Causes of Cretaceous subduction termination below South China and Borneo:Was the Proto-South China Sea underlain by an oceanic plateau?

The South China,Indochina,and Borneo margins surrounding the South China Sea contain long-lived arcs that became inactive at approximately 85 Ma,even though an embayment of oceanic crust(the‘Proto-South China Sea’)remained in the intervening *** oceanic crust eventually subducted in the Cenozoic below Borneo and the Cagayan arc,while the modern South China Sea opened in its *** investigate the enigmatic cessation of Mesozoic subduction below South China and Borneo,we studied a fragment of oceanic crust and overlying trench-fill sediments that accreted to NW Borneo during the final stages of Paleo-Pacific *** on radiolarian biostratigraphy of cherts overlying the pillow basalts and detrital zircon geochronology of the trench-fill,we constrained the minimum age of the oceanic crust during accretion to 40 *** shows that subduction cessation was not related to ridge *** analysis of pillow basalts revealed an enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt signature comparable to oceanic *** paleomagnetism,we show that this fragment of oceanic crust was not part of the Izanagi Plate but was part of a plate(the‘Pontus’Plate)separated from the Izanagi Plate by a subduction *** on the minimum 40 Ma age of the oceanic crust and its geochemistry,we suggest that Mesozoic subduction below South China and Borneo stopped when an oceanic plateau entered the trench,while the eastern plate margin with the Izanagi Plate remained *** show how our findings offer opportunities to restore plate configurations of the Panthalassa-Tethys junction region.

Indian plate paleogeography, subduction and horizontal underthrusting below Tibet: paradoxes, controversies and opportunities

The India–Asia collision zone is the archetype to calibrate geological responses to continent–continent collision, but hosts a paradox: there is no orogen-wide geological record of oceanic subduction after initial collision around 60–55 Ma, yet thousands of kilometers of post-collisional subduction occurred before the arrival of unsubductable continental lithosphere that currently horizontally underlies Tibet. Kinematically restoring incipient horizontal underthrusting accurately predicts geologically estimated diachronous slab break-off, unlocking the Miocene of Himalaya–Tibet as a natural laboratory for unsubductable lithosphere convergence. Additionally, three endmember paleogeographic scenarios exist with different predictions for the nature of post-collisional subducted lithosphere but each is defended and challenged based on similar data types. This paper attempts at breaking through this impasse by identifying how the three paleogeographic scenarios each challenge paradigms in geodynamics, orogenesis, magmatism or paleogeographic reconstruction and identify opportunities for methodological advances in paleomagnetism, sediment provenance analysis, and seismology to conclusively constrain Greater Indian paleogeography.

The ESA and CAS SMILE mission orbit is highly elliptical and will pass through multiple radiation *** Soft X-ray Imager(SXI)instrument aboard has a radiation shutter door designed to close when the surrounding radiation flux is *** shutter door will close when passing below an altitude threshold to protect against trapped particles in the Earth’s van Allen ***,two radiation environments can be approximated based on the shutter door position:open and *** instrument background for the CCds(Charge-Coupled devices)that form the focal plane array of the SXI were evaluated for the two *** to the correlation of the space environment with the solar cycle,the solar minima and maxima,the background was also evaluated at these two *** results demonstrated that the highest instrument background will occur during solar minima due to the main contributing source being Galactic Cosmic Rays(GCRs).It was also found that the open background was highest for solar minima and that the closed background was highest during solar *** is due to the radiation shutter door acting as a scattering centre and the changes in the energy flux distribution of the GCRs between the two solar extremes.

Genetic load and inbreeding are recognized as important factors to be considered in conservation *** levels of both can increase the risk of population extinction by negatively impacting fitness-related characters in many species of plants and animals,including humans(inbreeding depression).Genomic tech-niques are increasingly used in measuring and understanding genetic load and inbreeding and their importance in evolution and *** used whole genome resequencing data from two sibling grouse species in subarctic Eurasia to quantify *** found a large range of inbreeding measured as FROH(fraction of runs of homozygosity)in individuals from different populations of Chinese Grouse(Tetrastes sewerzowi)and Hazel Grouse(***).FROH estimated from genome-wide runs of homozygosity(ROH)ranged from 0.02 to 0.24 among Chinese Grouse populations and from 0.01 to 0.44 in Hazel *** from a population of Chinese Grouse residing in the Qilian mountains and from the European populations of Hazel Grouse(including samples from Sweden,Germany and Northeast Poland)were the most inbred(FROH ranged from 0.10 to 0.23 and 0.11 to 0.44,respectively).These levels are comparable to other highly inbred populations of *** Grouse from northern China and Chinese Grouse residing in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau showed relatively lower inbreeding *** of the ratio between deleterious missense mutations and synonymous mutations revealed higher levels in Chinese Grouse as compared to Hazel *** results are possibly explained by higher fixation rates,mutational melt down,in the range-restricted Chinese Grouse compared to the wide-ranging Hazel ***,when we compared the relatively more severe class of loss-of-function muta-tions,Hazel Grouse had slightly higher levels than Chinese Grouse,a result which may indicate that purifying selection(purging)has been more efficient in Chinese Grouse on this class of mutations.

Triassic (Anisian and Rhaetian) palaeomagnetic poles from the Germanic Basin (Winterswijk, the Netherlands)

In this paper,we provide two new Triassic palaeomagnetic poles from Winterswijk,the Netherlands,in the stable interior of the Eurasian *** were respectively collected from the Anisian(~247–242 Ma)red marly limestones of the sedimentary transition of the Buntsandstein Formation to the dark grey limestones of the basal Muschelkalk Formation,and from the Rhaetian(~208–201 Ma)shallow marine claystones that unconformably overlie the Muschelkalk *** magnetization is carried by hematite or magnetite in the Anisian limestones,and iron sulfides and magnetite in the Rhaetian sedimentary rocks,revealing for both a large normal polarity overprint with a recent(geocentric axial dipole field)direction at the present latitude of the *** field and thermal demagnetization occasionally reveal a stable magnetization decaying towards the origin,interpreted as the Characteristic Remanent *** we find a pervasive(normal polarity)overprint,we can often still determine well-defined great-circle *** interpreted palaeomagnetic poles include the great-circle *** Anisian magnetic pole has declination d±Δdx=210.8±3.0°,inclination I±ΔIx=-26.7±4.9°,with a latitude,longitude of 45.0°,142.0°respectively,K=43.9,A95=2.9°,N=*** Rhaetian magnetic pole has declination d±Δdx=32.0±8.7°,inclination I±ΔIx=50.9±8.1°,with a latitude,longitude of 60.6°,123.9°respectively,K=19.3,A95=7.4°,N=*** poles plot close to the predicted location of global apparent polar wander paths(GAPWa Ps)in Eurasian coordinates and are feasible for future apparent polar wander path *** confirm that the intracontinental,shallow-marine Germanic Basin,in which the Muschelkalk Formation was deposited,existed at a palaeolatitude of 14.1°[11.3,17.1]N,in a palaeo-environment reminding of the Persian Gulf *** Rhaetian times,palaeolatitudes of 31.6°[24.8,39.8]N were reached,on its way to the modern latitude of 52°N.

Numerical simulation of precipitation kinetics in multicomponent alloys

A universal numerical model based on the particle size distribution(PSd)approach has been developed for the simulation of precipitation kinetics in multicomponent alloys during isothermal *** was implemented utilizing the classical nucleation theory(CNT).Growth and coarsening were modeled by a single growth kinetics equation,which is constructed based on the interfacial diffusion flux balance and the capillarity *** partial off-diagonal terms in the diffusion matrix(diffusion of individual components in the matrix)were taken into account in the calculations to minimize the computational cost while coupling with CALPHAd to extract thermodynamics equilibrium around the interface.A new feature of the model is the incorporation of a more realistic spatial site distribution via a Voronoi construction in the characteristic cell,for the purpose of modifying the diffusion *** predictions of the precipitate dimensions and the precipitation kinetics were compared with the atom probe tomography(APT)measurements on ternary Ni-Al-Cr alloys isothermally aged at 873 *** is found that the temporal evolution of the dimensions and composition of the precipitates is well captured,as is the dependence on changes in the alloy *** new modification with Voronoi construction demonstrates that the overall precipitation kinetics depends on the density and the spatial site distribution of *** ability to handle sophisticated alloy chemistries by quantitative equations,the compositional sensitivity of microstructural characteristics emerging from the simulation results,and the ability to visualize the spatial distribution of precipitates make the work very promising for multicomponent alloy design and optimization.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
