AIM To clarify the quality of the studies indicating lesion size and/or containment as prognostic indicators of bone marrow stimulation(BMS) for osteochondral lesions of the talus(OLT). METHODS Two reviewers searched the Pub Med/MEDLINE and EMBASE databases using specific terms on March 2015 in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Predetermined variables were extracted for all the included studies. Level of evidence(LOE) was determined using previously published criteria by the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and methodological quality of evidence (MQOE) was evaluated using the Modified Coleman Methodology Score. RESULTS This review included 22 studies. Overall, 21 of the 22(95.5%) included studies were level Ⅳ or level Ⅲ evidences. The remaining study was a level Ⅱ evidence. MQOE analysis revealed 14 of the 22(63.6%) included studies having fair quality, 7(31.8%) studies having poor quality and only 1 study having excellent quality. CONCLUSION The evidence supporting the use of lesion size and containment as prognostic indicators of BMS for OLTs has been shown to be of low quality.

Prospective real-time evaluation of diagnostic performance using endocytoscopy in differentiating neoplasia from nonneoplasia for colorectal diminutive polyps(≤ 5 mm)

AIM To clarify the diagnostic performance of endocytoscopy for differentiation between neoplastic and nonneoplastic colorectal diminutive *** Patients who underwent endocytoscopy between October and December 2016 at Sano Hospital were prospectively recruited. When diminutive polyps(≤5 mm) were detected, the lesions were evaluated by endocytoscopy after being stained with 0.05% crystal violet and 1% methylene blue. The diminutivepolyps were classified into five categories(EC 1 a, 1 b, 2, 3 a, and 3 b). Endoscopists were asked to take a biopsy from any lesion diagnosed as EC1 b(indicator of hyperplastic polyp) or EC2(indicator of adenoma). We have assessed the diagnostic performance of endocytoscopy for EC2 and EC1 b lesions by comparison with the histopathology of the biopsy specimen. RESULTS A total of 39 patients with 63 diminutive polyps were analyzed. All polyps were evaluated by endocytoscopy. The mean polyp size was 3.3 ± 0.9 mm. Among the 63 diminutive polyps, 60 were flat and 3 were pedunculated. The mean time required for EC observation, including the time for staining with crystal violet and methylene blue, was 3.0 ± 1.9 min. Histopathologic evaluation showed that 13 polyps were hyperplastic and 50 were adenomas. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of EC2 for adenoma compared with EC1 b for hyperplastic polyp were 98.0%, 92.3%, 96.8%, 98.0% and 92.3%, respectively. There were only two cases of disagreement between the endoscopic diagnosis made by endocytoscopy and the corresponding histopathological *** Endocytoscopy showed a high diagnostic performance for differentiating between neoplastic and non-neoplastic colorectal diminutive polyps, and therefore has the potential to be used for "real-time histopathology".

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is known to cause gastrointestinal *** studies have revealed COVID-19-attributed acute pancreatitis(AP).However,clinical characteristics of COVID-19-attributed AP remain *** performed a narrative review to elucidate relation between COVID-19 and AP using the PubMed *** basic and pathological reports revealed expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine 2,key proteins that aid in the entry of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)into the *** experimental and pathological evaluation suggested that SARS-CoV-2 infects human endocrine and exocrine pancreas cells,and thus,SARS-CoV-2 may have a direct involvement in pancreatic ***,systemic inflammation,especially in children,may cause *** of immune mediators associated with AP,including interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-10,interferon-γ,monocyte chemotactic protein 1,and tumor necrosis factor-αare higher in the plasma of patients with COVID-19,that suggests an indirect involvement of the *** real-world settings,some clinical features of AP complicate COVID-19,such as a high complication rate of pancreatic necrosis,severe AP,and high ***,clinical features of COVID-19-attributed AP remain uncertain due to insufficient research on etiologies of ***,high-quality clinical studies and case reports that specify methods for differential diagnoses of other etiologies of AP are needed.

Lack of appropriate agronomic practices is one of the major causes for soil erosion and low yields in teff(Eragrostis tef[Zucc.])production in Ethiopia.A 3-yr study was conducted at the Aba Gerima watershed in northwestern Ethiopia,to investigate the effects of two tillage practices(reduced tillage[RT]and conventional tillage[CT]),two planting methods(row planting[RP]and broadcast planting[BP]),and two compaction options(with[+T]and without[-T]trampling)on soil loss and teff yields in a split-split plot *** concentration ranged from 0.01 to 5.37 g L^(-1)(mean,0.25 g L^(-1))in our ***,the estimated total(August-October)soil loss ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 t ha^(-1)(mean,0.3 t ha^(-1)).The sediment concentration and total soil loss were significantly influenced(P<0.05)by tillage,planting methods,and trampling only in the third monitoring *** reduced soil loss by 19% relative to that of CT,whereas RP resulted in a 13%reduction in soil loss over ***-T plots showed a 15%reduction in soil loss as compared to+T *** revealed significant increase in soil total carbon and nitrogen in RT *** soil loss and greater teff grain yield were obtained in plots with improved agronomic practices(RT and RP)compared to conventional ones(CT and BP).Based on our findings we conclude that the use of RT,RP,and-T practices can effectively minimize soil loss without any crop yield penalty.

Dynamic Molecular Behavior and Cluster Structure of Octanoic Acid in Its Liquid and CCl<sub>4</sub>Solution

Fatty acids such as oleic and stearic acids having a long hydrocarbon chain are known to exist as dimers in their melt and even in a non-polar solvent. In their melt the dimers arrange longitudinally and alternately to form clusters which resemble a smectic liquid crystal. The clusters determine the liquid properties of the fatty acids such as density, viscosity and fluidity. Then, do the dimers of fatty acid having a moderate-length hydrocarbon chain construct such the clusters? In the present study the dynamic molecular behavior and assembly structure of octanoic acid in its melt and also in CCl4 solution have been investigated by the X-ray diffraction, near infrared spectroscopy, 1H-NMR chemical shift, self-diffusion coefficient and 13C-NMR spin-lattice relaxation time measurements. From these results it has been revealed that the clusters of octanoic acid exist in its melt and also in CCl4 and that the clusters in the melt disintegrate with an increase in temperature. The dissociation profile of dimers of octanoic acid into monomers in CCl4 also has been clarified.

Improvement in Surface Roughness and Hardness for Carbon Steel by Slide Burnishing Process

Slide burnishing process, which is a surface severe plastic deformation technique, offers an attractive post-machining alternative due to its chip-less and relatively simple operations. The purpose of the present work is to investigate effects of initial turned surface roughness on the burnished surface roughness and hardness in slide burnishing. The carbon steel samples those have different roughness surfaces being treated were prepared by turning by varying the feed. Slide burnishing was then carried out by a silicon nitride ceramic ball that was loaded and fed on the turned surface of a rotating specimen using a lathe machine. It was found that the turned surfaces were smoothed drastically by the burnishing process, and that the Ra and Rz values were reduced at most by a factor of 52 and 21, respectively. However, the smoothing effect of burnishing has limit, and the limited maximum height roughness (Rz*) for burnishing smoothing increased under a higher burnishing force and with a larger ball diameter. When the Rz values of initial turned surfaces were less than the Rz*, the roughness of the burnished surfaces did not depend on the roughness of the initial turned surface and the burnishing force. There was no significant difference in the burnished microstructure and hardness under a specific burnishing force among the initial turned surface roughness, while a higher burnishing force caused a greater increase in surface hardness.

Wetting is one of the omnipresent phenomena governed via natural laws. Moreover, surface wettability at non-ambient temperature especially at high temperature (30°C to 90°C) is of great importance in many industrial processes. In this study, Si wafers with various structures were fabricated to investigate wettability at different temperatures. Three shapes with micro-pillar structured surfaces were designed and fabricated. Pillar-structured surfaces were fabricated by photolithography and ICP etching. The temperature-dependent wettability of single-phase regime droplets was characterized using contact angle measurements. The wetting behavior of a water droplet was observed.

Lon protease, an ATP-dependent protease in Escherichia coli, degrades abnormal proteins and regulates several important cellular functions. Here we show novel inhibitory effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on Lon protease activities. LPS inhibited the peptidase, protease, and ATPase activities of Lon;and a dose-response study showed that LPS at low doses more effectively inhibited the ATPase activity than the peptidase one, suggesting different susceptibility to LPS of these activities associated with Lon. Structure-activity relationship studies revealed that ReLPS, detoxified LPS, and mono-phosphoryl as well as diphosphoryl lipid A, also showed similar inhibition, suggesting that neither O-antigen polysaccharide nor O-acyl chain, but rather phosphate groups in the lipid A domain, seem to have been responsible for the inhibitory effects. Besides, LPS was co-precipitated with Lon by an anti-Lon antibody, showing the direct binding of LPS to Lon. These results suggest that LPS bound to Lon and inhibited the protease activity of Lon by inhibiting its ATPase activity. These results also seem to be another example of a negatively charged phosphate group in membrane components of Escherichia coli being involved in the regulation of protease activity of Lon through binding to Lon and inhibiting its ATPase activity, as in the case of cardiolipin.
