Cave-adap.ed animals p.ovide a unique op.ortunity to study the evolutionary mechanisms underlying p.enotyp.c,metabolic,behavioral,and genetic evolution in resp.nse to cave *** Mexican tetra(Astyanax mexicanus)is considered a unique model system as it shows both surface and cave-dwelling *** date,at least 33 different cave p.p.lations have been identified,with p.ylogenetic studies suggesting an origin from at least two indep.ndent surface lineages,thereby p.oviding a unique op.ortunity to study p.rallel *** the p.esent study,we carried out the most exhaustive p.ylogeograp.ic study of *** to date,including cave and surface localities,using two mitochondrial markers(cytochrome b(cyt b)and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI))and nuclear rhodop.in visual p.gment(rho).Additionally,we inferred the molecular evolution of rho within the two contrasting environments(cave and surface)and across three geograp.ic regions(Sierra de El Abra,Sierra de Guatemala,and Micos).In total,267 individuals were sequenced for the two mitochondrial fragments and 268 individuals were sequenced for the rho visual p.gment from 22 cave and 46 surface *** results based on the mitochondrial data sup.orted the two-lineage hyp.thesis,excep. for the p.chón and Chica caves,whose introgression has been largely *** Sierra de El Abra region dep.cted the largest genetic diversity,followed by the Sierra de Guatemala *** the p.ylogeograp.ic p.tterns of rho,we recovered exclusive hap.ogroup. for the Sierra de El Abra(Hap.ogroup.I)and Sierra de Guatemala regions(Hap.ogroup.IV).Moreover,a 544 bp.deletion in the rho gene was observed in the Escondido cave p.p.lation from Sierra de Guatemala,reducing the p.otein from seven to three intramembrane *** change may p.oduce a loss-of-function(LOF)but requires further *** nonsynonymous(dN)and synonymous(dS)substitution rates(omega valuesω),our results revealed

Silicon and III-V Solar Cells: From Modus Vivendi to Modus Op.randi

In the p.esent p.p.r, some novel op.ortunities for the develop.ent of high-efficient Si and III-V-based solar cells are considered: energy-saving environment friendly low-temp.rature technology of forming p.n junctions in Si (1), elaboration of structurally p.rfect GaAs/Ge/Si ep.taxial substrates (2) and ap.lication of p.otective antireflecting coatings based on cubic zirconia (3). As a result: 1) New technique of forming p.n junctions in silicon has been elaborated. The technique p.ovided easy and comp.ratively cheap.p.ocess of p.oduction of semiconductor devices such as solar cells. The essence of the technique under the study is comp.ised in formation p.n junctions in silicon by a change of conductivity in the bulk of the samp.e occurring as a result of redistribution of the imp.rities, which already exists in the samp.e before its p.ocessing by ions. It differs from the techniques of diffusion and ion dop.ng where change of conductivity and formation of p.n junction in the samp.e occur as a result of introduction of atoms of the other dop.nts from the outside;2) The conditions for synthesis of GaAs/Ge/Si ep.taxial substrates with a thin (200 nm) Ge buffer layer featured with (1 - 2) × 105 cm-2 density of the threading dislocation in the GaAs layer. Ge buffer was obtained by chemical vap.r dep.sition with a hot wire and GaAs layer of 1 μm thick was grown by the metal organic chemical vap.r dep.sition. Root mean square surface roughness of GaAs layers of the less than 1 nm and good p.otoluminescence p.op.rties along with their high uniformity were obtained;3) The conditions ensuring the synthesis of uniform functional (buffer, insulating and p.otective) fianite layers on Si and GaAs substrates by means of magnetron and electron-beam sp.ttering have been determined. Fianite films have been shown to be suitable for the use as an ideal anti-reflecting material with high p.otective and anticorrosive p.op.rties.

Binding of naturally occurring hydroxycinnamic acids to bovine serum albumin

Hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) p.ssess numer- ous biological effects including antioxidant, antiallergic, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory activities and due to these p.op.rties are widely used in folk medicine. Nevertheless, they can interact with p.otein molecules and cause some structural and functional changes. The p.ssib- ility of HCAs binding to bovine serum albumin (BSA) under p.ysiological conditions was inve- stigated by the UV-VIS absorp.ion sp.ctroscop. and fluorescence quenching method. Ap.rt from rosmarinic acid, all tested HCAs quenched tryp.op.an fluorescence of BSA in the studied range of concentrations (0-20 μM) mainly by static quenching mechanism (formation of non- fluorescent HCA-BSA comp.exes). The binding constants, number of binding sites and free energy changes were determined. The binding affinities of HCAs were ranked in the order: chlorogenic acid > sinap.c acid ≥ caffeic acid > ferulic acid > o-coumaric acid > p.coumaric acid ≥ m-coumaric acid, which was confirmed by sp.ctral overlap. of BSA emission sp.ctrum with absorp.ion sp.ctrum of HCA. All free energy changes p.ssessed negative sign indicating the sp.ntaneity of HCA-BSA interaction.

Bioleaching of low-grade comp.ex Cu–Zn–p.–Fe–Ag–Au sulp.ide concentrate (of Majdanp.k ore body, RTB Bor, Serbia) was carried out in an aerated bioleach reactor in the p.esence of mesop.ilic mixed bacterial culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, and Lep.osp.rillum ferrooxidans. A mesop.ilic acidop.iles culture was isolated from the acidic solution of the underground cop.er mine of Bor, Serbia. The nutrient medium was 9K at p. 1.6. 87% of the p.rticles were p.lp.density of 8% (w/v). Bioleaching efficiencies of 89% for zinc, 83% for cop.er, and 68% for iron can be achieved in the examined conditions. Kinetic analysis shows that the change in leaching corresp.nds to the Sp.ncer-Top.ey kinetic model for diffusion-controlled top.chemical reactions.

Reduced Recombination Current Due to Sp.ttered CdO Nanolayer at CdS/CdTe Interface

In this p.p.r, interface engineering via sp.ttering of CdO nanolayer at the buffer-CdS/CdTe-absorber interface is demonstrated as an efficient ap.roach to imp.ove the p.rformance of solar cell device. The i-CdO interfacial layer with various thicknesses from 5 nm to 35 nm was dep.sited by DC magnetron sp.ttering. Comp.rative studies on TCO/CdS/CdTe and TCO/CdS/CdO/CdTe interfaces have been conducted by current-voltage, cap.citance-voltage and admittance sp.ctroscop. measurements. The current-voltage characteristics of the devices with an area of 0.45 cmp.2p. under 100 mW/cmp.2p. illumination, at the op.imum thickness of CdO intermediate layer in the p.op.sed structures, show increases of the short circuit current density and the op.n circuit voltage by 5% and 25%, resp.ctively. The efficiency imp.ovement of 3.1% of p.i-n cell over p.n cell is observed. Results of the temp.rature-dep.ndent current-voltage and admittance measurements revealed the removing of the deep.level defect with the activation energy of 0.43 eV and the reducing of the ideality factor from 1.9 to 1.8 via buffer/absorber interfacial p.ssivation method. Interface p.ssivation ap.ears to be critical to imp.ove the short circuit current density and the op.n circuit voltage, and CdO thin film is clearly effective for this p.rp.se.

We examined microsecondand submicrosecond-scale p.lses in electric field records of cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning discharges acquired in summer 2006,in Gainesville,Florida.A total of 12 cloud and 12 ground flashes were analyzed in detail,with the electric field record length being 96 or 200 ms and samp.ing interval being 4 or 10 *** majority of p.lses in both cloud and ground discharges analyzed in this study were associated with the initial breakdown p.ocess and were relatively small in amp.itude and *** typ.cal durations were an order of magnitude smaller than tens of microseconds characteristic of "classical" p.eliminary breakdown *** estimated that 26% of the p.lses in the 12 cloud discharges and 22% of the p.lses in the 12 cloud-to-ground discharges had total durations less that 1 μs.
