Analysis of interrelationship between pedestrian flow parameters using artificial neural network

Pedestrian flow parameters are analysed in this study considering linear and non-linear relationships between stream flow parameters using conventional and soft computing approach. Speed-density relationship serves as a fundamental relationship, Single-regime con- cepts and deterministic models like Greenshield and Underwood were applied in the study to describe bidirec- tional flow characteristics on sidewalks and carriageways around transport terminals in India. Artificial Neural Net- work （ANN） approach is also used for traffic flow mod- elling to build a relationship between different pedestrian flow parameters. A non-linear model based on ANN is suggested and compared with the other deterministic models. Out of the aforesaid models, ANN model demonstrated good results based on accuracy measure- ment. Also these ANN models have an advantage in terms of their self-processing and intelligent behaviour. Flow parameters are estimated by ANN model using MFD （Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram）. Estimated mean absolute error （MAE） and root mean square error （RMSE）values for the best fitted ANN model are 3.83 and 4.73 m/ min, respectively, less than those for the other models for sidewalk movement. Further estimated MAE and RMSE values of ANN model for carriageway movement are 4.02 and 4.98 m/min, respectively, which are comparatively less than those of the other models. ANN model gives better performance in fitness of model and future prediction of flow parameters. Also when using linear regression model between observed and estimated values for speed and flow parameters, performance of ANN model gives better fitness to predict data as compared to deterministic model. R value for speed data prediction is 0.756 and for flow data pre- diction is 0.997 using ANN model at sidewalk movement around transport terminal.

In Silico Characterization and Homology Modeling of Thylakoidbound Ascorbate Peroxidase from a Drought Tolerant Wheat Cultivar

Ascorbate peroxidase, a haem protein （EC 1.***.1.11）, efficiently scavenges hydrogen peroxide （H2O2） in cytosol and chloroplasts of plants. In this study, a fulllength coding sequence of thylakoid-bound ascorbate peroxidase cDNA （TatAPX） was cloned from a drought tolerant wheat cultivar C306. Homology modeling of the TatAPX protein was performed by using the template crystal structure of chloroplastic ascorbate peroxidase from tobacco plant （PDB： IIYN）. The model structure was further refined by molecular mechanics and dynamic methods using various tools such as PROCHECk, ProSA and verify3D. The predicted model was then tested for docking with H2O2, the substrate for TatAPX enzyme. The results revealed that Arg233 and Glu255 in the predicted active site of the enzyme are two important amino acid residues responsible for strong hydrogen bonding affinity with H2O2, which might play an important role in scavenging of H2O2 from the plant system.

We show the ability to map the phase diagram of a relaxor-ferroelectric system as a function of temperature and composition through local hysteresis curve acquisition,with the voltage spectroscopy data being used as a proxy for the(unknown)microscopic state or thermodynamic parameters of *** the discrete nature of the measurement points,we use Gaussian processes to reconstruct hysteresis loops in temperature and voltage space,and compare the results with the raw data and bulk dielectric spectroscopy *** results indicate that the surface transition temperature is similar for all but one composition with respect to the *** clustering algorithms,we recreate the main features of the bulk diagram,and provide statistical confidence estimates for the reconstructed phase transition *** validate the method by using Gaussian processes to predict hysteresis loops for a given temperature for a composition unseen by the algorithm,and compare with *** techniques can be used to map phase diagrams from functional materials in an automated fashion,and provide a method for uncertainty quantification and model selection.

Effects of first-order chemical reactions on the dispersion coefficient associated with laminar flow through the lungs

This paper aims to look into the determination of effective area-average concentration and dispersion coefficient associated with unsteady flow through a small-diameter tube where a solute undergoes first-order chemical reaction both within the fluid and at the boundary. The reaction consists of a reversible component due to phase exchange between the flowing fluid and the wall layer, and an irreversible component due to absorption into the wall. To understand the dispersion, the governing equations along with the reactive boundary conditions are solved numerically using the Finite Difference Method. The resultant equation shows how the dispersion coefficient is influenced by the first-order chemical reaction. The effects of various dimensionless parameters e.g. Da （the Damkohler number）, a （phase partitioning number） and F （dimensionless absorption number） on dispersion are discussed. One of the results exposes that the dispersion coefficient may approach its steady-state limit in a short time at a high value of Damkohler number （say Da 〉 10） and a small but nonzero value of absorption rate （say P 〈0.5）.

A tissue-engineered rostral migratory stream for directed neuronal replacement

New neurons are integrated into the circuitry of the olfactory bulb throughout the lifespan in the mamma- lian brain--including in humans. These new neurons are born in the subventricular zone and subsequently mature as they are guided over long distances via the rostral migratory stream through mechanisms we are only just beginning to understand. Regeneration after brain injury is very limited, and although some neuroblasts from the rostral migratory stream will leave the path and migrate toward cortical lesion sites, this neuronal replacement is generally not sustained and therefore does not provide enough new neurons to alleviate functional deficits. Using newly discovered microtissue engineering techniques, we have built the first self-contained, implantable constructs that mimic the architecture and function of the rostral migratory stream. This engineered microtissue emulates the dense cord-like bundles of astrocytic somata and processes that are the hallmark anatomical feature of the glial tube. As such, our living microtissue-en- gineered rostral migratory stream can serve as an in vitro test bed for unlocking the secrets of neuroblast migration and maturation, and may potentially serve as a living transplantable construct derived from a patient＇s own cells that can redirect their own neuroblasts into lesion sites for sustained neuronal replace- ment following brain injury or neurodegenerative disease. In this paper, we summarize the development of fabrication methods for this microtissue-engineered rostral migratory stream and provide proof-of-princi- ple evidence that it promotes and directs migration of immature neurons.

Isolation of enriched-yielders and fed-batch production of alkaline protease from the newly isolated <i>Bacillus</i>sp. BHA

An alkalophilc and thermophilic Bacillus sp. BHA that produced a thermostable alkaline protease was isolated from decaying protein substrates. The isolate was found to grow in pH range 7 - 11 with an optimum pH 9.0 and temperature up to 55℃. The activity of alkaline protease of Bacillus sp. BHA (68.98 APU/ml) was found higher than the standard strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 610 (8.98 APU/ml) and Bacillus subtilis MTCC 8349 (12.14 APU/ml, used in this study, and was comparable (68.98 APU/ml, equivalent to 30.38 APU/mg) to the activity of the commercially produced standard protease procured from Novo Nordisk, Denmark (30.35 APU/mg). Hence, the proteolytic activity produced by this isolate was further investigated in batch and fed-batch process. Sucrose was the best carbon source for the production of protease activity by that isolate. Different organic nitrogen sources (casein, peptone and beef extract) at 1% (w/v) with varying levels of sucrose (1% - 4% w/v) initially repress enzyme synthesis. The duration and extent of repression decreased with increased concentration of sucrose. Maximum protease activity was found in basal medium with 4% (w/v) sucrose and 1% (w/v) yeast extract. Yeast-extract was thought to be an inducer of enzyme synthesis. Further, the basal medium was unique with respect to the enzyme production, as protease production was growth associated with the peak enzyme production being detected at the time of maximum growth. Interestingly, a rise in 34.2% (104.86 APU/ml) of protease activity was detected at incubation temperature of 50℃ and when culture filtrate was assayed at 60℃, signifying a high temperature stability of the produced protease by this isolate. Additional studies on the enzyme characterization were resulted in recognition of highly significant properties of the activity towards casein at pH 9.0 and stability at high temperature with retention of 96% the enzyme activity at 60℃.
