A pentaploid-based linkage map of the ancestral octoploid strawberry Fragaria virginiana reveals instances of sporadic hyper-recombination

The first high-resolution genetic linkage map of the ancestral octoploid(2n=8x=56)strawberry species,Fragaria virginiana,was constructed using segregation data obtained from a pentaploid progeny *** novel mapping population of size 178 was generated by crossing highly heterozygous *** hybrid“LB48”as a paternal parent with diploid(2n=2x=14)Fragaria vesca“Hawaii 4”.The LB48 linkage map comprises 6055 markers genotyped on the Axiom®IStraw90 strawberry SNP *** map consists of 28 linkage groups(LGs)organized into seven homoeology groups of four LGs each,and excludes a small 29th LG of undefined *** member of each homoeology group was assignable to an“A”subgenome associated with ancestral diploid Fragaria vesca,while no other subgenomes were *** an intriguing discrepancy within homoeology group VI,synteny comparisons with the previously published Fragaria×ananassa DA×mO linkage map revealed substantial *** initial map construction,examination of crossover distributions revealed that six of the total 5162(=29 chromosomes/individual×178 individuals)chromosomes making up the data set exhibited abnormally high crossover counts,ranging from 15 to 48 crossovers per chromosome,as compared with the overall mean of 0.66 crossovers per *** of these six hyper-recombinant(HypR)chromosomes occurred in a different LG and in a different *** calculated upon exclusion of the six HypR chromosomes,the canonical(i.e.,broadly representative)LB48 map had 1851 loci distributed over a total map length of 1873 cm,while their inclusion increased the number of loci by 130,and the overall map length by 91 *** of these hyper-recombinant chromosomes points to the existence of a sporadically acting mechanism that,if identified and manipulable,could be usefully harnessed for multiple purposes by geneticists and breeders.

The Rosaceae crop family(including almond,apple,apricot,blackberry,peach,pear,plum,raspberry,rose,strawberry,sweet cherry,and sour cherry)provides vital contributions to human well-being and is economically significant across the *** 2003,industry stakeholder initiatives prioritized the utilization of genomics,genetics,and breeding to develop new cultivars exhibiting both disease resistance and superior horticultural ***,rosaceous crop breeders lacked certain knowledge and tools to fully implement DNA-informed breeding—a“chasm”existed between existing genomics and genetic information and the application of this knowledge in *** RosBREED project(“Ros”signifying a Rosaceae genomics,genetics,and breeding community initiative,and“BREED”,indicating the core focus on breeding programs),addressed this challenge through a comprehensive and coordinated 10-year effort funded by the USDA-NIFA Specialty Crop Research *** was designed to enable the routine application of modern genomics and genetics technologies in *** crop breeding programs,thereby enhancing their efficiency and effectiveness in delivering cultivars with producer-required disease resistances and market-essential horticultural *** review presents a synopsis of the approach,deliverables,and impacts of RosBREED,highlighting synergistic global collaborations and future *** technologies and tools developed are described,including genome-wide scanning platforms and DNA diagnostic *** of DNA-informed breeding use by project participants are presented for all breeding stages,including pre-breeding for disease resistance,parental and seedling selection,and elite selection *** chasm is now bridged,accelerating rosaceous crop genetic improvement.

Impact of increasing one-carbon metabolites on traumatic brain injury outcome using pre-clinical models

Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death and disability worldwide,affecting over 69 million individuals ***-carbon metabolism has been shown to have beneficial effects after brain damage,such as ischemic ***,whether increasing one-carbon metabolite vitamins impacts traumatic brain injury outcomes in patients requires more *** aim of this review is to evaluate how one-carbon metabolites impact outcomes after the onset of traumatic brain ***,Web of Science,and Google Scholar databases were searched for studies that examined the impact of B-vitamin supplementation on traumatic brain injury *** search terms included combinations of the following words:traumatic brain injury,dietary supplementation,one-carbon metabolism,and *** focus of each literature search was basic science *** year of publication in the literature searches was not *** analysis of the literature has shown that dietary supplementation of B-vitamins has significantly improved the functional and behavioral recove ry of animals with traumatic brain injury compared to *** r,this improvement is dosage-dependent and is contingent upon the onset of supplementation and whether there is a sustained or continuous delive ry of vitamin supplementation post-traumatic brain *** details of supplementation post-traumatic brain injury need to be further ***,we conclude that B-vitamin supplementation improves behavioral outcomes and reduces cognitive impairment post-traumatic brain injury in animal model *** investigation in a clinical setting should be stro ngly considered in co njunction with current medical treatments for traumatic brain injury-affected individuals.

Applying machine Learning Approach to Explore Childhood Circumstances and Self-Rated Health in Old Age-China and the US,2020-2021

Introduction:Childhood circumstances impact senior health,prompting the introduction of machine learning methods to assess their individual and collective contributions to senior ***:Using health and retirement study(HRS)and China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS),we analyzed 2,434 American and 5,612 Chinese participants aged 60 and *** inference trees and forests were employed to estimate the influence of childhood circumstances on self-rated health(SRH).Results:The conventional method estimated higher inequality of opportunity(IOP)values in both China(0.039,accounting for 22.67%of the total Gini coefficient 0.172)and the US(0.067,accounting for 35.08%of the total Gini coefficient 0.191).In contrast,the conditional inference tree yielded lower estimates(China:0.022,accounting for 12.79%of 0.172;US:0.044,accounting for 23.04%of 0.191),as did the forest(China:0.035,accounting for 20.35%of 0.172;US:0.054,accounting for 28.27%of 0.191).Childhood health,financial status,and regional differences were key determinants of senior *** conditional inference forest consistently outperformed others in predictive accuracy,as demonstrated by lower out-of-sample mean squared error(mSE).Discussion:The findings emphasize the need for early-life interventions to promote health equity in aging *** learning showcases the potential in identifying contributing factors.

Energy and blast performance of beryllium in a model thermobaric composition in comparison with aluminum and magnesium

A direct comparison is made between the effectiveness of Al,mg,and Be powders as additional fuels in model thermobaric compositions containing 20%fuel,20%ammonium perchlorate,and 60%RDX(1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane)passivated with *** determined calorimetric measurements of the heat of detonation,along with the overpressure histories in an explosion chamber filled with nitrogen,were used to determine the quasi-static pressure(QSP)under anaerobic *** measurements were also performed in a semi-closed bunker,and all blast wave parameters generated after the detonation of 500 g charges of the tested explosives were *** calorimetry results,QSP values,and blast wave parameters(pressure amplitude,specific and total impulses)clearly indicate that Be is much more effective as an additional fuel than either Al or mg in both anaerobic post-detonation reactions as well as the subsequent aerobic *** heat of detonation of the RDXwax/AP/Be explosive mixture is over 40%and 50%higher than that of the mixture containing aluminum and magnesium instead of beryllium,***,the TNT equivalent of the Be-containing composition due to the overpressure in the nitrogen-filled explosion chamber is 1.66,while the equivalent calculated using an air shock wave-specific impulse at a distance of 2.5 m is equal to *** high values of these parameters confirm the high reactivity of beryllium in both the anaerobic and aerobic stages of the thermobaric explosion.

We report herein an interesting finding that heterocyclic molecules tethered branched polymers exhibit innate immune stimulating *** we conjugated a series of five-,six-,or seven-membered heterocyclic molecules to branched polyethylenimine(bPEI),over 70%of them could induce the secretion of interferon-β(IFN-β)from murine dendritic and human leukemia monocytic(DC2.4 and THP-1)cells through activating the stimulator of interferon genes(STING)*** further proved that this kind of innate stimulating activity was dependent on the macromolecular architecture as heterocyclic molecules tethered linear PEI(lPEI)or dendritic polyamidoamine(PAmAm)induced no or much less IFN-β***,we prepared a series of poly-L-lysine(PLL)-derivatives with different branches to tether with heterocyclic molecules and proved that this kind of bPEI-like structure was important in en hancing the binding affinity with STING proteins and for exhibiting innate stimulating activity.

Estimating the effects of meteorology on Pm_(2.5) reduction during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China

Particulate pollution was a critical challenge to the promise of good air quality during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games,which took place from August 8th to *** ensure good air quality for the Games,several temporary emission control measures were implemented in Beijing and surrounding *** particulate matter concentration decreased significantly during the Olympic period;however,it is difficult to distinguish the effectiveness of those control measures since meteorology also affects ambient Pm_(2.5) *** this work,a multiple linear regression model based on continuous field monitoring at a roadside site was conducted to evaluate the effects of meteorology and emission control measures on the reduction of Pm_(2.5) during the 2008 Olympic *** hourly data set was divided into two time periods,the no control period,June 22nd to July 4th,and the control period,July 28th to August *** response variable was Pm_(2.5) and the meteorology covariates used in the model were hourly temperature,dew point temperature,wind speed and *** direction was not a significant predictor of Pm_(2.5) levels in either the control or the no control *** the meteorologically-based regression coefficients from the two time periods,meteorology was found to contribute to at least a 16%reduction in Pm_(2.5) levels in the roadside microenvironment;while the pollution control measures contributed to at least a 43%reduction in Pm_(2.5) levels.

The non-ionizing and penetrative characteristics of terahertz(THz)radiation have recently led to its adoption across a variety of *** effectively utilize THz radiation,modulators with precise control are *** most recent THz modulators manipulate the amplitude,frequency,or phase of incident THz radiation,considerably less progress has been made toward THz polarization *** methods for polarization control suffer from high driving voltages,restricted modulation depth,and narrow band capabilities,which hinder device performance and broader ***,an ideal THz modulator that offers high modulation depth along with ease of processing and operation is *** this paper,we propose and realize a THz metamaterial comprised of microelectromechanical systems(mEmS)actuated by the phase-transition material vanadium dioxide(VO_(2)).Simulation and experimental results of the three-dimensional metamaterials show that by leveraging the unique phase-transition attributes of VO_(2),our THz polarization modulator offers notable advancements over existing designs,including broad operation spectrum,high modulation depth,ease of fabrication,ease of operation condition,and continuous modulation *** enhanced features make the system a viable candidate for a range of THz applications,including telecommunications,imaging,and radar systems.

Dynamic convergent shock compression initiated by return current in high-intensity laser-solid interactions

We investigate the dynamics of convergent shock compression in solid cylindrical targets irradiated by an ultrafast relativistic laser *** particle-in-cell simulations and coupled hydrodynamic simulations reveal that the compression process is initiated by both magnetic pressure and surface ablation associated with a strong transient surface return current with density of the order of 10^(17) A/m^(2) and lifetime of 100 *** results show that the dominant compression mechanism is governed by the plasma β,i.e.,the ratio of thermal pressure to magnetic *** targets with small radius and low atomic number Z,the magnetic pressure is the dominant shock compression *** to a scaling law,as the target radius and Z increase,the surface ablation pressure becomes the main mechanism generating convergent ***,an indirect experimental indication of shocked hydrogen compression is provided by optical shadowgraphy measurements of the evolution of the plasma expansion *** results presented here provide a novel basis for the generation of extremely high pressures exceeding Gbar(100 TPa)to enable the investigation of high-pressure physics using femtosecond J-level laser pulses,offering an alternative to nanosecond kJ-laser pulse-driven and pulsed power Z-pinch compression methods.
