Effects of quantitative feed restriction and sex on carcass traits,meat quality and meat lipid profile of Morada Nova lambs

Background: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feed restriction(FR) and sex on the quantitative and qualitative carcass traits of Morada Nova lambs. Thirty-five animals with an initial body weight of 14.5 ± 0.89 kg and age of 120 d were used in a completely randomized study with a 3 × 3 factorial scheme consisting of three sexes(11 entire males, 12 castrated males and 12 females) and three levels of feeding(ad libitum – Al and 30% and 60% FR).Results: Entire males presented greater hot and cold carcass weights(P llowed by castrated males and females. However, the hot carcass yield was higher for females and castrated males than for entire males. luminosity values were influenced(P les presenting higher values than castrated males and *** showed higher(P concentrations of linoleic acid and arachidonic acid in the meat of the longissimus thoracis muscle. The meat of animals submitted to Al intake and 30% FR showed similar(P > 0.05) concentrations, and the concentrations of palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and conjugated linoleic acid were higher(P ls with 60% FR. The meat of females had a higher ω6/ω3 ratio and lower h/H ratio, and females had greater levels of feeding. The meat of animals on the 60% FR diet had a greater ω6/ω3 ratio, lower h/H ratio and lower concentration of desirable fatty acids in addition to a greater atherogenicity index(AI) and thrombogenicity index(TI).conclusion: lambs of different sexes had carcasses with different quantitative traits without total influence on the chemical and physical meat characteristics. The lipid profile of the meat was less favorable to consumer health when the animals were female or submitted to 60% feed restriction.

carbon-based solid lubricants are excellent options to reduce friction and wear,especially with the carbon capability to adopt different allotropes *** the macroscale,these materials are sheared on the contact along with debris and contaminants to form tribolayers that govern the tribosystem *** a recently developed advanced Raman analysis on the tribolayers,it was possible to quantify the contactinduced defects in the crystalline structure of a wide range of allotropes of carbon-based solid lubricants,from graphite and carbide-derived carbon particles to multi-layer graphene and carbon *** addition,these materials were tested under various dry sliding conditions,with different geometries,topographies,and solid-lubricant application *** of the initial tribosystem conditions and allotrope level of atomic ordering,there is a remarkable trend of increasing the point and line defects density until a specific saturation limit in the same order of magnitude for all the materials tested.

Background:Hemodialysis(HD) per se is a risk factor for *** the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction(BFR) exercise in HD patients,identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent D-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training *** aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher D-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance exercise(RE) with BFR on this ***:Two hundred and six HD patients volunteered for this study(all with a glomerular filtration rate of l/min/1.73 m2).The RE+BFR session consisted of 50% arterial occlusion pressure during 50 min sessions of HD(intradialytic exercise).RE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases(each lasting 2 s) and were supervised by a strength and conditioning ***:Several variables were associated with elevated levels of D-dimer,including higher blood glucose,citrate use,recent cardiovascular events,recent intercurrents,higher inflammatory status,catheter as vascular access,older patients(>70 years old),and HD ***,RE+BFR significantly increases D-dimer after 4 *** with borderline baseline D-dimer levels(400-490 ng/ml) displayed increased risk of elevating D-dimer over the normal range(≥500 ng/ml).conclusion:These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for HD patients who wish to undergo RE+BFR.D-dimer and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to maximize safety during RE+BFR.

Effect of Turbidity on Semi-Automatic Analysis of copepod Size and Abundance Distribution in the Water column

Automated image systems to characterize aquatic organisms improve research and enable fast response to environmental risk situations. In November 2015, a dam in Mariana city-MG (Brazil) collapsed and led to the disposal of mud tailings from the mining process to the Doce River. The accident resulted in several casualties and incalculable damage to surrounding communities and the environment. The mud increased water turbidity, an essential condition to the functioning of the image analysis systems, and directly affected the characterization of the organisms, making it impossible to distinguish copepods in the mud, due to the blurred outline. To get a quick response evaluating environmental situations, this work aimed to develop and test different algorithms characterizing and classifying copepods by their size (length and area) using in situ images acquired by the lightframe On-Sight Keyspecies Investigation device. Field tests were carried out under different turbidity levels throughout the gradient observed in the coastal zone adjacent to the Doce River. The best algorithm reduced nearly 50% of the noise in some images when compared with manual treatment and led to 96% accuracy in measurement and counting. Semi-automated devices that perform post-processing corrections are suitable for fast environmental evaluation under high turbidity scenarios.

Prevalence of latent Tuberculosis Infection [lTBI] in Prison Officers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the lTBI prevalence in prison officers worldwide. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, WoS, Embase, and BVS, including all articles related to lTBI prevalence and risk factors. After critical evaluation and qualitative synthesis of the identified articles, a meta-analysis was used. Five studies carried out between 2012 and 2022 were included, with a total sample size of 1718 prison officers. The overall lTBI prevalence was 50% [95% confidence interval [cI]: 48% - 52%;n = 816], with high heterogeneity between studies. Smoking [OR = 1.76;cI 95% = 1.26 - 2.46] and males [OR = 2.08;cI 95% = 1.31 - 3.31] were positively related to a higher lTBI prevalence among prison officers. Thus, preventive measures and the rapid and accurate diagnosis of new cases should be emphasized to ensure tuberculosis control, especially among risk groups such as prison officers.

The present study aimed to determine whether natural dehydrated feed (DNF) can replace dry extruded feed while preserving the required daily intake, nutrient digestibility and benefits for immunity and antioxidant response in cats. The animals were divided into two groups of seven animals each. One group received DNF, and the other consumed commercial extruded dry feed (DcF). The experiment lasted 45 days and we measured daily consumption and collected blood and feces samples. The animals in the DNF group showed greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter than DcF. cats in the DNF group had a higher volume of feces. DNF cats had lower leukocyte and granulocyte counts and cholesterol levels. Serum enzymatic antioxidant responses and non-enzymatic were higher in DNF cats. cats in the DNF group showed lower serum acute phase proteins in addition to a tendency toward a higher concentration of transferrin than in the DcF group. Fecal Escherichia coli and total coliform counts of cats fed DNF were higher than DcF. We conclude that the daily consumption of cats is adequate. This feed had greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter, in addition to an improvement in antioxidant and immunological responses.

Tertiary peritonitis: A disease that should not be ignored

Intra-abdominal infections can be classified into uncomplicated or complicated(peritonitis). Peritonitis is divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary. Tertiaryperitonitis is the less common but the most severe among peritonitisstratifications, being defined as a recurrent intra-abdominal infection that occurs48 h after a well-succeeded control of a secondary peritonitis. This disease has acomplex pathogenesis that is closely related to the capacity of the peritonealcavity to activate immunological processes. Patients who progress to persistentperitonitis are at an increased risk of developing several infectious complicationssuch as sepsis and multiple organ failure syndrome. Moreover, tertiary peritonitisremains an important cause of hospital death mainly among patients withassociated risk factors. The microbiological profile of organisms causing tertiaryperitonitis is often different from that observed in other types of peritonitis. Inaddition, there is a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens causing thiscondition, and an appropriate and successful clinical management depends on anearly diagnosis, which can be made easier with the use of clinical scorespresenting a good prediction value during the intensive care unit ***, immediate therapy should be performed to control theinfectious focus and to prevent new recurrences. In this sense, the treatment isbased on initial antimicrobial therapy and well-performed peritoneal drainage.

Viral infections have haunted humankind since times ***,globalization,and extensive deforestation have created an ideal environment for a viral spread with unknown and multiple shedding *** viruses can infect the male reproductive tract,with potential adverse consequences to male reproductive health,including infertility and ***,some genital tract viral infections can be sexually transmitted,potentially impacting the resulting offspring's *** have summarized the evidence concerning the presence and adverse effects of the relevant viruses on the reproductive tract(mumps virus,human immunodeficiency virus,herpes virus,human papillomavirus,hepatitis B and c viruses,Ebola virus,Zika virus,influenza virus,and coronaviruses),their routes of infection,target organs and cells,prevalence and pattern of virus shedding in semen,as well as diagnosis/testing and treatment *** pathophysiological understanding in the male genital tract is essential to assess its clinical impact on male reproductive health and guide future research.

Introduction:The small archipelago of Tl’chés,in coastal British columbia,has gone through drastic social-ecological change culminating in the decline of traditional management practices,invasion of exotic plant species and,in the early 1960s,land *** is a common trend in cultural landscapes around the *** landscapes have great social-ecological significance,including cultural safeguarding and renewal,as well as maintenance of biodiversity,ecosystem functions and services,making them objects of special attention in conservation and restoration *** study investigates the relationship between the lekwungen people and heavily altered ecosystems in the context of ecological restoration for the cultural landscapes of Tl’ché***:In order to thoroughly explore the ecological,social and cultural aspects and processes involved in the restoration of Tl’chés,this study combined different environmental sciences methodologies,including historical and archival research,semi-structured interviews and participatory observation with lekwungen participants,as well as ecological field assessments and an innovative mapping approach termed Terrestrial cultural Ecosystem Mapping(TcEM).Results:This study generated historical and spatial references for ecosystem and land use change in West chatham Island,as well as cultural and ecological understandings to support *** important native species such as camassia *** still thriving,present-day ecosystems on this island are heavily altered from the natural Garry oak ecosystem reference sites and are largely dominated by exotic invasive shrubs and graminoid *** investigation indicates that the lekwungen value both the historical ecological conditions of the island and particular types of the present-day novel or hybrid ecological states,such as the overgrown heritage orchard and nonnative berries found on the ***:Present-day ecosystems of Tl’chés are a result of
