Hepatobiliary cystadenomas (HBC) and cystadenocarci- nomas are rare cystic lesions. Most patients with these lesions are asymptomatic, but presentation with ob- structive jaundice may occur. The first patient presented with intermittent colicky pain and recurrent obstructive jaundice. Imaging studies revealed a polypoid lesion in the left hepatic duct. The second patient had recurrent jaundice and cholangitis. Endoscopic retrograde cholan- giopancreatography (ERCP) showed a cystic lesion at the confluence of the hepatic duct. In the third patient with intermittent jaundice and cholangitis, cholangioscopy re- vealed a papillomatous structure protruding into the left bile duct system. In the fourth patient with obstructive jaundice, CT-scan showed slight dilatation of the intrahe- patic bile ducts and dilatation of the common bile duct of 3 cm. ERCP showed filling of a cystic lesion. All patients underwent partial liver resection, revealing HBC in the specimen. In the fifth patient presenting with obstructive jaundice, ultrasound examination showed a hyperecho- genic cystic lesion centrally in the liver. The resection specimen revealed a hepatobiliary cystadenocarcinoma. HBC and cystadenocarcinoma may give rise to obstruc- tive jaundice. Evaluation with cross-sectional imaging techniques is useful. ERCP is a useful tool to differentiate extraductal from intraductal obstruction.

This paper investigates a reconstruction method for helical computed tomography which compensates for the motion artifacts in the thorax caused by patient breathing. The method takes into account a motion vector field determined from a four-dimensional （4-D） uncompensated image data set. Surface models of the lung and the ribs are tracked through the 4-D data set to create motion information within the entire thorax. Finally, an image is reconstructed using motion compensated back-projection. The results show that due to the use of shape models for the motion estimation, the method is fast and robust. Furthermore, since the surfaces are tracked individually, reconciling the opposite motion direction of the lung and rib cage in one motion vector field is avoided.

Background:Differential allelic expression(DAE)plays a key role in the regularion of many biological processes,and it may also play a role in adaptive ***,environment-dependent DAE has been observed in species of marine phytoplankton,and most remarkably,alleles that showed the highest level of DAE also showed the fastest rate of ***:To better understand the role of DAE in adaptive evolution and phenotypic plasticity,we developed a 2-D cellular automata model“DAEsy-World”that builds on the classical Daisyworld ***:Simulations show that DAE delineates the evolution of alternative alleles of a gene,enabling the two alleles to adapt to different environmental conditions and *** DAE,the build-up of genetic polymorphisms within genes is driven by positive selection rather than strict neutral evolution,and this can enhance phenotypic ***,in sexually reproducing organisms,DAE also increased the standing genetic variation,augmenting a species’adaptive evolutionary potential and ability to respond to fluctuating and/or changing conditions(cf,genetic assimilation).We furthermore show that DAE is likely to evolve in fluctuating environmental ***:DAE increases the adaptive evolutionary potential of both sexual and asexually reproducing organisms,and it may affect the pattern of nucleotide substitutions of genes.

Results of percutaneous sclerotherapy and surgical treatment in patients with symptomatic simple liver cysts and polycystic liver disease

AIM: To evaluate the results of the treatment of simple liver cysts (solitary and multiple) and polycystic liver disease (PLD) using percutaneous sclerotherapy and/or surgical procedures in a single tertiary referral centre. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 54 patients referred for evaluation and possible treatment of simple liver cysts (solitary and multiple) and PLD, from January 1997 to July 2006. RESULTS: Simple liver cysts were treated in 41 pts (76/) with a mean size of 12.6 cm. The most common reason for referral was abdominal pain or discomfort (85/). Percutaneous sclerotherapy was performed as initial treatment in 30 pts, showing cyst recurrence in 6 pts (20/). Surgical treatment was initially performed in 11 pts with cyst recurrence in 3 pts (27/). PLD was treated in 13 pts (24/) with a mean size of the dominant cyst of 13 cm. Percutaneous sclerotherapy for PLD was performed in 9 pts with recurrence in 7 pts (77.8/). Surgical treatment for PLD was undertaken in 4 pts (30.8/) with recurrence in all. Eventually, 2 pts with PLD in the presence of polycystic kidney disease underwent liver-and kidney transplantation because of deterioration of liver and kidney function. CONCLUSION: The majority of patients with simple liver cysts and PLD are referred for progressive abdominal pain. As initial treatment, percutaneous sclerotherapy is appropriate. Surgical deroofing is indicated in caseof cyst recurrence after percutaneous sclerotherapy. However, the results of percutaneous sclerotherapy and surgical treatment for PLD are disappointing. Partial liver resection is indicated when there is suspicion of a pre-malignant lesion.

The peculiar isomer-selective reduction of(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates(oxime isomers)into(α)-hydroxyaminophosphonate(hydroxylamine)derivatives is presented.A library of 16(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates is prepared and studied via a unique multifaceted approach involving the interplay of NMR,XRD,MS,IM-MS and computational chemistry *** combination of NMR,XRD and HPLC enables the seamless separation,identification and quantification of the oxime isomers(E/Z).Tandem MS(MS/MS)enables the determination of the fragmentation patterns for both *** energy breakdown curves highlight the order of apparition of the fragments as well as their related energy of fragmentation,demonstrating that the strength of the C–P bond in the Z isomers is much weaker than in the E *** chemistry demonstrates that favorable protonation site is isomer-dependent with the phosphonate moiety being the favorable protonation site for the E isomers,while protonation occurs preferentially on the amino moiety for Z isomers regardless of the phosphite *** combination of these various methods led an unprecedented level of characterization of oxime isomers,providing a better uderstanding of the isomer-dependent behavior of(α)-hydroxyiminophosphonates.

Photodynamic therapy （PDT） is a tumor treatment modality in which a tumor- localized photosensitizer is excited with light, which results in local production of reactive oxygen species, destruction of tumor vasculature, tumor hypoxia, tumor cell death, and induction of an anti-tumor immune response. However, pre-existing tumor hypoxia may desensitize tumors to PDT by activating the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 （HIF-1） survival pathway. Therefore, we hypothesized that inhibition of HIF-1 with acriflavine （ACF） would exacerbate cell death in human epidermoid carcinoma （A431） cells. PDT of A431 tumor cells was per- formed using newly developed and optimized PEGylated cationic liposomes containing the photosensitizer zinc phthalocyanine （ZnPC）. Molecular docking revealed that ACF binds to the dimerization domain of HIF-la, and confocal microscopy confirmed translocation of ACF from the cytosol to the nucleus under hypoxia. HIF-1 was stabilized in hypoxic, but not normoxic, A431 cells following PDT. Inhibition of HIF-1 with ACF increased the extent of PDT-induced cell death under hypoxic conditions and reduced the expression of the HIF-1 target genes VEGF, PTGS2, and EDN1. Moreover, co-encapsulation of ACF in the aqueous core of ZnPC-containing liposomes yielded an adjuvant effect on PDT efficacy that was comparable to non-encapsulated ACF. In conclusion, HIF-1 contributes to A431 tumor cell survival following PDT with liposomal ZnPC. Inhibition of HIF-1 with free or liposomal ACF improves PDT efficacy.

Background: Recent projections expect that Vietnam will be affected most severely by climate change with higher temperatures, more precipitation and rising sea levels. Especially increased temperatures will worsen the situations in cities, amplifying the urban heat island effect. Green infrastructures, i.e. urban trees are a common rtool to improve the urban micro-climate for humans. Vital and well growing trees provide greatest benefits such as evaporative cooling, shading, air filtering and carbon storage. However, urban tree growth is often negatively affected by urban growing conditions such as high soil sealing with compacted tree pits providing small growing spaces with limited water, nutrient and oxygen supply, further warm temperatures and high pollution emissions. This study analyzed the growth of urban and rural African mahogany(Khaya senegalensis(Desr.) A. Juss.) trees in the city of Hanoi, Vietnam and the effects of the surrounding climate conditions on tree ***: The results showed that rural African mahogany trees grew better than trees situated in the city center, which is contrary to other results on tree growth of temperate and subtropical cities worldwide. Moreover tree growth was similar regardless of the time of growth. Other results regarding stem growth of African mahogany located in different areas of Hanoi(east, west, north, city center) revealed a better growth in the northern and western outskirts of the city compared to the growth of trees in the city ***: African mahogany trees in the urban centers of Hanoi showed a decreased growth compared to rural trees,which was likely induced by a low ground-water level and high pollution rates. In view of climate change and global warming, the decreased tree growth in the city center may also affect tree service provision such as shading and cooling. Those climate mitigation solutions are strongly needed in areas severely affected by climate change and global warming such as
