Landslide susceptibility mapping using the infinite slope,SHALSTAB,SINMAP,and TRIgRS models in Serra do Mar,Brazil

Slope failure triggered by heavy rainfall is very common in tropical and subtropical regions and a cause of major social and economic *** susceptibility maps can be generated using geographical information systems(gIS)and limit equilibrium slope stability models coupled or not to hydrological *** study investigated the efficacy of four models used for slope stability analysis in predicting landslide-susceptible areas in a gIS *** selected models are the infinite slope,the shallow slope stability model(SHALSTAB),the stability index mapping(SINMAP),and the transient rainfall infiltration and grid-based regional slope-stability(TRIgRS).For comparisons,the authors(a)included the infinite slope equation in all models,(b)clearly defined input parameters and failure triggering mechanisms for each simulation(soil depth,water table height,rainfall intensity),(c)determined appropriate values for each model to obtain stability levels that represented similar hydrogeotechnical conditions,and(d)considered upper-third areas of landslide scars to estimate the reliability of susceptibility maps using validation *** intense rainfall event occurred in Serra do Mar,Brazil in January 2014 triggered hundreds of landslides and was used for back analysis and evaluation of the slope stability analysis *** rainfall intensity is not considered,the four models produced very similar *** most reliable landslide susceptibility map was generated using TRIgRS and considering the granite residual granite soils geological-geotechnical unit,subjected to a rainfall intensity of 210 mm for 2 h under unsaturated conditions.

Robot impedance control and passivity analysis with inner torque and velocity feedback loops

Impedance control is a well-established technique to control interaction forces in robotics. However, real implementations of impedance control with an inner loop may suffer from several limitations. In particular, the viable range of stable stiffness and damping values can be strongly affected by the bandwidth of the inner control loops （e.g., a torque loop） as well as by the filtering and sampling frequency. This paper provides an extensive analysis on how these aspects influence the stability region of impedance parameters as well as the passivity of the system. This will be supported by both simulations and experimental data. Moreover, a methodology for designing joint impedance controllers based on an inner torque loop and a positive velocity feedback loop will be presented. The goal of the velocity feedback is to increase （given the constraints to preserve stability） the bandwidth of the torque loop without the need of a complex controller.

This paper considers the torque control problem for robots with flexible joints driven by electrical actuators. It is shown that the achievable closed-loop tracking bandwidth using PI torque controllers may be limited due to transmission zeros introduced by the load dynamics. This limitation is overcome by using positive feedback from the load motion in unison with PI torque controllers. The positive feedback is given in terms of load velocity, acceleration and jerk. Stability conditions for designing decentralized PI torque controllers are derived in terms of Routh-Hurwitz criteria. Disturbance rejection properties of the closed system are characterized and an analysis is carried out investigating the use of approximate positive feedback by omitting acceleration and/or jerk signals. The results of this paper are illustrated for a two DoF （degrees of freedom） system. Experimental results for a one DoF system are also included.

The global Leprosy Assessment Index(gLAI):A new approach for measuring the severity of disease in Brazil

Background:In Brazil,the Ministry of Health(MH)monitors leprosy using 15 indicators,with the aim of imple-menting and evaluating evidence-based public ***,an excessive number of variables can compli-cate the definition of objectives and verification of epidemiological ***:In this paper,we develop the global Leprosy Assessment Index(gLAI),a composite measure that integrates two key dimensions for the control the disease:epidemiological and *** a confirmatory factor analysis model to examine 2020 state-level data,we have standardized gLAI to a range of 0 to ***:Higher values within this range indicate a greater severity of the *** mean value of the gLAI was 0.67,with a standard deviation of *** has the highest value,followed by Paraíba with 0.88 while Tocantins records the lowest value of the indicator,followed by Mato grosso with *** epidemiological and operational indicators have a positive but statistically insignificant correlation(r=0.25;p-value=0.20).Conclusions:The development of evidence-based public policies depends on the availability of valid and reliable *** gLAI presented in this paper is easily reproducible and can be used to monitor the disease with disaggregated ***,the gLAI has the potential to serve as a more robust parameter for evaluating the impact of actions designed to eradicate leprosy in Brazil.

Development and application of a SPE-LC-QTOF method for the quantification of micropollutants of emerging concern in drinking waters from the Brazilian capital

The Brazilian Federal District is located under a savannah climate characterized by an intense dry season,resulting in severe problems related to water *** situation motivates the search for alternate water sources,leading to the indirect water reuse in the Paranoa Lake,an artificial reservoir located in the heart of the Brazilian *** work aimed the assessment of 35 micropollutants of emerging concern by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass ***-phase extraction conditions(Oasis HLB)were optimized by a factorial *** were then assessed in 0.45 mm filtered samples(1 L)under three different pH by matrix-matched calibration with standard additions and high-resolution multiple reaction monitoring ***,bisphenol A and the insect repellant DEET were detected in all investigated samples(n=14),followed by atrazine(86%of the samples),carbamazepine(71%),paraxanthine(71%),mefenamic acid(64%),nicotine(57%),atenolol(43%)and sulfamethoxazole(43%).Although not frequently detected,the reproductive hormones,estrone,17β-estradiol and estriol,as well as the ovulation inhibitor 17α-ethinylestradiol were detected in a sample from the Paranoa Lake WTP in concentrations ranging from 3.71±0.08 and 5.6±0.1 ng L^-*** these levels,risk quotients indicate the potential for adverse effects to both human health and the environment.

Partitioning between primary and secondary metabolism of carbon allocated to roots in four maize genotypes under water deficit and its effects on productivity

Plants may respond to drought by altering biomass allocation to shoots and roots or by changing the metabolic activities in these organs. To determine how drought changes the partitioning of carbon allocated to growth and secondary metabolism in maize roots and how it affects photosynthesis(A) and productivity in maize, we evaluated leaf gas exchange, yield componentes, root morphology, and primary and secondary metabolites including total soluble sugars(TSS), starch(S), phenolics(PHE), and lignin(LIg). Data were collected from pot-grown plants of four maize genotypes: BRS 1010 and 2B710(sensitive genotypes) and DKB390 and BRS1055(tolerant genotypes) under two soil water tensions: field capacity(FC,-18 kP a) and water deficit(WD,-138 kP a). WD was applied at the pre-flowering stage for 12 days and then the water supply was restored and maintained at optimum levels until the end of the cycle. For genotype BRS 1055 under FC, the greatest A did not result in greater grain biomass(DgB) because the accumulated photoassimilates had already filled the cells, and thus the excessive TSS synthesized in leaves was allocated to roots in large amounts. However, the sharp decrease in A caused by WD imposition in this genotype did not affect the influx pressure of leaf TSS, which was due largely to conversion of primary metabolites to PHE compounds to increase the length of fine roots. In leaves of DKB390 under WD, both S and TSS were reduced, whereas PHE were increased to prevent excessive water loss and xylem cavitation. Under WD, both BRS1010 and2B710 genotypes displayed reduced allocation of biomass to shoots and roots and LIg content in leaves, as well as lower A and DgB values. In BRS1010 this response was coupled to S decrease in leaves and TSS increase in roots, whereas in 2B710 there was a concomitant S increase in roots.
