explanation vs Performance in Data Mining: A Case Study with Predicting Runaway Projects

Often, the explanatory power of a learned model must be traded off against model performance. In the case of predict-ing runaway software projects, we show that the twin goals of high performance and good explanatory power are achievable after applying a variety of data mining techniques (discrimination, feature subset selection, rule covering algorithms). This result is a new high water mark in predicting runaway projects. Measured in terms of precision, this new model is as good as can be expected for our data. Other methods might out-perform our result (e.g. by generating a smaller, more explainable model) but no other method could out-perform the precision of our learned model.

A multi-local-world model is introduced to describe the evolving networks that have a localization property such as the Internet. Based on this model, we show that the traffic load defined by 'betweenness centrality' on the multi-local-world scale-free networks' model also follows a power law form. In this kind of network, a few vertices have heavier loads and so play more important roles than the others in the network.

Chest pain accounts for 700,000 hospital attendances in the UK each year. Prompt risk assessment and diagnosis both improves outcomes and reduces unnecessary admissions. Data on patients who presented to the eD with chest pain was collected retrospectively. Patients were then followed up via hospital records and telephone. 70% of the authors＇ patients were triaged as low risk chest pain. Three represented within 30 d with non ischaemic chest pain. 1 patient had MACe. The authors＇ triage pathway safely managed those presenting with chest pain.

The long-term warming of the ocean is a critical indicator of both the past and present state of the climate system. It also provides insights about the changes to come, owing to the persistence of both decadal variations and secular trends,which the ocean records extremely well(Hansen et al., 2011;IPCC, 2013;Rhein et al., 2013;Trenberth et al., 2016;Abram et al., 2019).

目的　分析戊型肝炎病毒 (HeV)Ⅳ型的全基因序列以比较与其他基因型的差异。方法　设计PCR引物对全基因进行分片段扩增 ,并对两个末端采用末端快速扩增方法 (RACe)进行扩增 ,对扩增产物进行克隆及测序。结果　HeV T1全序与Ⅰ型、Ⅱ型和Ⅲ型的核苷酸同源性分别为(74.8～ 75 .5 ) %、74.5 %和 (75 .3～ 76 .3) %。ORF1与已报道的Ⅰ型、Ⅱ型和Ⅲ型氨基酸同源性分别为(85 .0～ 86 .7) %、85 .0 %和 (88.5～ 88.7) % ;ORF2与已报道的Ⅰ型、Ⅱ型和Ⅲ型的氨基酸同源性分别为 (91.6～ 92 .4) %、90 .1%和 (91.9～ 93.0 ) % ;ORF3与已报道的Ⅰ型、Ⅱ型和Ⅲ型的氨基酸同源性分别为 (75 .9～ 77.8) %、75 .0 %和 (79.6～ 83.3) %。结论　这一研究为今后发展戊型肝炎诊断试剂及戊型肝炎疫苗提供了新的、重要的分子生物学基础。

The increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from human activities traps heat within the climate system and increases ocean heat content(OHC). Here, we provide the first analysis of recent OHC changes through 2021 from two international groups. The world ocean, in 2021, was the hottest ever recorded by humans, and the 2021 annual OHC value is even higher than last year’s record value by 14 ± 11 ZJ(1 zetta J = 1021 J) using the IAP/CAS dataset and by16 ± 10 ZJ using NCeI/NOAA dataset. The long-term ocean warming is larger in the Atlantic and Southern Oceans than in other regions and is mainly attributed, via climate model simulations, to an increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations. The year-to-year variation of OHC is primarily tied to the el Nino-Southern Oscillation(eNSO). In the seven maritime domains of the Indian, Tropical Atlantic, North Atlantic, Northwest Pacific, North Pacific, Southern oceans,and the Mediterranean Sea, robust warming is observed but with distinct inter-annual to decadal variability. Four out of seven domains showed record-high heat content in 2021. The anomalous global and regional ocean warming established in this study should be incorporated into climate risk assessments, adaptation, and mitigation.
