Effectiveness of tertiary treatment processes in removing different classes of emerging contaminants from domestic wastewater

In this work,38 different organic emerging contaminants(ECs),belonging to various chemical classes such as pharmaceuticals(PhCs),endocrine-disrupting chemicals(EDCs),benzotriazoles(BTRs),benzothiazoles(BTHs),and perfluorinated compounds(PFCs),were initially identified and quantified in the biologically treated wastewater collected from Athens’(greece)Sewage Treatment Plant(STP).Processes already used in existing STPs such as microfiltration(MF),nanofiltration(NF),ultrafiltration(UF),UV radiation,and powdered activated carbon(PAC)were assessed for ECs’removal,under the conditions that represent their actual application for disinfection or advanced wastewater *** results indicated that MF removed only one out of the 38 ECs and hence it was selected as pretreatment step for the other *** radiation in the studied conditions showed low to moderate removal for 5 out of the 38 *** showed better results than UF due to the smaller pore sizes of the filtration ***,this enhancement was observed mainly for 8 compounds originating from the classes of PhCs and PFCs,while the removal of EDCs was not statistically *** the various studied technologies,PAC stands out due to its capability to sufficiently remove most *** particular,removal rates higher than 70%were observed for 9 compounds,22 were partially removed,while 7 demonstrated low removal *** on our screening experiments,future research should focus on scaling-up PAC in actual conditions,combining PAC with other processes,and conduct a complete economic and environmental assessment of the treatment.

Climate change is an issue of major concern *** impact on the natural and human environment is studied intensively,as the expected shift in climate will be significant in the next few *** experience shows that the effects will be critical in coastal areas,resulting in erosion and inundation phenomena *** addition to that,coastal areas are subject to "pressures" from upstream watersheds in terms of water quality and sediment *** present paper studies the impact of climate change on sediment transport and morphology in the aforementioned coupled *** study regards a sandy coast and its upstream watershed in Chalkidiki,North greece;it is based on:(a)an integrated approach for the quantitative correlation of the two through numerical modeling,developed by the authors,and(b)a calibrated application of the relevant models Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)and PELNCON-M,applied to the watershed and the coastal zone,*** examined climate change scenarios focus on a shift of the rainfall distribution towards fewer and more extreme rainfall events,and an increased frequency of occurrence of extreme wave *** indicate the significance of climatic pressures in wide-scale sediment dynamics,and are deemed to provide a useful perspective for researchers and policy planners involved in the study of coastal morphology evolution in a changing climate.

Comparison of Oral Manifestations in Hospitalized COVID-19 Positive Patients and COVID-19 Negative Dental Outpatients. A Case Series Study and Literature Review

Background: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory infectious disease, also named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which can cause various systemic manifestations that pose a threat to human life. Oral lesions in patients with COVID-19 may appear during or after the illness and may or may not be a consequence of the viral infection. Objective: In this case series we compare the oral manifestations in hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients and COVID-19 negative dental outpatients. Methods: 60 hospitalized COVID-19 patients and 41 control patients, were examined for oral signs and symptoms. The controls were dental patients who visited the hospital for dental care without complaining of any problems related to the oral cavity itself. Results: We have observed a strong association between certain clinical findings and COVID-19, including alterations in taste (ageusia, dysgeusia, and hypogeusia), anosmia, hairy tongue, tongue imprints, red tongue, erythematous candidiasis, pseudomembranous candidiasis, and exfoliative cheilitis. A trend but not statistically significant association at the level of 5% was also noted for colored tongue, linea alba, and pale mucosa. On the contrary, fissured tongue and oral mucosa pigmentation were more frequent in the controls, statistically significant at the level of 5%. Conclusion: COVID-19 has been found to impact the oral cavity, resulting in various oral lesions that can be attributed to either the direct action of the virus or the patient’s immune response.

Influence of fly ash and sewage sludge application on wheat biomass production,nutrients availability,and soil properties

The influence of fly ash(FA)applied alone and/or with sewage sludge(SS)on wheat(Triticum vulgare)grain yield,biomass production and soil properties was studied in a field *** results showed that both FA and SS significantly increased grain yield and plant *** applied alone increased significantly soil pH and EC while FA applied together with SS did not significantly affect them compared to mono FA *** pH and EC values increased with time in FA and FA-SS *** increased soil organic matter and total N content and SS applied together with FA increased also available soil *** the plant nutrients tested only tissue N concentration was increased significantly in all treatments compared to ***,Zn,Mn,Ni,and Pb at both available and total concentrations are significantly affected.

The Cynical Thrasymachus

In this paper, I revisit the question of the consistency of Thrasymachus＇ position on justice in the First Book of the Republic. The paper falls into four parts. （The first part is an introduction.） In the second part, I examine two influential interpretations of the sophist＇s views, george B. Kerferd＇s and Timothy D. J. Chappell＇s, and argue that neither one fully resolves the riddle of Thrasymachus. In the third part, I claim that the sophist has a ＂descriptive＂ theory of justice, not a ＂prescriptive＂ one, and that no moral command to act in any particular way follows from this theory. In the fourth and final part, I propose a new approach to the whole issue by arguing that the essential problem with Thrasymachus＇ theory is not the incompatibility between his two definitions of justice in 338c and 343c, as it is usually assumed, but the fact that in Book One he uses two different and irreconcilable conceptions of justice. It is because the sophist uses the term ＂justice＂ to mean different things in different parts of the text that his overall position is ultimately inconsistent.

A Computational Comparison of Basis Updating Schemes for the Simplex Algorithm on a CPU-gPU System

The computation of the basis inverse is the most time-consuming step in simplex type algorithms. This inverse does not have to be computed from scratch at any iteration, but updating schemes can be applied to accelerate this calculation. In this paper, we perform a computational comparison in which the basis inverse is computed with five different updating schemes. Then, we propose a parallel implementation of two updating schemes on a CPU-gPU System using MATLAB and CUDA environment. Finally, a computational study on randomly generated full dense linear programs is preented to establish the practical value of gPU-based implementation.

Service Adaptable 3g Turbo Decoder for Indoor/Low Range Outdoor Environment

For the well-known 3g mobile communications standard UMTS, four different service classes have been specified. Considering two turbo decoding algorithms, like SOVA and log-MAP, it would be desirable to use an efficient turbo decoder. In this paper this decoder is shown to adapt dynamically to different service scenarios, considering parameters like performance and complexity for indoor/low range outdoor operating en-vironment. The scenarios show that for streaming service class real-time class applications the proposed de-coding algorithm depends on data rate;for the majority of scenarios SOVA is proposed, whereas log-MAP is optimal for increased data rates and medium-sized frames. On the other hand, conversational service class real-time applications cannot be established. For the majority of non real-time applications (interactive and background service classes) either algorithm can be used, while log-MAP is proposed for medium data rates and frame lengths.

CEM43 thermal dose is a very common concept in thermal *** dose is the maximum amount of energy that can be transmitted during hyperthermia therapy conducted on temperature-sensitive *** dose is also the maximum value of local energy accumulation in human bodies,which can lead to tissue injury and *** dose can also decrease the finishing temperature and reduce the energy to the tolerable *** are two functions of the individualized hyperthermia treatment plan:it determines the setting and location that can realize the best tumor hyperthermia therapy;at the same time,it can decrease the effect of hyperthermia therapy on healthy *** are four steps in the treatment plan of hyperthermia therapy for tumors:the first step is to establish a three dimensional human body model and its corresponding an atomical structure that can be used in numerical algorithm via medical imaging resources;the second step is to determine the volume of the electromagnetic energy *** on the peculiarity of frequency and materials,even full-wave electromagnetic wave or quasi-static technique can be used to determine the tissue *** of the therapy can be conducted based on thermal dose and the corresponding tissue damage model;the third step is to use Arrhenius model to provide direct evaluation of tissues in the thermal ablation zone,solidification zone,as well as the necrotic area;the last step is the optimization of the treatment plan.
