Recent developments in novel silica-based optical fibers

We have summarized our recent work in the area of novel silica-based optical fibers, which can be classified into two types: silica optical fiber doped with special elements including Bi, Al, and Ce, and micro-structured multi-core fibers. For element-doped optical fiber, the Bi/Al co-doped silica fibers could exhibit a fluorescence spectrum covering the wavelength range between 1000 and 1400 nm with a full width at half maximum(FWHM) of about 150 nm, which enables its use in fiber amplifiers and laser systems. The Ce-doped fiber's center wavelengths of excitation and emission are about 340 and 430 nm, respectively. The sapphire-derived fiber(SDF) with high alumina dopant concentration in the core can form mullite through heating and cooling with arc-discharge treatment. This SDF can be further developed for an intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric that can withstand 1200 ℃, which allows it to be used in high-temperature sensing applications. Owing to the strong evanescent field, microstructured multi-core fiber can be used in a wide range of applications in biological fiber optic sensing, chemical measurement, and interference-related devices. Coaxial-core optical fiber is another novel kind of silica-based optical fiber that has two coaxial waveguide cores and can be used for optical trapping and micro-particle manipulation by generating a highly focused conical optical field. The recent developments of these novel fibers are discussed.

Modeling of bistatic scattering from an underwater non-penetrable target using a Kirchhoff approximation method

The clinical scenario of pediatric liver disease is becoming more intricate due to changes in the disease spectrum,in which an increasing number of inherited/metabolic liver diseases are reported,while infectious diseases show a decreasing *** similar clinical manifestations caused by inherited/metabolic diseases might be under-recognized or misdiagnosed due to nonspecific characteristics.A delayed visit to a doctor due to a lack of symptoms or mild symptoms at an early stage will result in late diagnosis and ***,limited diagnostic approaches,especially liver biopsy,are not easily accepted by pediatric patients,leading to challenges in etiological *** dysfunction due to inherited/metabolic diseases is often caused by a variety of metabolites,so precision treatment is difficult;symptomatic treatment is a compelling option for inherited disorders.

Genetic diversity and temporal changes of an endemic cyprinid fish species, Ancherythroculter nigrocauda,from the upper reaches of Yangtze River

Small populations with low genetic diversity are prone to extinction. Knowledge on the genetic diversity and structure of small populations and their genetic response to anthropogenic effects are of critical importance for conservation management. In this study, samples of Ancherythroculter nigrocauda, an endemic cyprinid fish from the upper reaches of Yangtze River, were collected from five sites to analyze their genetic diversity and population structure using mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and 14 microsatellite loci. Haplotype diversity, nucleotide diversity, and expected heterozygosity indicated that the A. nigrocauda populations had low genetic diversity, and decreased heavily from 2001 to 2016. Significant genetic differentiation was found among different populations in the cyt b gene and SSR markers based on the genetic differentiation index (F ST), whereas no differentiation was found in 2001. Haplotype genealogy showed that eight out of 15 haplotypes were private to one population. The SSR STRUCTURE analysis showed that there were four genetic clusters in the A. nigrocauda samples, with each population forming a single cluster, except for the Chishui River (CSR) and Mudong River (MDR) populations, which formed a common cluster. Therefore, loss of genetic diversity and increased genetic differentiation were found in the A. nigrocauda populations, which could be attributed to dam construction, overfishing, and water pollution in the upper Yangtze River. It is therefore recommended that the government should ban fishing, control water pollution, increase river connectivity, and establish artificial breeding and stocking.

Effects of rainfall intensity and topography on rill development and rill characteristics on loessial hillslopes in China

Rill development is a major soil erosion process that causes severe soil *** study examined the effects of representative rainfall intensities(50 and 75 mm h-1),slope gradients(10°and 150),and slope lengths(7.5 and 10.0 m)on rill development and rill characteristics on loessial hillslopes in *** soil was collected from the cropland of Ansai Town,Yan’an City,Shaanxi *** soil with 28.3%sand,58.1%silt,and13.6%clay was packed into a soil pan to conduct rainfall simulations in *** results showed that the time of the knickpoint occurrence(5-16 min),the rill headcut extension(9-33 min),and the mean headward erosion rate(1.7-5.o cm min-1)were better representative indicators for reflecting the changes in the rill development than other indicators used in this *** a quick evaluation of the rill erosion severity,the rill coverage ratio(1%-12%,generallyincreasing with an increase in the rainfall intensity)was better than the other indicators for treatments with different rainfall intensities,and the rill width-depth ratio(1.56-2.27,generally decreasing with an increase in the slope gradient)was better than the other indicators for treatments with different slope ***,the rill inclination angle(8.2°-19.1°,significantly increasing with an increase in the slope length)and rill density(0.19-1.34 m·m-2,generally increasing with an increase in the slope length)were more suitable for evaluating the rill erosion severity on hillslopes with different slope ***,the representative indicators could reflect the differences in the rill development and rill characteristics under different rainfall and topographic *** study greatly improved the evaluation of rill erosion severity and the prediction of the development of rills for loessial hillslopes.

Spoken dialog summarization system with HAPPINESS/SUFFERING factor recognition

This work presents a spoken dialog summariza- tion system with HAPPINESS/SUFFERING factor recognition. The semantic content is compressed and classified by factor categories from spoken dialog. The transcription of au- tomatic speech recognition is then processed through Chinese Knowledge and Information Processing segmentation system. The proposed system also adopts the part-of-speech tags to effectively select and rank the keywords. Finally, the HAPPINESS/SUFFERING factor recognition is done by the proposed point-wise mutual information. Compared with the original method, the performance is improved by applying the significant scores of keywords. The experimental results show that the average precision rate for factor recognition in outside test can reach 73.5% which demonstrates the possi- bility and potential of the proposed system.

Identification of the ryanodine receptor mutation I4743M and its contribution to diamide insecticide resistance in Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Insect ryanodine receptors(RyRs)are the targets of diamide *** point mutations G4946E and I4790M(numbering according to Plutella xylostella,PxRyR)in the transmembrane domain of the insect RyRs associated with diamide resistance have so far been identified in three lepidopteran pests,***,Tuta absoluta and Chilo *** this study,we identified one of the known RyR target site resistance mutations(I4790M)in a field-collected population of Spodoptera *** field-collected WF population of *** exhibited 154 fold resistance to chlorantraniliprole when compared with the susceptible WH-S *** the transmembrane domains of *** RyR(SeRyR)revealed that the resistant WF strain was homozygous for the 14743M mutation(corresponding to I4790M in PxRyR),whereas the G4900E allele(corresponding to G4946E of PxRyR)was not *** 4743M allele was introgressed into the susceptible WH-S strain by crossing WF with WH-S,followed by three rounds of backcrossing with *** introgressed strain 4743M was homozygous for the mutant 4743M allele and shared about 94%of its genetic background with that of the recipient WH-S *** with WH-S,the near-isogenic 4743M strain showed moderate levels of resistance to chlorantraniliprole(21 fold),cyantraniliprole(25 fold)and flubendiamide(22 fold),suggesting that the I4743M mutation confers medium levels of resistance to all three *** analysis showed diamide resistance in the 4743M strain was inherited as an autosomal and recessive *** from this study have direct implications for the design of appropriate resistance monitoring and management practices to sustainably control ***.

Development,Characterization and Application of a Three-Layer Intelligent pH-Sensing Indicator Based on Bromocresol Green(BCG)for Monitoring Fish Freshness

As a novel food quality monitoring technology,intelligent freshness indicator has received wide attention in recent ***,its poor safety and stability are the main problems hindering its practical *** a new pH-sensing indicator based on bromocresol green(BCG)was developed in this study for nondestructive and real-time monitoring the freshness of marine *** indicator was designed with a three-layer structure,using the polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)membrane with high hydrophobicity and air permeability as the inner layer to isolate the moisture in the package,BCG-coated filter paper as the colorchanging layer to indicate the freshness of fish,and a transparent unidirectional permeable(TUP)membrane with moisture resistance as the out layer to isolate the moisture in the *** contributed to weaken the influence of humidity and prevent dye migration,so as to improve the accuracy and safety of the ***,a highly sensitive and distinguished color variation response to trimethylamine(TMA)standard solution with different concentrations was observed on the ***,the indicator showed a high color stability at different storage temperatures up to 14 days with total color differences(ΔE)less than *** indicator presented visible color variations from yellow to green then eventually to blue when applied to monitor the freshness of sea bass and salmon stored at 4℃,implying that fish was ***,indicatorsΔE value was significantly positively correlated with total volatile basic nitrogen(TVB-N)and total viable count(TVC)in sea bass and salmon ***,the pH-sensing indicator can be applied as a cost-effective and promising intelligent indicator for monitoring fish freshness.

Carbon fiber confined mixed Ni-based crystal phases with interfacial charge redistribution induced by high bond polarity for electrochemical urea-assisted hydrogen generation

Interfacial electronic structure modulation of nickel-based electrocata-lysts is significant in boosting energy-conversion-relevant urea oxidation reaction(UOR).Herein,porous carbon nanofibers confined mixed Ni-based crystal phases of Ni_(2)P and NiF_(2) are developed via fluorination and phosphorization of Ni coated carbon nanofiber(Ni_(2)P/NiF_(2)/PCNF),which possess sufficient mesoporous and optimized Gibbs adsorption free energy by mixed phase-induced charge *** novel system further reduces the reaction energy barrier and improves the reaction activity by addressing the challenges of low intrinsic activity,difficulty in active site formation,and insufficient synergism.A considerably high current density of 254.29 mA cm^(-2) is reached at 1.54 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode on a glass carbon electrode,and the cell voltage requires 1.39 V to get 10 mA cm^(-2) in hydrogen generation,with very good stability,about 190 mV less than that of the traditional water *** facile active phase formation and high charge transfer ability induced by asymmetric charge redistribution are found in the interface,where the urea molecules tend to bond with Ni atoms on the surface of heterojunction,and the rate-determining step is changed from CO_(2) desorption to the fourth H-atom *** work reveals a novel catalyst system by interfacial charge redistribution induced by high bond polarity for energy-relevant catalysis reactions.
