Recent work has shown that the vaginal microbiome exerts a strong impact on women's gynecological ***,collection of vaginal specimens is invasive and requires previous clinical training or the involvement of a trained *** contrast,urine sample collection is routine and noninvasive and does not require involvement of a *** sought to compare the vaginal and urogenital microbiomes to assess the utility of voided urine samples as a proxy for the vaginal *** urogenital and vaginal samples were collected from pregnant women and characterized by 16S rRNA taxonomic *** examined diversities and compositions of paired urogenital and vaginal microbiomes using five discrete strategies to explore the similarity between the vaginal and urogenital microbiomes.A strategy comparing the paired urogenital and vaginal microbiomes in which taxa were assigned using the STIRRUPS database and urine-specific taxa were removed showed no significant difference in diversity and composition between the paired urogenital and vaginal ***,the relative abundances of common vaginal taxa were linearly correlated with those in the paired *** similarities suggest that voided urine samples could represent a noninvasive protocol for accurate profiling of the vaginalmicrobiome with likely clinical ***,a machine learning model was established in which the voided urine microbiome was compared favorably to the vaginal microbiome in predicting bacterial vaginosis.

Near-fault ground motions with prominent acceleration pulses:pulse characteristics and ductility demand

Major earthquakes of last 15 years （e.g., Northridge 1994, Kobe 1995 and Chi-Chi 1999） have shown that many near-fault ground motions possess prominent acceleration pulses. Some of the prominent ground acceleration pulses are related to large ground velocity pulses, others are caused by mechanisms that are totally different from those causing the velocity pulses or fling steps. Various efforts to model acceleration pulses have been reported in the literature. In this paper, research results from a recent study of acceleration pulse prominent ground motions and an analysis of structural damage induced by acceleration pulses are summarized. The main results of the study include：（1） temporal characteristics of acceleration pulses; （2） ductility demand spectrum of simple acceleration pulses with respect to equivalent classes of dynamic systems and pulse characteristic parameters; and （3） estimation of fundamental period change under the excitation of strong acceleration pulses. By using the acceleration pulse induced linear acceleration spectrum and the ductility demand spectrum, a simple procedure has been developed to estimate the ductility demand and the fundamental period change of a reinforced concrete （RC） structure under the impact of a strong acceleration pulse.

The choice that a solid system“makes”when adopting a crystal structure(stable or metastable)is ultimately governed by the interactions between electrons forming chemical *** we analyze six prototypical binary transition metal compounds and shed light on the connection between Mott physics and the behavior of the energy as a function of the spatial arrangement of the atoms in these ***,we find that the main qualitative features of this complex behavior in the Mott phase of these systems can be traced back to the fact that the strong d-electron correlations influence substantially the charge transfer mechanism,which,in turn,controls the electrostatic *** result advances our understanding of the influence of strong correlations on the crystal structure,opens a new avenue for extending structure prediction methodologies to strongly correlated materials,and paves the way for predicting and studying metastability and polymorphism in these systems.

Molecular hydrogen recently attracted lots of attention in biomedical community because of its abilities to mod-ulate signal transduction,protein phosphorylation,and gene expression that enable its anti-inflammatory,anti-allergy,and anti-apoptotic ***,controllable and local delivery of hydrogen molecules to tissues still remains ***,we propose a new method of delivering molecular hydrogen directly to human skin cells by designing a hydrogen-generating patch that releases hydrogen in surrounding environment as a product of chemical reaction of aluminum and carbon hydroxide in presence of *** show that in the pres-ence of molecular hydrogen the cells viability,expression of collagen,and migration efficiency of cells increase,thus suggesting that hydrogen can be used to promote better and faster healing of skin issues such as wounds and bruises.

Dear Editor,Metastasis is the cause of most fatalities in cancer patients and remains the phenomenon poorly understood mechanistically. Deciphering of the regulatory networks underlying the cancer cell metastasis is urgently needed. Nucleolar protein 7 (NOL7) has been reported to function as a tumor suppressor in cervical cancer.1 Our current study reveals a novel tumor-promoting capacity of NOL7 in melanoma. We first detected that NOL7 expression is upregulated in metastatic melanoma as compared with its expression at the primary site through isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation proteomic screening, further confirming this finding with the analysis of NOL7 protein and messenger RNA (mRNA) levels (Supplementary Fig. S1). Importantly, NOL7 expression increased with the disease progression from benign nevus to primary melanoma and further to metastatic melanoma (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. S1d). Previous studies have shown that melanoma is commonly associated with the amplification of the chromosome region 6p, particularly 6p21–23, where the NOL7 gene resides, and that this region frequently undergoes heterozygous loss in cervical cancer.2 It might therefore be predicted that NOL7 exhibits a different expression pattern and plays different roles in melanoma and cervical cancer.

Because of its advantages of high neutron yield, high melting point, high thermal conductivity and low sputteringyield, tungsten is proposed as solid target material in many spallation neutron source facilities and even acceleratordriven sub-critical system (ADS) device in future. Microstructural and mechanical properties of powder-metallurgypure tungsten material, which is prepared with two different production methods of hot rolling and forging process,have been investigated in this study. Because of anisotropic structure induced by different thermal treatments,specimens in different orientations were cut from the hot forged and rolled materials. Metallography observationwas performed in order to identify the grain structure of the forged and rolled tungsten materials. Consideringsurface effect on mechanical properties of tungsten, the tensile test of all hot rolled samples with two differentsurface conditions of as-machined and electro-polished were also performed in the temperature range of 25 500 ?C.

Induction of clusterin Expression by Neuronal Cell Death in Zebrafish

Clusterin, a protein associated with multiple functions, is expressed in a wide variety of mammalian tissues. Although clusterin is known to be involved in neurodegenerative diseases, ageing, and tumorigenesis, a detailed analysis of the consequences of gain- or loss-of- function approaches has yet to be performed to understand the underlying mechanisms of clusterin functions. Since clusterin levels change in neurological diseases, it is likely that clusterin contributes to cell death and degeneration in general. Zebrafish was investigated as a model system to study human diseases. During development, zebrafish clusterin was expressed in the notochord and nervous system. Embryonic overexpression of clusterin by mRNA microinjection did not affect axis formation, whereas its knock-down by anti-sense morpholino treatment resulted in neuronal cell death. To analyze the function of clusterin in neurodegeneration, a transgenic zebrafish was investigated, in which nitroreductase expression is regulated under the control of a neuron-specifc huC promoter which is active between the stages of early neuronal precursors and mature neurons. Nitroreductase turns metronidazole into a cytotoxic agent that induces cell death within 12 h. After metronidazole treatment, transgenic zebrafish showed neuron-specific cell death. Interestingly, we also observed a dramatic induction of clusterin expression in the brain and spinal cord in these fish, suggesting a direct or indirect role of clusterin in neuronal cell death and thus, more generally, in neurodegeneration.

[1]A critical question in ionospheric physics is the state of the ionosphere and relevant processes under extreme solar *** solar activity during 2007-2009 is extremely prolonged low,which offers us a unique opportunity to explore this issue. In this study,we collected the global ionosonde measurements of the F layer critical frequency(fF),E layer critical frequency(fE),and F layer virtual height(h’F) and the total electron content(TEC) maps produced by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory,which were retrieved from dual-frequency GPS receivers distributed worldwide,to investigate the ionospheric phenomena during solar minimum of cycle 23/24,particularly the difference in the ionosphere between solar minima of cycle 23/24 and the preceding *** analysis indicates that the moving 1 year mean fF at most ionosonde stations and the global average TEC went to the lowest during cycle 23/24 *** solar cycle differences in fF minima display local time dependence,being more negative during the daytime than at ***,the cycle difference in daytime fF minima is about -0.5 MHz and even reaches to around -1.2 *** contrast,a complex picture presents in global h’F and fE,Evident reduction exists prevailingly in the moving 1 year mean hF at most stations,while no huge differences are detected at several stations.A compelling feature is the increase in fJE at some stations,which requires independent data for further *** analysis indicates that record low fF and low TEC can be explained principally in terms of the decline in solar extreme ultraviolet irradiance recorded by SOHO/SEM,which suggests low solar EUV being the prevailing contributor to the unusual low electron density in the ionosphere during cycle 23/24 *** also verifies that a quadratic fitting still reasonably captures the solar variability of fF and global average TEC at such low solar activity levels.
