m.crobial processes and factors controlling their activities in alkaline lakes of the m.ngolian plateau

A striking feature of the m.ngolian plateau is the wide range of air tem.eratures during a year, -30 to 30~C. High sum.er tem.eratures, atm.spheric weathering and the arid clim.te lead to form.tion of num.rous alkaline soda lakes that are covered by ice during 6-7 m.nths per year. During the study period, the lakes had pH values between 8.1 to 10.4 and salinity between 1.8 and 360 g/L. According to chem.cal com.osition, the lakes belong to sodium.carbonate, sodium.chloride-carbonate and sodium.sulfate-carbonate types. This paper presents the data on the water chem.cal com.osition, results of the determ.nation of the rates of m.crobial processes in m.crobial m.ts and sedim.nts in the lakes studied, and the results of a Principal Com.onent Analysis of environm.ntal variables and m.crobial activity data. Tem.erature was the m.st im.ortant factor that influenced both chem.cal com.osition and m.crobial activity, pH and salinity are also im.ortant factors for the m.crobial processes. Dark CO2 fixation is im.acted m.stly by salinity and the chem.cal com.osition of the lake water. Total photosynthesis and sulfate-reduction are im.acted m.stly by pH. Photosynthesis is the dom.nant process of prim.ry production, but the highest rate （386 m. C/（L.d）） determ.ned in the lakes studied were 2-3 tim.s lower than in m.crobial m.ts of lakes located in tropical zones. This can be explained by the relatively short warm.period that lasts only 3-4 m.nths per year. The highest m.asured rate of dark CO2 assim.lation （59.8 m. C/（L·d）） was m.ch lower than photosynthesis. The highest rate of sulfate reduction was 60 m. S/（L·d）, while that of m.thanogenesis was 75.6 μL CH4/（L·d） in the alkaline lakes of m.ngolian plateau. The rate of organic m.tter consum.tion during sulfate reduction was 3-4 orders of m.gnitude higher than that associated with m.thanogenesis.

Top Lim.t Characteristics of New Type Cascade PC on the Basis of Hom.geneous Sem.conductor

A new type hom.geneous planar PC （photoelectric converter） on the basis of m.ltijunction sem.conductor n＋-p-p＋-n＋-p-p＋-...-n＋-p-p＋ structure has been investigated. The entire structure is a cascade PC consisting of a num.er of elem.nts of the structure--single PCs connected in series and illum.nated by light that has consistently passed through the previous sem.conductor layers. The theory of converter of both m.nochrom.tic and solar radiation has been developed and the lim.ting values of their photoelectric and power characteristics have been determ.ned, including the optim.l thickness and num.er of single PCs layered on a base PC, their spectral sensitivity, current-voltage characteristics and efficiency. The open-circuit voltage grows practically linearly with the num.er of elem.nts in the cascade. The top efficiency lim.t for a certain optim.l elem.nts num.er reaches its m.xim.m.that exceeds considerably that of the base PC, especially in the range of low collecting coefficient of charge carriers in the base PC.

Characterization of refractory behaviour of com.lex gold/silver ore by diagnostic leaching

The am.nability of a refractory ore to the extraction of gold and silver by cyanide leaching was investigated. Diagnostic leaching tests were also perform.d to shed light on the refractory characteristics of ore. The leaching tests show that the extraction of gold and silver is consistently low, i.e. ≤47% and ≤19.2%, respectively, over a leaching period of 24 h. Even fine grinding (e.g. m. does not im.rove the recovery of gold and silver. Diagnostic leaching approach provides inform.tion into the cause of the refractoriness of the ore. The findings suggest that the refractoriness is induced by the dissem.nation and encapsulation of the very fine gold and silver particles largely in the carbonates, oxides and sulfides and, to a sm.ll extent, with silicates present in the ore m.trix. These findings highlight the practical im.ortance of diagnostic leaching for the understanding of the refractory characteristic of such an ore and for the identification of possible pretreatm.nt options to overcom. its refractoriness prior to cyanide leaching.

Com.lete fusion of two selected ceils allows for the creation of novel hybrid cells with inherited genetic properties from.both original cells. Alternatively, via fusion of a selected cell with a selected vesicle, chem.cals or genes can be directly delivered into the cell of interest, to control cellular reactions or gene expression. Here, we dem.nstrate how to perform.an optically controlled fusion of two selected cells or of one cell and one vesicle. Fusion is m.diated by laser irradiating plasm.nic gold nanoparticles optically trapped between two cells （or a vesicle and a cell） of interest. This hot-particle-m.diated fusion causes total m.xing of the two cytoplasm. and the two cell m.m.ranes resulting in form.tion of a new hybrid cell with an intact cell m.m.rane and enzym.tic activity following fusion. Sim.larly, fusion between a vesicle and a cell results in delivery of the vesicle cargo to the cytoplasm. and after fusion, the cell shows signs of viability. The m.thod is an im.lem.ntation of targeted drug delivery at the single-cell level and has a great potential for cellular control and design.

The recently proposed concept of graphene photodetectors offers rem.rkable properties such as unprecedented com.actness,ultrabroadband detection,and an ultrafast response ***,owing to the low optical absorption of pristine m.nolayer graphene,the intrinsically low responsivity of graphene photodetectors significantly hinders the developm.nt of practical *** address this issue,num.rous efforts have thus far been m.de to enhance the light–graphene interaction using plasm.nic *** approaches,however,can be significantly advanced by leveraging the other critical aspect of graphene photoresponsivity enhancem.nt-electrical junction *** has been reported that the dom.nant photocarrier generation m.chanism.in graphene is the phototherm.electric(PTE)***,the two energy conversion m.chanism. involved in the graphene photodetection process are light-to-heat and heat-to-electricity *** this work,we propose a m.ticulously designed device architecture to sim.ltaneously enhance the two conversion ***,a gap plasm.n structure is used to absorb a m.jor portion of the incident light to induce localized heating,and a pair of split gates is used to produce a p-n junction in graphene to augm.nt the PTE current *** gap plasm.n structure and the split gates are designed to share com.on key com.onents so that the proposed device architecture concurrently realizes both optical and electrical *** experim.ntally dem.nstrate the dom.nance of the PTE effect in graphene photocurrent generation and observe a 25-fold increase in the generated photocurrent com.ared to the un-enhanced *** further photocurrent enhancem.nt can be achieved by applying a DC bias,the proposed device concept shows vast potential for practical applications.
