negation, and neutrality. As with Heidegger, this is attempted through a turn towards art and the ＂emancipated contingency＂ that characterizes much creative production. In contrast to action and production within the knowledge economy, the creation of the artwork concerns a knowing of unknowingness （described by Maurice Blanchot as the neutral） that demands a rethink of action in relation to truth and errancy. Indeed, the very working of the work of art is conceived here as a truth that is precisely ＂set to work＂（Heidegger） by errancy. Through a consideration of the essential difference between choice and decision and the different ＂beginning＂ of art that this suggests, the essay concludes with some reflections of the theme of art＇s fascination and the and the affirmation of the unknown.

A 64-year-old-female presented with progressive left foot weakness, low back and radicular pain after a left sided s1 transforaminal epidural steroid injection(EsI). Magnetic resonance imaging revealed left side L5-s1 large extradural heterogeneous mass with layering areas suggesting different stages of hematoma formation. Past medical history was significant for peripheral vascular disease and transient ischemic attacks, for which she took aspirin and clopidogrel(antiplatelet agent). These medications were discontinued one week prior to EsI. Although synovial cysts associated with facet arthropathy are common, hemorrhagic cyst is not. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of symptomatic hemorrhagic lumbar facet synovial cyst following EsI on a patient taking antiplatelet medications.
