Fracture geometry and breakdown pressure of radial borehole fracturing in multiple layers

Radial borehole fracturing that combines radial boreholes with hydraulic fracturing is anticipated to improve the output of tight oil and gas reservoirs.This paper aims to investigate fracture propagation and pressure characteristics of radial borehole fracturing in multiple layers.A series of laboratory experiments with artificial rock samples(395 mm×395 mm×395 mm)was conducted using a true triaxial fracturing device.Three crucial factors corresponding to the vertical distance of adjacent radial borehole layers(vertical distance),the azimuth and diameter of the radial borehole are examined.Experimental results show that radial borehole fracturing in multiple layers generates diverse fracture geometries.Four types of fractures are identified based on the connectivity between hydraulic fractures and radial boreholes.The vertical distance significantly influences fracture propagation perpendicular to the radial borehole axis.An increase in the vertical distance impedes fracture connection across multiple radial borehole layers and reduces the fracture propagation distance along the radial borehole axis.The azimuth also influences fracture propagation along the radial borehole axis.Increasing the azimuth reduces the guiding ability of radial boreholes,which makes the fracture quickly curve to the maximum horizontal stress direction.The breakdown pressure correlates with diverse fracture geometries observed.When the fractures connect multi-layer radial boreholes,increasing the vertical distance decreases the breakdown pressure.Decreasing the azimuth and increasing the diameter also decrease the breakdown pressure.The extrusion force exists between the adjacent fractures generated in radial boreholes in multiple rows,which plays a crucial role in enhancing the guiding ability of radial boreholes and results in higher breakdown pressure.The research provides valuable theoretical insights for the field application of radial borehole fracturing technology in tight oil and gas reservoirs.

CO_(2)flooding in shale oil reservoir with radial borehole fracturing for CO_(2)storage and enhanced oil recovery

This study introduces a novel method integrating CO_(2)flooding with radial borehole fracturing for enhanced oil recovery and CO_(2)underground storage,a solution to the limited vertical stimulation reservoir volume in horizontal well fracturing.A numerical model is established to investigate the production rate,reservoir pressure field,and CO_(2)saturation distribution corresponding to changing time of CO_(2)flooding with radial borehole fracturing.A sensitivity analysis on the influence of CO_(2)injection location,layer spacing,pressure difference,borehole number,and hydraulic fractures on oil production and CO_(2)storage is conducted.The CO_(2)flooding process is divided into four stages.Reductions in layer spacing will significantly improve oil production rate and gas storage capacity.However,serious gas channeling can occur when the spacing is lower than 20 m.Increasing the pressure difference between the producer and injector,the borehole number,the hydraulic fracture height,and the fracture width can also increase the oil production rate and gas storage rate.Sensitivity analysis shows that layer spacing and fracture height greatly influence gas storage and oil production.Research outcomes are expected to provide a theoretical basis for the efficient development of shale oil reservoirs in the vertical direction.

Antibacterial gas therapy: Strategies, advances, and prospects

One of the challenges posed by current antibacterial therapy is that the expanded and massive use of antibiotics endows bacteria with the ability to resist almost all kinds of antibiotics.Therefore,developing alternative strategies for efficient antibacterial treatment is urgently needed.Antibacterial gas therapy has attracted much attention in the past decade.Nitric oxide(NO),carbon monoxide(CO),sulfur dioxide(SO2),hydrogen sulfide(H_(2)S),and hydrogen(H_(2))are not only known as endogenous signaling molecules,but also play critical roles in many pathological processes.These gases are considered as attractive bactericidal agents because they are able to kill bacteria,disperse biofilms,and promote bacteria-infected wound healing while avoiding resistance.In this review,we discuss the bactericidal properties of these gases,as well as the recent advances of gas-involving systems in antibacterial,antibiofilm,and wound treatment applications.Moreover,we summarize various gas donors utilized in antibacterial treatment.We hope this review will shed new light on the future design and applications of advanced antibacterial gas therapy.

Mass Spectrometry-Based Targeted Metabolomics Revealed the Regulatory Roles of Magnesium on Biofilm Formation in Escherichia coli by Targeting Functional Metabolites

Biofi lms often impose harmful infl uences in many niches involving food contamination,antibiotics resistance,and environmental issues.However,eradicating biofi lms remains diffi cultly because the formation mechanism of biofi lms is still incompletely clarifi ed.Here,we attempted to explore the regulatory role of magnesium(Mg^(2+))on biofi lm formation in Escherichia coli(E.coli)using phenotype visualization with targeted metabolomics method.We found that Mg^(2+)could exert signifi cant infl uence on biofi lm formation with a concentration dependency by regulating phenotypic morphology and triggering metabolic modifi cations of biofi lm.Phenotypic imaging revealed that increasing concentration of Mg^(2+)gradually inhibited biofi lm formation,Mg^(2+)was observed to restore the microstructure of E.coli strain in biofi lms to that in the relevant planktonic cells.In addition,our metabolomics analysis characterized 20 diff erential metabolites and associated two metabolic pathways including nucleotide metabolism and amino acid metabolism that were notably modifi ed during biofi lm formation under the treatments of varied Mg^(2+).Altogether,our work provides a novel insight into the infl uence of Mg^(2+)on biofi lm formation at a metabolic level,which is implicated in the novel solution to disturb biofi lm formation through the regulation of Mg^(2+)and functional metabolite interaction.

Non-spherical particle mixing behaviors by spherical inert particles assisted in a fluidized bed

Fluidized beds are widely used in many industrial fields such as petroleum,chemical and energy.In actual industrial processes,spherical inert particles are typically added to the fluidized bed to promote fluidization of non-spherical particles.Understanding mixing behaviors of binary mixtures in a fluidized bed has specific significance for the design and optimization of related industrial processes.In this study,the computational fluid dynamic-discrete element method with the consideration of rolling friction was applied to evaluate the mixing behaviors of binary mixtures comprising spherocylindrical particles and spherical particles in a fluidized bed.The simulation results indicate that the differences between rotational particle velocities were higher than those of translational particle velocities for spherical and non-spherical particles when well mixed.Moreover,as the volume fraction of the spherocylindrical particles increases,translational and rotational granular temperatures gradually increase.In addition,the addition of the spherical particles makes the spherocylindrical particles preferably distributed in a vertical orientation.

In-situ pressure-preserved coring(IPP-Coring)is considered to be the most reliable and efficient method for the identification of the scale of oil and gas resources.During IPP-Coring,because the rotation behavior of the pressure controller valve cover in different medium environments is unclear,interference between the valve cover and inner pipe may occur and negatively affect the IPP-Coring success rate.To address this issue,we conducted a series of indoor experiments employing a high-speed camera to gain greater insights into the valve cover rotation behavior in different medium environments,e.g.,air,water,and simulated drilling fluids.The results indicated that the variation in the valve cover rotation angle in the air and fluid environments can be described by a one-phase exponential decay function with a constant time parameter and by biphasic dose response function,respectively.The rotation behavior in the fluid environments exhibited distinct elastic and gravitational acceleration zones.In the fluid environments,the density clearly impacted the valve cover closing time and rotation behavior,whereas the effect of viscosity was very slight.This can be attributed to the negligible influence of the fluid viscosity on the drag coefficient found in this study;meanwhile,the density can increase the buoyancy and the time period during which the valve cover experienced a high drag coefficient.Considering these results,control schemes for the valve cover rotation behavior during IPP-Coring were proposed for different layers and geological conditions in which the different drilling fluids should be used,e.g.,the use of a high-density valve cover in high-pore pressure layers.

Simulation on hydrodynamics of non-spherical particulate system using a drag coefficient correlation based on artificial neural network

Fluidization of non-spherical particles is very common in petroleum engineering.Understanding the complex phenomenon of non-spherical particle flow is of great significance.In this paper,coupled with two-fluid model,the drag coefficient correlation based on artificial neural network was applied in the simulations of a bubbling fluidized bed filled with non-spherical particles.The simulation results were compared with the experimental data from the literature.Good agreement between the experimental data and the simulation results reveals that the modified drag model can accurately capture the interaction between the gas phase and solid phase.Then,several cases of different particles,including tetrahedron,cube,and sphere,together with the nylon beads used in the model validation,were employed in the simulations to study the effect of particle shape on the flow behaviors in the bubbling fluidized bed.Particle shape affects the hydrodynamics of non-spherical particles mainly on microscale.This work can be a basis and reference for the utilization of artificial neural network in the investigation of drag coefficient correlation in the dense gas-solid two-phase flow.Moreover,the proposed drag coefficient correlation provides one more option when investigating the hydrodynamics of non-spherical particles in the gas-solid fluidized bed.

A patient misdiagnosed with central serous chorioretinopathy: A case report

BACKGROUND Due to some similarities in the manifestations between central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV),PCV may be misdiagnosed as CSC.More attention should be paid to distinguishing these two disorders.CASE SUMMARY A 52-year-old woman presented to our hospital with blurred vision in her left eye for approximately 1 wk.Anterior segment and intraocular pressure findings were normal in both eyes.Fundus photography of the left eye showed a seemingly normal adult oculus fundus without any obvious hard exudate or hemorrhage.Optical coherence tomography exhibited a hypo-reflective space beneath both the neurosensory retina and the pigment epithelium layer.The late phase of fluorescein angiography revealed increased leakage.The patient was initially diagnosed with CSC.At follow-up,however,the final diagnosis turned out to be PCV.CONCLUSION CSC and PCV are two different retinal entities.Lipid deposition and hemorrhage are the most important elements that lead to confusion between these two entities.Indocyanine green angiography should be performed to make a definitive diagnosis,especially in cases with suspected PCV.

Ferroelectric artificial synapse for neuromorphic computing and flexible applications

Research of artificial synapses is increasing in popularity with the development of bioelectronics and the appearance of wearable devices.Because the high-temperature treatment process of inorganic materials is not compatible with flexible substrates,organic ferroelectric materials that are easier to process have emerged as alternatives.An organic synaptic device based on P(VDF-TrFE)was prepared in this study.The device showed reliable P/E endurance over 104 cycles and a data storage retention capability at 80℃ over 104 s.Simultaneously,it possessed excellent synaptic functions,including short-term/long-term synaptic plasticity and spike-timing-dependent plasticity.In addition,the ferroelectric performance of the device remained stable even under bending(7 mm bending radius)or after 500 bending cycles.This work shows that low-temperature processed organic ferroelectric materials can provide new ideas for the future development of wearable electronics and flexible artificial synapses.

Diphenylchlorin (DPC) and diphenylbacteriochlorin (DPBC) were synthesized for the first time from reduction of 5,10-diphenylporphyrin (DPP). As photosensitizers they have sizable absorption in the red region of the visible spectrum. The high yield of DPC.-photosensitized generation Of O-1(2), and the EPR studies in homogenerous solution showed that the photodynamic action of DPP-based photosensitizers may proceed via type I and type II machanisms.
