Crohn's disease environmental factors in the developing world: A case-control study in a statewide catchment area in Brazil

To identify environmental risk factors associated with the development of Crohn’s disease (CD) in order to re-assess the hygiene hypothesis. METHODSA hospital-based, case-control study was carried out with CD patients (n = 145) and controls (n = 163) representing a socioeconomically diverse statewide catchment area in Brazil. Controls were recruited from caregivers of patients seen in different outpatient clinics at the same hospital. A multi-item survey with 94 questions regarding family history of CD, perinatal and childhood circumstances, living conditions, tobacco use and familial socioeconomic status was carried out by interviewers. RESULTSOn the univariate analysis, predictive variables for CD included being male, under age of 40, a high education level, urban dweller, smaller family size, exposure to enteric pathogens and user of treated water (P riate analysis, variables significantly associated with CD were male gender (OR = 2.09), under age 40 (OR = 3.10), white (OR = 2.32), from a small family in childhood (OR = 2.34) and adulthood (OR = 3.02), absence of viral infections in childhood (OR = 2.23), exposure to enteric pathogens (OR = 2.41), having had an appendectomy (OR = 2.47) and prior or current smoker (OR = 2.83/1.12). CONCLUSIONMost variables supporting the “hygiene hypothesis” are associated with the development of CD but are not independent predictors of the diagnosis.

BACKGROUND The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is unknown,but it is believed to be *** hygiene hypothesis proposes that better hygiene conditions would lead to less infectious disease during childhood and favor the development of immune-mediated *** To test the hygiene hypothesis in IBD by assessing the environmental risk factors associated with IBD development in different regions of Brazil with diverse socioeconomic development *** A multicenter case-control study was carried out with 548 Crohn’s disease(CD)and 492 ulcerative colitis(UC)outpatients and 416 healthy controls,from six IBD centers within different Brazilian states at diverse socioeconomic development stages.A semi-structured questionnaire with 87 socioeconomic and environmental questions was *** regression model was created to assess the odds ratio(OR)with P value and 95%confidence intervals(CI).RESULTS Predictive variables for both diseases(CD and UC)were women[odd ratios(OR)=1.31;OR=1.69],low monthly family income(OR=1.78;OR=1.57),lower number of cohabitants(OR=1.70;OR=1.60),absence of vaccination(OR=3.11;OR=2.51),previous history of bowel infections(OR=1.78;OR=1.49),and family history of IBD(OR=5.26;OR=3.33).Associated risk factors for CD were age(18-39 years)(OR=1.73),higher educational level(OR=2.22),absence of infectious childhood diseases(OR=1.99).The UC predictive variables were living in an urban area(OR=1.62),inadequate living conditions(OR=1.48)and former smokers(OR=3.36).Appendectomy was a risk factor for CD(OR=1.58)with inverse association with UC(OR=4.79).Consumption of treated and untreated water was associated with risk of CD(OR=1.38)and UC(OR=1.53),*** This is the first examining environmental exposures as risk factors for inflammatory bowel disease in *** of the variables associated with disease risk support the role of the hygiene hypothesis in IBD development.

A novel and rapid microbiological assay for ciprofoxacin hydrochloride

The present work reports a simple, fast and sensitive microbiological assay applying the turbidimetric method for the determination of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride （CIPRO HC1） in ophthalmic solutions. The validation method yielded good results and included excellent linearity, precision, accuracy and specificity. The bioassay is based on the inhibitory effect of CIPRO HC1 upon the strain of Staphylococcus epMermidis ATCC 12228 used as the test microorganism. The results were ar, ated statistically by analysis of variance （ANOVA） and were found to be linear （r=0.9994, in the range of 14.0-56.0 lag/mL）, precise （intraday RSD %=2.06; interday RSD%=2.30） and accurate （recovery = 99.7%）. The turbidimeaic assay was compared to the UV spectrophotometric and I-IPIX2 methods for the same drug. The tuIbidimetric bioassay described on this paper for determination of ciprofioxacin hydrochloride in ophthalmic solution is an alternative to the physicochemical methods disclosed in the literature and can be used in quality control routine.

Dynamics of canopy-dwelling arthropods under different weed management options,including glyphosate,in conventional and genetically modified insect-resistant maize

Extreme drought events are expected to be one of the main challenges for tropical agriculture and,consequently,for global food *** this reason,it is urgent to develop strategies to increase water use efficiency,as well as to increase crops’ ability to cope with *** rare earth elements(REEs) are known to alleviate damages in plants under abiotic stresses,we hypothesized that addition of Ce^3+to nutrient solution would promote the growth of common bean,especially under simulated drought *** test this hypothesis,we conducted an experiment evaluating the effect of six Ce^3+concentrations on the development and physiological traits of common bean grown in nutrient solution under normal condition and under induced drought stress,caused by the addition of polyethylene glycol6000 to the nutrient *** results show that Ce^3+alleviates water stress in common bean plants,increasing their survival rate and *** addition,Ce^3+application increases photosynthesis rate,chlorophyll content and water use efficiency under water ***,we observe no significant effect of Ce^3+on plants growing under normal ***,Ce3+seems to be a promising attenuator of drought stress for common bean.

The B1 dam of Co rrego do Feij～ao Mine, owned by vale, S.A. mining company and located on the FerroCarv～ao stream, collapsed and injected 2.8 Mm3of clayey, silty, and sandy iron-and manganese-rich tailings into the Paraopeba River(Minas Gerais state, Brazil). The accident occurred on 25 January2019 and the tailings have been co-transported with coarser natural sediment since then, being partly trapped in the Igarape Weir reservoir located on the Paraopeba River nearly 45 km downstream the injection point. The general purpose of the current study was to model suspended sediment transport in the vicinity of the Igarape Weir aiming to assess the concomitant barrier effect imposed by this ***, the spatial distributions of suspended clay, silt, and very fine-grained sand fractions(CSS) of sediment were mapped around the Igarape Weir under low-flow(16 m3/s) and high-flow(5 to 10,000years return period stream discharge; 699—2,699 m3/s) regimes, using RiverFlow2D as the modelling tool. The concentrations of the various grain materials in the upstream and downstream sectors were quantified linking the barrier effect to concentration reductions in the direction of stream flow. It was also a study goal to calculate differences of iron and manganese concentrations in the sediment + tailings mixtures along the Paraopeba River. The study results showed reductions in the CSS between 6.6% and18%, from upstream to downstream of the Igarape Weir, related with backwater effects, free and submerged hydraulic jumps, bank sedimentation in periods of high flow, and streambed sedimentation controlled by channel sinuosity and tailings density. These reductions were accompanied by drops in the concentrations of iron and manganese present in the clay and silt fractions, which varied between 6% and42% under low flows and between 16% and 44% under high flows. The recover from the excision in head and neck of femoral after therapy with low level laser

Degenerative articulate diseases, resulting from dysplasia and aseptic necrosis of the femoral head and neck, chronic dislocation of the femur and osteoarthrosis, are often treated surgically by an excision in the femoral head and neck. This procedure entails the formation of a false fibrous articulation, providing pain relief. The action of low level laser therapy (LLLT) has been described in orthopedic applications, to repair both bone and articular tissue. LLLT has demonstrated favorable results in vitro and in vivo in stimulating bone repair. A diode laser, 650 nm, with a potency of 30 mW, was used trans-surgically to irradiate. A diode laser (780 nm and the potency of 40 mW) was used on the skin for post-surgery applications. For the experiment, 10 clinically normal New Zealander rabbits underwent surgery and were then divided into two groups, one submitted to irradiation and the other kept for sham. Fifteen days after the surgery, samples of the newly formed tissue were collected from both groups, for macroscopic evaluation of the fibrous pseudo-articulation forming process on the irradiated and sham groups. The macroscopic and microscopic appearance of the samples, suggest that the utilization of the LLLT in the formation of fibrous pseudo-articulation was effective in accelerating the cicatrization process and in improving the quality of the formed tissue.

Epidemiological Profile of Breast Neoplasia in the Municipality of valença (RJ Brazil): Study from 2009 to 2017

Breast neoplasms are the main oncological pathology in Gynecology and Obstetrics, with increasing rates of incidence and mortality in the female population. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1 million new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed worldwide every year. This study aims to understand and analyze the epidemiological profile of patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the last nine years in the city of valença—RJ, Brazil. A descriptive, documentary-retrospective analysis was carried out from January 2009 to December 2017, on 96 records of women who underwent breast biopsy at the Escola Escola de valença (HEV), referred by the HEV Gynecology outpatient clinic. The results compared the variables age, race, parity, alcoholism, smoking, comorbidities, histological type, family history and screening performed with the scenario of breast cancer in the world, concluding that it is essential to identify patients at risk development of breast cancer to guide prevention, screening and early detection of pathology. The cases in the municipality are similar to other studies in relation to smoking, alcohol consumption, associated comorbidities, histological type and family history. However, the prevalence in younger people stands out, as well as the high percentage of women who have not had previous screening, which highlights the importance of the development and spread of women’s health in this city in the south of the state.
