This study explored the usefulness of two-dimensional shear wave elastography(2D-SWE)in the early assessment of corpora cavernosa fibrosis(CCF).New Zealand male rabbits were randomly assigned to an experimental group or a control *** human transforming growth factor beta 1(TGF-β1)was injected into the dorsal penis tissue of rabbits in the experimental *** ultrasound and 2D-SWE examinations were performed before and 20 days after *** histological analysis was performed by hematoxylin–eosin staining,sirius red staining,and *** of 2D-SWE examination results was performed using shear wave elastography quantitative measurement(SWQ).Histological analysis outcomes were the proportion of smooth muscle cells(SMCs),collagen fibers(CFs),collagen type I(Col I),and collagen type III(Col III),as well as the SMCs/CFs ratio,measured by sirius red *** histological analysis outcomes were the positive area proportion(PAP)of TGF-β1(PAPT),fibronectin(PAPF),and Col III(PAPC),measured by *** recombinant human TGF-β1 injection,SWQ was higher in the experimental group than that in the control group(P<0.001);however,there were no differences in conventional ultrasound *** were significant differences in histological outcomes between the two groups(all P<0.05).These results indicated that 2D-SWE was superior for identifying early histological changes in CCF.

Infiltration by monocytes of the central nervous system and its role in multiple sclerosis: reflections on therapeutic strategies

Mononuclear macrophage infiltration in the central nervous system is a prominent feature of neuroinflammation. Recent studies on the pathogenesis and progression of multiple sclerosis have highlighted the multiple roles of mononuclear macrophages in the neuroinflammatory process. Monocytes play a significant role in neuroinflammation, and managing neuroinflammation by manipulating peripheral monocytes stands out as an effective strategy for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, leading to improved patient outcomes. This review outlines the steps involved in the entry of myeloid monocytes into the central nervous system that are targets for effective intervention: the activation of bone marrow hematopoiesis, migration of monocytes in the blood, and penetration of the blood–brain barrier by monocytes. Finally, we summarize the different monocyte subpopulations and their effects on the central nervous system based on phenotypic differences. As activated microglia resemble monocyte-derived macrophages, it is important to accurately identify the role of monocyte-derived macrophages in disease. Depending on the roles played by monocyte-derived macrophages at different stages of the disease, several of these processes can be interrupted to limit neuroinflammation and improve patient prognosis. Here, we discuss possible strategies to target monocytes in neurological diseases, focusing on three key aspects of monocyte infiltration into the central nervous system, to provide new ideas for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Patients with complete spinal cord injury retain the potential for volitional muscle activity in muscles located below the spinal injury ***,because of prolonged inactivity,initial attempts to activate these muscles may not effectively engage any of the remaining neurons in the descending pathway.A previous study unexpectedly found that a brief clinical round of passive activity significantly increased volitional muscle activation,as measured by surface *** this study,we further explored the effect of passive activity on surface electromyographic signals during volitional control tasks among individuals with complete spinal cord *** patients with chronic complete thoracic spinal cord injury were *** electromyography data from eight major leg muscles were acquired and compared before and after the passive activity *** results indicated that the passive activity led to an increased number of activated volitional muscles and an increased frequency of *** the cumulative root mean square of surface electromyography amplitude for volitional control of movement showed a slight increase after passive activity,the difference was not statistically *** findings suggest that brief passive activity may enhance the ability to initiate volitional muscle activity during surface electromyography tasks and underscore the potential of passive activity for improving residual motor control among patients with motor complete spinal cord injury.

Radar cross section(RCS)is an important attribute of radar targets and has been widely used in automatic target recognition(ATR).In a passive radar,only the RCS multiplied by a coefficient is available due to the unknown transmitting *** different transmitter-receiver(bistatic)pairs,the coefficients are ***,the recovered RCS in different transmitter-receiver(bistatic)pairs cannot be fused for further *** this paper,we propose a quantity named quasi-echo-power(QEP)as well as a method for eliminating differences of this quantity among different transmitter-receiver(bistatic)*** QEP is defined as the target echo power after being compensated for distance and pattern propagation *** proposed method estimates the station difference coefficients(SDCs)of transmitter-receiver(bistatic)pairs relative to the reference transmitter-receiver(bistatic)pair ***,it compensates the QEP and gets the compensated *** compensated QEP possesses a linear relationship with the target *** analyses on the simulated and real-life QEP data show that the proposed method can effectively estimate the SDC between different stations,and the compensated QEP from different receiving stations has the same distribution characteristics for the same target.

The development of hypersonic precooled combined cycle engine provides a reliable power system for the future intercontinental navigation and reusable space orbital *** compact heat exchanger precooler is the key component of the cooling cycle system,which provides efficient heat management for the hypersonic *** investigation mainly focused on the manufacturing process of precooler,and the typical structure of the precooler,ultrathin-walled capillary structure,was facilitated by the vacuum brazing using the particle reinforced composite filler *** effects of different types and contents of the reinforced particle on the spreading behaviour,microstructural evolution,mechanical performance changes were investigated in *** the cooling process,the nucleation and growth of the c-Ni solid solution on the surface of the reinforced particles was the main reason for the microstructure *** to the Ni particles,the more obvious mechanical properties improvement could be achieved by using IN718 particles reinforced composite filler *** tensile strength and elongation of the brazed ultrathin-walled structure present 9.36%and 47.27%higher than that using initial filler ***,the micro-hardness distribution result revealed that the reinforced particles reduced the overall micro-hardness of the brazed region,dispersed the eutectic structure and increased the hardness dispersion,which would reduce the stress concentration tendency and improve the structural properties.

In cellular systems,establishing the initial symbol timing of potential preambles is the first step of a cell *** envelope fluctuation of the downlink signal hinders the successful timing of conventional symbol timing *** solve this problem,a hybrid timing strategy is proposed with two novel detectors,namely the normalized replica-based detector and normalized differential *** strategy first detects all potential preambles via the normalized replica-based detector and then employs the normalized differential detector to verify the target preamble,which comes from the target cell and has the highest *** strategy is unaffected by envelope fluctuation and has computational complexity comparable to that of conventional ***-lations and real-data tests show that the hybrid timing strategy is robust and practical for initial symbol timing.

Although colorectal cancer (CRC) has no longer been the leading cancer killer worldwide for years with the exponential development in computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography/CT as well as virtual colonoscopy for early detection, the CRC related mortality is still high. The objective of CRC screening is to reduce the burden of CRC and thereby the morbidity and mortality rates of the disease. It is believed that this goal can be achieved by regularly screening the average-risk population, enabling the detection of cancer at early, curable stages, and polyps before they become cancerous. Large-scale screening with multimodality imaging approaches plays an important role in reaching that goal to detect polyps, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and CRC in early stage. This article reviews kinds of presentative imaging procedures for various screening options and updates detecting, staging and re-staging of CRC patients for determining the optimal therapeutic method and forecasting the risk of CRC recurrence and the overall prognosis. The combination use of virtual colonoscopy and conventional endoscopy, advantages and limitations of these modalities are also discussed. (C) 2014 Baishideng Publishing Group Inc. Spontaneous combustion(sponcom) is one of the issues of concern with the blasting gallery(BG) method of coal mining and has the potential to cause fires, and impact on production and safety, greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions and huge costs involved in controlling the aftermath situations. Some of the research attempts made to prevent and control coal mine fires and spontaneous combustion in thick seams worked with bord and pillar mining methods are presented in this paper. In the study, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) modelling techniques were used to simulate and assess the effects of various mining methods, layouts, designs, and different operational and ventilation parameters on the flow of goaf gases in BG panels. A wide range of parametric studies were conducted to develop proactive strategies to control and prevent ingress of oxygen into the goaf area preventing spontaneous combustion and mine fires.
