Maximizing NO3 up.ake during seedling develop.ent is imp.rtant as it has a major influence on p.ant growth and yield. However, little is known about the p.ocesses leading to, and involved in, the initiation of root NO3 up.ake cap.city in develop.ng seedlings. This study examines the p.ysiological p.ocesses involved in root NO3 up.ake and metabolism, to gain an understanding of how the NO3 up.ake system resp.nds to meet demand as maize seedlings transition from seed N use to external N cap.ure. The concentrations of seedderived free amino acids within root and shoot tissues are initially high, but decrease rap.dly until stabilizing eight days after imbibition （DAI）. Similarly, shoot N% decreases, but does not stabilize until 12-13 DAI. Following the decrease in free amino acid concentrations, root NO3- up.ake cap.city increases until shoot N% stabilizes. The increase in root NO3 up.ake cap.city corresp.nds with a rap.d rise in transcrip. levels of p.tative NO3 transp.rters, ZmNRT2.1 and ZmNRT2.2. The p.ocesses underlying the increase in root NO3- up.ake cap.city to meet N demand p.ovide an insight into the p.ocesses controlling N up.ake.

Exact Statistical Distribution of the Body Mass Index (BMI): Analysis and Exp.rimental Confirmation

Body Mass Index (BMI), defined as the ratio of individual mass (in kilograms) to the square of the associated height (in meters), is one of the most widely discussed and utilized risk factors in medicine and p.blic health, given the increasing obesity worldwide and its relation to metabolic disease. Statistically, BMI is a comp.site random variable, since human weight (converted to mass) and height are themselves random variables. Much effort over the years has gone into attemp.s to model or ap.roximate the BMI distribution function. This p.p.r derives the mathematically exact BMI p.obability density function (p.F), as well as the exact bivariate p.F for human weight and height. Taken together, weight and height are shown to be correlated bivariate lognormal variables whose marginal distributions are each lognormal in form. The mean and variance of each marginal distribution, together with the linear correlation coefficient of the two distributions, p.ovide 5 nonadjustable p.rameters for a given p.p.lation that uniquely determine the corresp.nding BMI distribution, which is also shown to be lognormal in form. The theoretical analysis is tested exp.rimentally by gender against a large anthrop.metric data base, and found to p.edict with near p.rfection the p.ofile of the emp.rical BMI distribution and, to great accuracy, individual statistics including mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis, and correlation. Beyond solving a longstanding statistical p.oblem, the significance of these findings is that, with knowledge of the exact BMI distribution functions for diverse p.p.lations, medical and p.blic health p.ofessionals can then make better informed statistical inferences regarding BMI and p.blic health p.licies to reduce obesity.

First Record of a Tylosaurine Mosasaur from the Latest Cretaceous p.osp.ates of Morocco

The latest Cretaceous p.osp.ates of Morocco p.eserve the highest biodiversity of mosasaurid squamates anywhere in the world. Intensive samp.ing over the p.st century has uncovered at least ten genera and thirteen sp.cies from the mosasaur subgroup. Halisauromorp.a, p.iop.atecarp.nae, and Mosasaurinae. Notably missing from the assemblage are members of the macrop.edatory Tylosaurinae. The Tylosaurinae were globally rare in the Maastrichtian and their ap.arent absence has been p.eviously exp.ained by either collecting bias, ecological p.eference for deep.r waters, or habitat restriction to higher p.leolatitudes. Here, we describe a new tylosaurine mosasaurid, Hainosaurus boubker sp. nov., based on several p.rtial skulls and isolated teeth originating from the Couche III layer of the Sidi Chennane p.osp.ate quarry near Oued Zem, Morocco. It is unique amongst tylosaurine mosasaurids in p.ssessing blade-like teeth that are laterally comp.essed, encircled by enamel facets, and differentiated along the dental margin. The discovery of this new taxon in the Maastrichtian of Morocco is remarkable as it rep.esents both the youngest sp.cies of Tylosaurinae and the first occurrence in North Africa.

The exp.osion of interest in two-dimensional van der Waals materials has been in many ways driven by their layered geometry. This feature makes p.ssible numerous avenues for assembling and ma- nip.lating the op.ical and electronic p.op.rties of these materials. In the sp.cific case of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, the direct band gap.combined with the flexibility for manip.lation of layers has made this class of materials p.omising for op.oelectronics. Here, we review the p.op.rties of these layered materials and the various means of engineering these p.op.rties for op.oeleetronics. We summarize ap.roaches for control that modify their structural and chemical en- vironment, and we give p.rticular detail on the integration of these materials into engineered op.ical fields to control their op.ical characteristics. This combination of controllability from their layered surface structure and p.otonic environment p.ovide an exp.nsive landscap. for novel op.oelectronic p.enomena.

BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)rep.esents a growing p.blic health concern,with p.tients having higher risk of morbidity and *** has a considerably high p.evalence in the general p.p.lation,estimated 20%-40%in Europ.,and is asymp.omatic until late in the disease *** is therefore imp.rtant to identify and validate tools that p.edict hard outcomes such as mortality for use in clinical p.actice in risk-stratifying NAFLD *** To evaluate available evidence on the use of non-invasive test(s)as p.ognostic factors for mortality in *** We p.rformed electronic searches of Medline and EMBASE(Ovid)until 7^(th)January 2021 of studies in NAFLD *** markers included serum biomarkers,non-invasive scoring systems,and non-invasive *** p.p.lation included all sp.ctrums of disease severity,including NAFLD and non-alcoholic steatohep.titis(NASH).Outcomes included all-cause,and cardiovascular *** non-invasive tests were synthesised in a narrative systematic ***,we conducted a meta-analysis of non-invasive scoring systems for p.edicting all-cause and cardiovascular mortality,calculating p.oled hazard ratios and 95%confidence(STATA 16.1).RESULTS Database searches identified 2850 studies-24 were included.16 studies rep.rted non-invasive scoring systems,10 studies rep.rted individual biomarkers,and 1 study rep.rted imaging modalities.4 studies on non-invasive scoring systems(6324 p.rticip.nts)had data available for inclusion in the *** non-invasive scoring system that p.rformed best at p.edicting all-cause mortality was NAFLD fibrosis score(NFS)[p.R 3.07(1.62-5.83)],followed by fibrosis-4 index[p.R 3.06(1.54-6.07)],BARD[p.R 2.87(1.27-6.46)],and AST to p.atelet ratio index[p.R 1.90(1.32-2.73)].NFS was also p.ognostic of cardiovascular-related mortality[p.R 3.09(1.78-5.34)].CONCLUSION This study reaffirms that non-invasive scoring systems,esp.cially NFS,are reliable p.ognostic mark

Greenstone belts contain several clues about the evolutionary history of p.imitive ***,we describe the volcano-sedimentary rock association exp.sed along the eastern margin of the Gavião Block,named the Northern Mundo Novo Greenstone Belt(N-MNGB),and p.esent data collected with different techniques,including U–p.–Hf–O isotop.s of zircon and multip.e sulfur isotop.s(^(32)S,^(33)S,^(34)S,and ^(36)S)of p.rite from this sup.acrustal sequence.A p.llowed metabasalt situated in the up.er section of the N-MNGB is 3337±25 Ma old and has zircon with ε_(Hf)(t)=2.47 to1.40,Hf model ages between 3.75 Ga and 3.82 Ga,and δ^(18)O=+3.6‰to+7.3‰.These isotop.c data,together with comp.led whole-rock trace element data,suggest that the mafic metavolcanic rocks formed in a subduction-related setting,likely a back-arc basin juxtap.sed to a continental *** this context,the magma interacted with older Eoarchean crustal comp.nents from the Gavião *** zircons from the overlying quartzites of the Jacobina Group.are sourced from p.leoarchean rocks,in accordance with p.evious studies,yielding a maximum dep.sitional age of 3353±22 *** detrital zircons have ε_(Hf)(t)=5.40 to0.84,Hf model ages between 3.66 Ga and 4.30 Ga,and δ^(18)O=+4.8‰to+6.4‰.The p.rite multip.e sulfur isotop. investigation of the 3.3 Ga sup.acrustal rocks from the N-MNGB enabled a further understanding of p.leoarchean sulfur *** samp.es have diverse isotop.c comp.sitions that indicate sulfur sourced from distinct ***,they p.eserve the signal of the anoxic Archean atmosp.ere,exp.essed by MIF-S signatures(Δ^(33)S between1.3‰to+1.4‰)and a Δ^(36)S/Δ^(33)S slop. of0.81 that is indistinguishable from the so-called Archean array.A BIF samp.e has a magmatic origin of sulfur,as indicated by the limited Δ^(34)S range(0 to+2‰),Δ^(33)S~0‰,and Δ^(36)S~0‰.A carbonaceous schist shows p.sitive Δ^(34)S(2.1‰–3.5‰)and elevated Δ^(33)S(1.2‰–1.4‰)values,with corresp.nding negative Δ^(36)S
