Effects of Inhaled the Cyperi rhizoma and Perillae herba Essential Oil on Emotional States, Autonomic Nervous System and Salivary Biomarker

It is well-known that odor has a good influence on a human mind and body. In this study, we investigated the effect of the essential oil inhalation of Cyperi rhizoma and Perillae herba which were main aromatic herbs ingredient of the Kososan, to psychological condition, autonomic nerve activity and salivary biomarker. In addition, we examined influence by the favorite difference in odor. 25 healthy female volunteers (control group: 5 people;Cyperi rhizoma group: 10 people;Perillae herba group: 10 people) were examined. POMS was examined at PRE and POST the experiment. Pulse analyser was examined and saliva samples were collected before the inhalation, just after the inhalation, 10 minutes and 20 minutes later, respectively. Saliva samples analyzed for levels of α-amylase and cortisol. At the examination for POMS after the experiment, the preference for the odor was confirmed. About both Cyperi rhizoma and Perillae herba, by the essential oil inhalation, mental stability and relaxation effect were provided in psychological and psysiological evaluation. In the “like” group, relaxation was greater than “unlike” group. However, about Cyperi rhizoma, the stress was relaxed regardless of the favorite difference in odor, and a physical relaxation effect was shown. In addition, about the autonomic nerve activity, the parasympathetic nerve was not activated, and it was suggested that it was made and stabilized the balance of the autonomic nerve.

Copy number variations (CNVs) that are frequent in genome influence on susceptibility of various diseases including cancers. The present mini-review focuses on CNVs associated with susceptibility to the cancers. Since CNVs are different between cancer types, the analysis of the specific CNV makes it possible to estimate the susceptibility to the cancers of interest in individuals. Although it is true that available data on CNVs associated with cancer susceptibility are limited at present, accumulation of the data is accelerated with the research progression of CNVs in near future. Information on CNVs associated with cancer susceptibility is useful for not only cancer research but also personalized healthcare including cancer prevention.

Changes in Imja Lake and Karda Lake in the Everest Region of Himalaya

The Himalaya is a region sensitive to climate change. Changes in the glacial regime are one indicator of global climate changes. There are several studies focusing on analysis of temporal changes of these glacial lakes in the Himalaya region. However, the researches on addressing these trends in relation with surrounding topographical conditions are quite limited. In this study, we analyzed spatio-temporal changes in Imja Lake, located on the southern slope, and Karda Lake, located on the northern slope of the Mt. Everest region, in 1976, 1992, 2000, and 2008. Moreover, we examined whether the topographic conditions differ between the two slopes. Landsat and ASTER GDEM (advanced space borne thermal emission and reflection radiometer, global digital elevation model) data were used to identify boundaries of target glacial lakes and to calculate three indices of growth rate compared to year of 1976 (%, GRa), growth rate compared to preceding year (%, GRb), and growth speed (m2/year, GS) of the two lakes. The topographic conditions in circular buffer zones from the centroid of the two lakes were analyzed. Although the area of two lakes demonstrated linear increase from 1976 to 2008, growth rate compared to year of 1976 (GRa) differed significantly (Kruskal-Wallis test, p squared test for independence on m × n contingency table between 1976, 1992, 2000, and 2008 on growth speed (GS)). Effectiveness of ICU Diaries: Improving “Distorted Memories” Encountered during ICU Admission

Background: It is said that after ICU discharge, 40% of patients suffer from acute stress symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, caused by “distorted memories” (memory loss and delusions) due to various treatments in the ICU. This study focused on the quantitative and qualitative effects of ICU diaries on distorted memories that patients encountered during their time in the ICU. Aim: To assess improving distorted memories by providing information during ICU admission to patients to relieve the acute stress symptoms after ICU discharge. Design and Methods: This nonrandomized controlled trial included patients aged ≥20 years who had received treatment for ≥3 days in the ICU. Using ICU memory tool, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Acute Stress Disorder Scale (ASDS) approximately 1 week after ICU discharge, then HADS and ASDS prior to hospital discharge, the change in mean values were compared between two groups (control and intervention) using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The intervention group was surveyed prior to hospital discharge using semi-structured interviews, and descriptions were analyzed by the content analysis method of Krippendorff. Results: Twenty-three participants were included in the control group, and 17 in the intervention group. When comparing subjects with distorted memories between the groups, we found reduced values for HADS anxiety (7.1 ± 3.8 to 5.7 ± 2.7, p = 0.011), HADS depression (8.6 ± 5.0 to 7.2 ± 4.3, p = 0.003), and ASDS (46.9 ± 13.8 to 43.8 ± 11.4, p = 0.012) in the intervention group. Based on the narrations, patients wanted to investigate facts in the ICU diary while having someone help them to remember these events. Conclusion: Improving distorted memories during ICU admissions may relieve acute stress symptoms. In addition, these patients needed someone to investigate facts from the ICU admission.

MODIS数据在当今的森林火灾监测中得到了广泛的应用,其用途大多是用来监测林火和研究林火对大气环境所产生的影响等等。而森林火灾在其燃烧的过程中是有着不同的类别,如暗火、明火、过火、火烧迹地等,不同的林火类别在其亮温上的表现是不同的。但是仅凭借亮温是不能够准确的识别林火燃烧过程的类别,还需要有植被信息来加以判读。本文对林火燃烧的过程分了五类,即明火、暗火、过火、火烧迹地和非燃地区,选取了俄罗斯远东地区的林区,利用MODIS数据的CH21和CH31热红外波段,对林火在燃烧过程中亮温数值的变化进行研究,并与植被指数和多时相数据相结合进行综合分析,最后采用监督分类和决策树分类方法进行解译分类,以便更好的辨别森林火灾在燃烧过程中的不同阶段,使其能够快速、有效的对森林火灾进行监测和控制。

An Anionic Polymer Incorporating Low Amounts of Hydrophobic Residues Is a Multifunctional Surfactant. Part 1: Emulsifying, Thickening,Moisture-Absorption and Moisture-Retention Abilities of a FattyAcid-Containing Anionic Polysaccharide

We have been studying the function and structure of fatty acid-containing extracellular polysaccharides (FACEPS) produced by bacteria belonging to the genus Rhodococcus. In this study, we examined the relationships between the structure and emulsifying, thickening, moisture-absorption, and moisture-retention capabilities of rhodococcal FACEPS using S-2 EPS produced by R. rhodochrous strain S-2. We prepared chemically deacylated S-2 EPS (DeAcyl S-2 EPS) and palmitoylated DeAcyl S-2 EPS (ReAcyl S-2 EPS), and compared them with native S-2 EPS. All of the properties were attenuated and recovered by deacylation and reacylation of S-2 EPS, respectively. These results suggest that the fatty acid moiety of rhodococcal FACEPS is involved in such functional properties. We also showed that palmitoylation improved the emulsifying, moisture-ab-sorption, and moisture-retention abilities of other acidic polysaccharides that are commercially available. These results suggest that the acidity of the polysaccharide backbone is at least partly responsible for the observed functionality of fatty acid-containing polysaccharides. To our knowledge, this is the first report on multifunctional property of an anionic polymer incorporating low amounts of hydrophobic residues. The present findings could be useful for the creation of new multifunctional surfactants from renewable raw materials for use in various industries, e.g., in cosmetics.

Thellungiella salsuginea （formerly T. halophila）, a species closely related to Arabidopsis （Arabidopsis thali-ana）, is tolerant not only to high salt levels, but also to chilling, freezing, and ozone. Here, we report that T. salsuginea also shows greater heat tolerance than Arabidopsis. We identified T. salsuginea HsfAld （TsHsfAld） as a gene that can confer marked heat tolerance on Arabidopsis. TsHsfAld was identified via Full-length cDNA Over-eXpressing gene （FOX） hunt-ing from among a collection of heat-stress-related T. salsuginea cDNAs. Transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing TsHsfAld showed constitutive up-regulation of many genes in the Arabidopsis AtHsfA1 regulon under normal growth tempera-ture. in Arabidopsis mesophyll protoplasts, TsHsfAld was localized in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm. TsHsfAld also interacted with AtHSP90, which negatively regulates AtHsfAls by forming HsfA1-HSP90 complexes in the cytoplasm. It is likely that the partial nuclear localization of TsHsfAld induced the expression of the AtHsfAld regulon in the transgenic plants at normal temperature. We also discovered that transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing AtHsfAldwere more heat-tolerant than wild-type plants and up-regulated the expression of the HsfAld regulon, as was observed in TsHsfAld-overexpressing plants. We propose that the products of both TsHsfAld and AtHsfAld function as positive regulators of Arabidopsis heat-stress response and would be useful for the improvement of heat-stress tolerance in other plants.

Inhibitory Activity of <i>Burkholderia</i>sp. Isolated from Soil in Gotsu City, Shimane, against <i>Magnaporthe oryzae</i>

An isolate GT4028 was obtained from soil samples collected from a field in Gotsu city (Kawahira), Shimane. The use of a culture suspension and culture filtrate of this isolate significantly suppressed the spore germination in Magnaporthe oryzae. The inhibitory activity of the culture filtrate was heat-stable. The formation of rice blast lesions by M. oryzae was significantly suppressed in the presence of the culture suspension of isolate GT4028. Furthermore, mycelial growth of some plant pathogenic fungi was inhibited by the isolate in a dual culture assay. Sequence analysis of 16S rDNA region of the isolate indicated that it shared similarities with species of the genus Burkholderia. Also, isolate GT4028 could be grown even in the presence of fungicides (Blastin, Kasugamycin, and Amistar) that act against M. oryzae. These results suggest that isolate GT4028 might be a potential control agent for plant protection against diseases, such as rice blast disease.

Dehydrosulfurization of Aromatic Thioamides to Nitriles Using Indium(III) Triflate

The efficient dehydrosulfurization of thioamides to nitriles was carried out using indium(III) triflate as a catalyst. Based on the results of the initial study, the optimal reaction conditions required 5 mol% of indium(III) triflate with toluene as the practical solvent. Various thioamides were successfully converted to nitriles in high yields.
