Is the Cape Stone Forest in Shantou City formed by wave erosion? A comparison of the pedestal rocks on the coasts and the mountains of Queshi in eastern Guangdong, China

Cape Stone Forest is a group of granite rock pillars(pedestal rocks) towering over Shilin Lake, on the southern shore of Shantou Bay in eastern Guangdong, China. The rock pillars were previously identified as sea stacks because they have marine notch-like concave sidewalls at their base, and more importantly, the lake is immediately adjacent to the bay, which is exposed to the open sea. However, rock pillars similar in shape and size can also be found at the top of Queshi Mountain, which is only about 300 meters northwest of the lake and about 85 meters above sea level. Therefore, the marine origin of Cape Stone Forest is seriously questioned. In this study, 3D imagery and drone technology were used to collect data in the investigations without direct manual measurements in the water or on the mountain. It shows that the concave sidewalls of the rock pillars in the lake and on the mountains occur at different heights and are exposed to different directions, while a natural sea stack on Mayu Island at the mouth of Shantou Bay has a horizontal notch parallel to the sea level, although the granite rock of the sea stack is the same as that of the lake and the mountains. The eastern side of the island, where the sea stack is located, is exposed to the open sea but blocks large waves for the rock pillars in the lake. Therefore, the origin of Cape Stone Forest cannot be explained by wave-based mechanisms. The only satisfactory explanation that takes into account all the field evidence is that the narrow rock pillars of the lake and mountain were formed by chemical weathering that penetrated closely the spaced joints of the granite rock, and the notch-like concave sidewalls were formed by more effective chemical weathering at the base of the pillars.

Dynamic Measurement of Intracellular pH Based on Bioluminescent Bacteria

Intracellular pH(pHi)is a fundamental indicator of cellular physiological state,regulating cellular state and function,and has important research values.Although various probes for measuring intracellular pH were available,it is challenging to reflect pHi in real-time and reversible manners.Herein,we developed a whole-cell bioluminescent(BL)probe based on wild type BL bacteria,photobacterium phosphoreum(P.phosphoreum),to determine and image pHi.The dependence of BL intensity of P.phosphoreum on pH values of culture solutions was established.It was found that BL intensity could respond to the change of pH values rapidly and reversibly.We further revealed that P.phosphoreum maintained pH homeostasis in the extracellular pH(pHe)within the range of 5.0–7.0,while intracellular pH homeostasis was destroyed at the alkaline pHe.This method opens up the enormous potential of BL bacteria as an alternative to fluorescence for monitoring and imaging pHi.

Modeling Near-Field Impulsive Waves Generated by Deformable Landslide Using the HBP Model Based on the SPH Method

Landslide-generated impulsive waves(LGWs)in reservoir areas can seriously threaten waterway safety as well as hu-man life and properties around the two side slopes.The risk reduction and mitigation of such a hazard require the accurate prediction of near-field wave characteristics,such as wave amplitude and run-up.However,near-field LGW involves complicated fluid-solid interactions.Furthermore,the wave characteristics are closely related to various aspects,including the geometry and physical features of the slide,river,and body of water.However,the empirical or analytical methods used for rough estimation cannot derive accurate results,especially for deformable landslides,due to their significant geometry changes during the sliding process.In this study,the near-field waves generated by deformable landslides were simulated by smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH)based on multi-phase flow.The deformable landslides were generalized as a kind of viscous flow by adopting the Herschel-Bulkley-Papanastasiou(HBP)-based nonNewtonian rheology model.The HBP model is capable of producing deformable landslide dynamics even though the high-speed sliding process is involved.In this study,an idealized experiment case originating from Lituya LGW and a practical case of Gongjiafang LGW were reproduced for verification and demonstration.The simulation results of both cases show satisfactory consistency with the experiment/investigation data in terms of landslide movement and near-field impulsive wave characteristics,thus indicating the applicability and accuracy of the proposed method.Finally,the effects of the HBP model’s rheological parameters on the landslide dynamics and near-field wave characteristics are discussed,providing a parameter calibration method along with sug-gestions for further applications.

Numerical Analysis of Heat Transfer Characteristics to Supercritical CO_(2) in a Vertical Mini-Channel:Transition and Pseudo-Boiling

Large eddy simulations have been conducted to study upward transitional flows and heat transfer characteristics of supercritical CO_(2) in a vertical mini-channel.The numerical simulation was carried out on a modified buoyantPimpleFOAM solver in OpenFOAM 7,and was verified using experiment data.Numerical results indicate that increasing the Grashof numbers can reduce the flow stability and make the flow transition earlier.There are four stages of heat transfer in the transition process,i.e.,weakened,improved,recovered and normal heat transfer.These heat transfer phenomena in the transition process were explained from three perspectives:thermal boundary layer theory,turbulent transport and pseudo-boiling theory.Heat transfer enhancement during transition is related to the transport of supercritical molecular clusters,and these molecular clusters are regarded as pseudo-bubbles in pseudo-boiling theory.The flow pattern of the pseudo-phases in the dia-Widom process contains single-phase flow,steady pseudo-film flow,unsteady pseudo-film flow,partial pseudo-bubbles flow and flocculent pseudo-film flow.Pseudo-bubbles have similar behaviors to subcritical bubbles,i.e.,break-up,deformation,condensation and coalescence.Relevant researches in this work are favorable for understanding the heat transfer mechanism of supercritical fluids during flow transition.

Role of ferroptosis in fibrosis: From mechanism to potential therapy

Fibrosis, which is a manifestation of the physiological response to injury characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix components, is a ubiquitous outcome of the repair process. However, in cases of repetitive or severe injury, fibrosis may become dysregulated, leading to a pathological state and organ failure. In recent years, a novel form of regulated cell death, referred to as ferroptosis, has been identified as a possible contributor to fibrosis; it is characterized by iron-mediated lipid peroxidation. It has garnered attention due to the growing body of evidence linking ferroptosis and fibrogenesis, which is believed to be driven by underlying inflammation and immune responses. Despite the increasing interest in the relationship between ferroptosis and fibrosis, a comprehensive understanding of the precise role that ferroptosis plays in the formation of fibrotic tissue remains limited. This review seeks to synthesize previous research related to the topic. We categorized the different direct and indirect mechanisms by which ferroptosis may contribute to fibrosis into three categories: (1) iron overload toxicity; (2) ferroptosis-evoked necroinflammation, with a focus on ferroptosis and macrophage interplay; and (3) ferroptosis-associated pro-fibrotic factors and pathways. Furthermore, the review considers the potential implications of these findings and highlights the utilization of ferroptosis-targeted therapies as a promising strategy for mitigating the progression of fibrosis. In conclusion, novel anti-fibrotic treatments targeting ferroptosis could be an effective treatment for fibrosis.

Numerical Analysis on Charging Performance of the Macro-Encapsulating Combined Sensible-Latent Heat Storage System with Structural Parameters

For combined sensible-latent heat storage system(CSLHS)(termed as the hybrid configuration),macro encapsulation can effectively solve the leakage problem of PCMs.However,due to the poor thermal conductivity of PCMs,the charging performance of the hybrid configuration slightly increases compared to the solid structure(with only sensible materials).Meanwhile,the natural convection in the PCMs zone could improve the charging performance.So,how to improve natural convection intensity is a key issue for the CSLHS by macro encapsulating.It is found that adding fins can significantly enhance natural convection and accelerate the melting of PCM.In this paper,we proposed the hybrid configuration with fins built-in by macro encapsulation,and analyzed its charging performance with different fin structural parameters in the PCM zone by CFD simulation.In the case,the sensible heat storage material is high-temperature concrete and the PCM is a low-melting-point mixed molten salt.We analyzed the effects of fin number,fin length and fin thickness on the charging performance of the hybrid configuration respectively.From the result,the charging performance increases with the fin number,but the increase rate gradually decreases.When the fin number is 6,the charging performance increases by 20.18%compared to the situation without fin.The charging performance increases gradually with the fin length.Compared with the hybrid configuration without fin,for each 10 mm increase in fin length,its charging performances increase by 4.09%,5.26%,7.02%,8.77%,11.70%,and 15.79%,respectively.Different from number and length of fins,the effect of thickness on the charging performance is very small.When the fin thickness increased from 1 mm to 4 mm,the charging performance only increased by 2.3%.It indicates that the main reason for the improving the charging performance is to increase the natural convection intensity by dividing the PCM zone through fins.These results show that the charging performance of the CSLHS with macro encapsulation can be im

A simplified dispersion-compensation microstructure fiber with seven cores

In order to compensate the dispersion accumulated in a single mode fiber(SMF)for higher communication capacity,a simplified dispersion-compensation microstructure fiber(DC-MSF)with seven cores is proposed in this paper.The fiber’s cladding is made of pure silica without air holes,and its outer cores are composed of six germanium up-doped cylinders,which has the advantage of simple structure.The finite element method(FEM)and beam propagation method(BPM)are used to study the properties of the fiber,and the relationship between the structural parameters of the fiber and the dispersion,as well as the phase matching wavelength,is obtained.By optimizing the structural parameters of the fiber,the dispersion of the fiber can reach-5291.47 ps·nm^(-1)·km^(-1) at 1550 nm,and the coupling loss to the conventional single-mode fiber is only 0.137 d B.Compared with the conventional dispersion-compensation fiber,the fiber has lots of advantages,such as single mode transmission,easy to fabricate and low coupling loss with traditional SMF,etc.

Analysis and Modeling of Calendar Aging and Cycle Aging of LiCoO_(2)/Graphite Cells

Lithium-ion batteries are used in a wide range of applications.However,their cycle life suffers from the problem of capacity fade,which includes calendar and cycle aging.The effects of storage time,temperature and partial charge-discharge cycling on the capacity fade of Li-ion batteries are investigated in this study.The calendar aging and cycle aging are presented based on the storage and cycling experiment on LiCoO_(2)/graphite cells under different storage temperature and different ranges of state of charge(SOC).Based on the measurement data,a one-component and a double-component aging model are presented to respectively describe the capacity fade caused by calendar and cycle aging.The calendar aging of LiCoO_(2)/graphite batteries is mainly affected by temperature and SOC during the storage.Mean SOC and change in SOC(ΔSOC)are the main factors affecting battery degradation during cycling operation.

Joint Task Allocation and Resource Optimization for Blockchain Enabled Collaborative Edge Computing

Collaborative edge computing is a promising direction to handle the computation intensive tasks in B5G wireless networks.However,edge computing servers(ECSs)from different operators may not trust each other,and thus the incentives for collaboration cannot be guaranteed.In this paper,we propose a consortium blockchain enabled collaborative edge computing framework,where users can offload computing tasks to ECSs from different operators.To minimize the total delay of users,we formulate a joint task offloading and resource optimization problem,under the constraint of the computing capability of each ECS.We apply the Tammer decomposition method and heuristic optimization algorithms to obtain the optimal solution.Finally,we propose a reputation based node selection approach to facilitate the consensus process,and also consider a completion time based primary node selection to avoid monopolization of certain edge node and enhance the security of the blockchain.Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm,and the total delay can be reduced by up to 40%compared with the non-cooperative case.

Design of high frequency broadband low insertion loss SAW filter at 3.5 GHz

With the wide application of the fifth-generation mobile communication system(5G)technology,wireless communication equipment tends to develop in miniaturization,high frequency,and low loss.In this paper,a surface acoustic wave(SAW)filter with a center frequency of 3.5 GHz was designed.Firstly,the acoustic waveguide structure of the longitudinal leaky SAW(LLSAW)excitation is determined,and the two-dimensional(2D)theoretical model of the device is established by COMSOL Multiphysics.Secondly,the influence of electrode parameters on the performance of the device is studied,and the electrode parameters are optimized on this basis.By setting the device structure parameters reasonably,the spurious in the passband can be effectively suppressed.Finally,the center frequency of the mirror T-structure LLSAW filter is 3.536 GHz,the insertion loss is-1.414 dB,the bandwidth of-3 dB is 276 MHz,and the out-of-band rejection is greater than-30 dB.
