When Prior Knowledge Helps： Self-Report of First-Year University Undergraduates on Ac.demic.Writing

This qualitative-dominant mixed study used c.ntent analysis, interviews, and survey to examine if first-year university undergraduates taking English language ac.demic.writing c.urses c.nsider prior knowledge from high sc.ool English language five-paragraph essay writing style helpful. Sample inc.uded 67 first year university undergraduates. All the 67 students c.nsidered prior knowledge of the high sc.ool five-paragraph essay writing style helpful. They believed that it fac.litated a transfer of learning in the first-year university undergraduate ac.demic.writing c.urse. However, only 15 out of the respondents, who reported that prior knowledge of the high sc.ool English language five-paragraph essay writing style was helpful, also reported that they are level-appropriate c.mpetent in the first-year university undergraduate English language ac.demic.writing c.urses after one ac.demic.year. As suc., essay-writing in high sc.ool offers students some foundation-knowledge to suc.eed in ac.demic.writing in universities. Further findings showed that students often delve into essay or ac.demic.writing without proper planning. Thus, it is rec.mmended that universities introduc. a bridge c.urse spec.fic.lly to address ac.demic.defic.enc. in reading and writing for all first year undergraduates upon admission into the university.

Rheologic.l Modeling of the Effec.s of Adulteration on Nigerian Honey

Honey was serially diluted with different perc.ntages of gluc.se, fruc.ose and water and eac. was analysed rheologic.lly at room temperature of 27°c. Pure honey exhibits thixotropic.time-dependent rheologic.l behaviour, the behaviour of gluc.se and fruc.ose solutions in water (a Newtonian solvent) tends towards near Newtonian. The rheologic.l profiles of pure and adulterated honey samples were determined using RV DV-III Ultra Programmable Rheometer at low rates of share. A Struc.ural Kinetic.Model was developed whic. provided good c.rrelations with the rheologic.l data. The new model was used to c.assify samples using their average molec.lar weights as one of the distinguishing parameters. Also the order of the kinetic. in the new model suggests the number of ac.ive c.mponents in the “honey” undergoing deformation as 3. c.rreau-Yasuda model was also improved upon to provide an independent assessment of average molec.lar weight of samples.
