Recent advances in laser self-injection locking to high-Q microresonators

The stabilization and manipulation of laser frequency by means of an external cavity are nearly ubiquitously used in fundamental research and laser applications. While most of the laser light transmits through the cavity, in the presence of some back-scattered light from the cavity to the laser, the self-injection locking effect can take place, which locks the laser emission frequency to the cavity mode of similar frequency. The self-injection locking leads to dramatic reduction of laser linewidth and noise. Using this approach, a common semiconductor laser locked to an ultrahigh-Q microresonator can obtain sub-Hertz linewidth, on par with state-of-the-art fiber lasers. Therefore it paves the way to manufacture high-performance semiconductor lasers with reduced footprint and cost. Moreover, with high laser power, the optical nonlinearity of the microresonator drastically changes the laser dynamics, offering routes for simultaneous pulse and frequency comb generation in the same microresonator. Particularly, integrated photonics technology, enabling components fabricated via semiconductor CMOS process, has brought increasing and extending interest to laser manufacturing using this method. In this article, we present a comprehensive tutorial on analytical and numerical methods of laser self-injection locking, as well a review of most recent theoretical and experimental achievements.

We discuss a possible interpretation of the open charm mesons D＊s0 （2317）,D s1 （2460） and the hidden charm mesons X（3872）,Y（3940） and Y（4140） as hadron *** a phenomenological Lagrangian approach we review the strong and radiative decays of the D＊ s0 （2317） and D s1 （2460） *** X（3872） is assumed to consist dominantly of molecular hadronic components with an additional small admixture of a charmonium *** the radiative （γJ/ψ and γψ（2s）） and strong （J/ψ2π and J/ψ3π） decay modes we show that the present experimental observation is consistent with the molecular structure assumption of the X（3872）.Finally,we give evidence for molecular interpretations of the Y（3940） and Y（4140） related to the observed strong decay modes J/ψ＋ω or J/ψ＋φ,respectively.

Advances in small animal mesentery models for in vivo flow cytometry,dynamic microscopy,and drug screening

Using animal mesentery with intravital optical microscopy is a well-established experimental model for studying blood and lymph microcirculation in vivo. Recent advances in cell biology and optical techniques provide the basis for extending this model for new applications, which should generate significantly improved experimental data. This review summarizes the achievements in this specific area, including in vivo label-free blood and lymph photothermal flow cytometry, super-sensitive fluorescence image cytometry, light scattering and speckle flow cytometry, microvessel dynamic microscopy, infrared (IR) angiography, and high-speed imaging of individual cells in fast flow. The capabilities of these techniques, using the rat mesentery model, were demonstrated in various studies; e.g., real-time quantitative detection of circulating and migrating individual blood and cancer cells, studies on vascular dynamics with a focus on lymphatics under normal conditions and under different interventions (e.g. lasers, drugs, nicotine), assessment of lymphatic disturbances from experimental lymphedema, monitoring cell traffic between blood and lymph systems, and high-speed imaging of cell transient deformability in flow. In particular, the obtained results demonstrated that individual cell transportation in living organisms depends on cell type (e.g., normal blood or leukemic cells), the cell’s functional state (e.g., live, apoptotic, or necrotic), and the functional status of the organism. Possible future applications, including in vivo early diagnosis and prevention of disease, monitoring immune response and apoptosis, chemo- and radio-sensitivity tests, and drug screening, are also discussed.

Benefits of heterospecific aggregation on necromass: in fluence of temperature, group density, and compositi on on fitness-related traits

Necrophagous blowflies(Diptera:Calliphoridae)such as Calliphora vicina,a cold-tolerant species,and L ucilia serie ata,a warm-adapted species,are pioneer carrion・*** these two species have different temperature preferences,larvae aggregate actively and often feed simultaneously on *** hypothesis to be tested was that *** benefits from the association with *** at lower temperatures(i.e.,15℃)and that *** derives greater benefits from this association at higher temperatures(i.e.,28℃).Therefore,both species were raised at these two constant temperatures from first instars to adults under three different conditions:monospecific low-density,monospecific high-density,and heterospecific *** time until larval migration,surface area of puparia,and survival rates were determined for each *** between these fitness-related traits were found between species,temperatures,group densities,and species *** 28°C,*** larvae bred in heterospecific groups migrated significantly earlier and in higher numbers than that under same density conspecific con・ditions,with a lower mortality *** 15°C,both species benefited from high-density heterospecific associations,expressed by faster development and larger *** conclusion,necrophagous larvae benefited from heterospecific aggregations at suboptima 1 temperatures by adapting their migration time to that of the faster *** temperature changes throughout the day and over the year,the beneficiary of such a collective association also *** costs involved and deviations to the temperature-size rule highlight the complexity of the carrion ecosystem.

Two types of systems and three types of paradigms in systems philosophy and system science

Now it is evident that nature and society have a great number of special systems which very differ from traditional objects (systems) of physics, chemists and engineering. For such special (synergetic-chaotic) systems we are proposed the special third paradigm and construct five basic properties of (unique) systems and on 13 differences in the methods, basic concepts about such systems. The introduction of such basic properties and differences are presented in the article. We postulate the humanity evolution, dynamic of social and political systems, biosphere of earth, the human organism and his functional systems and many other systems (Universe at all) have all five such properties and must be described according to special synergetic paradigm. Now the authors presents all these special properties and the special table where the differences between deterministic-stochastic systems (and its theoretical approaches) and the synergetic systems (complexity, self-organization systems) were presented more conveniently.

Fuel characteristics, loads and consumption in Scots pine forests of central Siberia

Forest fuel investigations in central and southern Siberian taiga of Scots pine forest stands dominated by lichen and feather moss ground vegetation cover revealed that total aboveground biomass varied from 13.1 to 21.0 kg/m *** biomass was higher in plots in the southern taiga,while ground fuel loads were higher in the central *** developed equations for fuel biomass(both aerial and ground)that could be applicable to similar pine forest sites of Central *** loading variability found among plots is related to the impact and recovery time since the last wildfi re and the mosaic distribution of living *** consumption due to surface fi res of low to high-intensities ranged from 0.95 to 3.08 kg/m 2,that is,18–74%from prefi re *** total amount of fuels available to burn in case of fi re was up to 4.5–6.5 kg/m *** content of fuels(litter,lichen,feather moss)was related to weather conditions characterized by the Russian Fire Danger Index(PV-1)and FWI code of the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index *** data obtained provide a strong foundation for understanding and modeling fi re behavior,emissions,and fi re eff ects on ecosystem processes and carbon stocks and could be used to improve existing global and regional models that incorporate biomass and fuel characteristics.
