Research toward photonic biosensors for point-of-care applications and personalized medicine is driven by the need for high-sensitivity,low-cost,and reliable *** the most sensitive modalities,interferometry offers particularly high performance,but typically lacks the required operational simplicity and ***,we introduce a common-path interferometric sensor based on guided-mode resonances to combine high performance with inherent *** sensor exploits the simultaneous excitation of two orthogonally polarized modes,and detects the relative phase change caused by biomolecular binding on the sensor *** wide dynamic range of the sensor,which is essential for fabrication and angle tolerance,as well as versatility,is controlled by integrating multiple,tuned structures in the field of *** approach circumvents the trade-off between sensitivity and dynamic range,typical of other phase-sensitive modalities,without increasing *** sensor enables the challenging label-free detection of procalcitonin,a small protein(13 kDa)and biomarker for infection,at the clinically relevant concentration of 1 pg mL^(−1),with a signal-to-noise ratio of *** result indicates the utility for an exemplary application in antibiotic guidance,and opens possibilities for detecting further clinically or environmentally relevant small molecules with an intrinsically simple and robust sensing modality.

The article analyses the interaction between the COVID-19 pandemic and social inequality in the United States,taking the state of Maine as a case *** pandemic has revealed the effects of high economic inequality on public health in the United States,where in comparison to most developed capitalist democracies,the health care system is expensive,inefficient,and highly skewed in quality and ***,for industries that were already losing jobs,the pandemic has accelerated a painful transition and intensified the harsh social and economic consequences of high and rising inequality,especially for low-wage *** case of Maine underscores the point that policies aimed at reducing the disparities in the distribution of income,health care,education,and opportunity will reduce inequality,protect public health,and stimulate economic growth.

Potential of the Random forest Model on mapping of different desertification processes was studied in Muttuma watershed of mid-Murrumbidgee river region of New South Wales,*** vulnerability index was developed using climate,terrain,vegetation,soil and land quality indices to identify environmentally sensitive areas for *** forest Model(RfM)was used to predict the different desertification processes such as soil erosion,salinization and waterlogging in the watershed and the information needed to train classification algorithms was obtained from satellite imagery interpretation and ground truth *** factors(evaporation,rainfall,temperature),terrain factors(aspect,slope,slope length,steepness,and wetness index),soil properties(pH,organic carbon,clay and sand content)and vulnerability indices were used as an explanatory *** accuracy and kappa index were calculated for training and testing *** recorded an overall accuracy rate of 87.7%and 72.1%for training and testing sites,*** found larger discrepancies between overall accuracy rate and kappa index for testing datasets(72.2%and 27.5%,respectively)suggesting that all the classes are not predicted *** prediction of soil erosion and no desertification process was good and poor for salinization and water-logging ***,the results observed give a new idea of using the knowledge of desertification process in training areas that can be used to predict the desertification processes at unvisited areas.

Large-scale electrical energy storage with high energy density and round-trip efficiency is important to the resilience of power grids and the effective use of intermittent renewable energy such as solar and *** battery,due to its high energy density,is believed to be one of the most promising energy storage systems for the ***,large overpotentials,poor cycling stability,and degradation of electrolytes and cathodes have been hindering the development of lithium-oxygen *** heterogeneous oxygen electrocatalysts have been investigated to lower the overpotentials and enhance the cycling stability of lithium-oxygen ***,the prevailing issues of electrode passivation and clogging *** the past few years,redox mediators were explored as homogenous catalysts to address the issues,while only limited success has been achieved for these soluble *** conjunction with a flowing electrolyte system,a new redox flow lithium-oxygen battery(RfLOB)has been devised to tackle the aforementioned *** working mechanism and schematic processes will be elaborated in this *** addition,the performance gap of RfLOB with respect to practical requirements will be *** the above,we anticipate RfLOB would be a credible solution for the implementation of lithium-oxygen battery chemistry for the next generation energy storage.

Bottom-up synthesis of semiconductor nanowires(NWs)by the vapor-liquid-solid(VLS)mechanism has enabled diverse technological applications for these *** metallic NWs,however,it has been challenging to form large-area interconnected NW ***,we generate centimeter-scale meshes of mechanically and electrically interconnected Si NWs by sequentially growing,collapsing,and joining the NWs using a capillarity-driven welding *** fabricate meshes from VLS-grown NWs ranging in diameter from 20 to 100 nm and find that the meshes are three-dimensional with a thickness ranging from^1 to^10 microns depending on the NW *** extinction measurements reveal that the networks are semi-transparent with a color that depends on the absorption and scattering characteristics of individual ***,active voltage contrast imaging of both centimeter-and micron-scale meshes reveals widespread electrical *** a sacrificial layer,we demonstrate that the mesh can be liberated from the growth substrate,yielding a highly flexible and transparent *** transport measurements both on the growth substrate and on liberated,flexible films reveal electrical conduction across a centimeter scale with a sheet resistance of^160-180 kΩ/square that does not change significantly upon *** the ability to encode complex functionality in semiconductor NWs through the VLS process,we believe these meshes of networked NWs could find application as neuromorphic memory,electrode scaffolds,and bioelectronic interfaces.

Intracranial haemorrhages,including intracerebral haemorrhage(ICH),intraventricular haemorrhage(IVH)and subarachnoid haemorrhage(SAH),are leading causes of morbidity and mortality *** addition,haemorrhage contributes to tissue damage in traumatic brain injury(TBI).To date,efforts to treat the long-term consequences of cerebral haemorrhage have been *** rates and mortality have not showed significant improvement in recent *** terms of secondary damage following haemorrhage,it is becoming increasingly apparent that blood components are of integral importance,with haemoglobin-derived iron playing a major ***,the damage caused by iron is complex and varied,and therefore,increased investigation into the mechanisms by which iron causes brain injury is *** ICH,IVH,SAH and TBI are related,this review will discuss the role of iron in each,so that similarities in injury pathologies can be more easily *** summarises important components of normal brain iron homeostasis and analyses the existing evidence on iron-related brain injury *** further discusses treatment options of particular promise.
