GC-MS analysis of leaf extracts of Terminalia macroptera and Dioclea reflexa,two medicinal plants used for the treatment of respiratory tract disorders

Objective:To analyze the phytochemicals that are present in two medicinal plants which are used for the treatment of respiratory tract infections by gas chromatography-mass ***:The plant leaves were extracted with n-hexane and methanol *** extracts were analyzed for present phytochemicals using the method described by Harborne,1985 while only methanol extracts were subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometer ***:Phytochemical screening of the methanolic extracts of Terminalia macroptera(***)revealed the presence of glycosides,tannins,flavonoids,saponins and steroids while that of Dioclea reflexa(***)showed the presence of flavonoids,saponins and *** n-hexane extracts were devoid of the screened *** and twenty-five compounds were identified in the leaves of *** and *** *** compounds were fatty acids,fatty acid esters,other esters,heterocyclics and *** most abundant compound in *** was benzenetriol(53.30%)while the predominant compounds in *** were dodecanoic acid,methyl ester(15.31%),5,5,8a-trimethyl-3,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydro-2H-chromene(9.73%),10-octadecenoic acid,methyl ester and 2-hexadecanoic acid,methyl ester(8.95%).Benzofuran,2,3-dihydro,3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol and hexadecanoic acid,methyl ester were common in both plant *** antimicrobial properties of the leaves of these plants could be responsible for their use in the treatment of respiratory tract ***:Some of the identified phytochemicals in the plant leaves are responsible for its use in the treatment of respiratory tract infections.

Objective:To determine the prevalence,mean intensity,and abundance of monogenean parasites in Clarias gariepinus(***)from two selected fish farms in Calabar,Cross River State,***:Eighty specimens of *** from the two farms(40 each)were necropsied for parasitological ***,gill and fin biopsies were prepared from each specimen following standard methods for microscopic *** indices including dominance(D),prevalence,mean intensity and abundance were calculated according to standard *** were analyzed using the Fisher's exact ***:*** from the two farms were infested with a total of ninety individuals of monogenean parasites belonging to three species including Macrogyrodactylus clarii(***),Gyrodactylus *** Dactylogyrus sp.D index showed that the three monogenean species were eudominant(D-value>10%).Gyrodactylus *** more abundant(46)followed by Dactylogyrus sp.(23)while *** was the lowest(21).Prevalence,meaning intensity and abundance of monogenean parasites in the two farms,varied insignificantly higher(P>0.05).Prevalence in both farms were higher in female *** than that in *** parasites exhibited organ specificity as *** and Dactylogyrus *** recovered from the gills while Gyrodactylus *** the skin and ***:High abundance of these parasites may lead to poor growth performance and high mortality in ***,leading to huge monetary loss and low profit margin by increasing production cost due to the cost of treatments.

Allanblackia parviflora A. Chev. also called vegetable tallow tree provides a variety of non-timber forest products of great importance to rural households including shade, timber, medicine and seed oil but attempts have not been made to improve the tree species and increase its production. Consequently, the species is being threatened due to unsustainable exploitation and poor regeneration and cultivation appears as the only viable option. In order to cultivate the species at meaningful scale, it is necessary to establish the optimum range of environmental factors that influence its propagation and growth. This study was therefore designed to investigate Allanblackia growth parameters and bio-accumulation under different growth media in a greenhouse study. The media were: 1) TS = top soil alone, 2) AB soil = Allanblackia soil alone, 3) TS + H = Top soil alone + humus, 4) AB + TS = Allanblackia soil alone + Top soil alone and 5) SAB = Sterilized Allanblackia soil alone. Each treatment was replicated three times in a complete randomized design. The experiment lasted for 18 months. Results showed that Fe was the micronutrient that accumulated greatest in the plant tissue. Among the treatments, Allanblackia soil showed the highest accumulation of Zn in the plant tissue with the top soil showing the least (7.67 mg·kg-l). Humus contributed largely to the bio-accumulation of Cu in the plant tissue. Bio-accumulation of manganese in the plant tissue ranged from 13.30 mg·kg-l to 207 mg·kg-l suggesting difference in manganese absorption by Allanblackia as influenced by the treatments. The growth parameters of Allanblackia parviflory were impacted differently by the growth media. The result was however controversial since no differences were found between growth of seedlings in sterilized Allanblackia soil and Allanblackia soil.

Objectives: The goal of this study was to determine the association of rice consumption with nutrient intake and diet quality in a recent nationally representative sample of US adults. Methods: NHANES data (2005-2010) were used to assess the association of rice consumption by adults (19+ yrs;N = 14,386) with nutrient intake and diet quality. 24-hour dietary intakes were used to calculate usual intake (UI) of rice consumption using the National Cancer Institute methodology. Rice consumption groups were 0.25 to 0.5 to 1.0 oz. eq. of UI of rice. Diet quality (using the Healthy Eating Index-2005 [HEI-2005]) was calculated. Covariate adjusted least square means ± SE were determined and quartile trends across the rice consumption categories were examined. Results: Significant (p < 0.001) positive trends (β coefficient across rice consumption categories) were seen for sodium (118.99 mg), dietary fiber (0.57 g), folate (58.24 μg DFE), magnesium (11.83 mg), iron (0.97 mg) and potassium (29.45 mg). Significant negative trends (p < 0.0001) were seen for intakes of saturated fatty acids (-1.75 g), added sugars (-1.31 g);and calcium (-40.46 mg). HEI-2005 also showed a positive trend (p < 0.0001) with rice consumption (5.5 points). HEI-2005 component scores for total fruit (0.07), whole fruit (0.11), dark green/orange vegetables (0.25), total grains (0.10), meat/beans (0.24), and oils (0.15) were higher (p < 0.01) in rice consumers than non-consumers. HEI-2005 component scores for saturated fatty acids (0.63), solid fats, added sugars, and alcohol (1.22) were higher suggesting more favorable intake, but sodium (-0.24) was lower. Conclusion: Overall, consumption of rice should be encouraged to improve nutrient intake and diet quality. Nutrition education can provide ways to reduce sodium added to rice dishes.
