The activity and thermal stability of Pd/Al2O3 and Pd/（Al2O3＋MOx）（M=Ca, La, Ce） palladium catalysts in the reaction of complete oxidation of methane are presented in this study. The catalyst supports were prepared by sol-gel method and they were dried either conventionally or with supercritical carbon dioxide. Then they were impregnated with palladium nitrate solution. The catalysts with unmodified alumina had a high surface area. The activity and thermal stability of the aluminasupported catalyst was also very high. The introduction of calcium, lanthanum, or cerium oxide into alumina support caused a decrease of the surface area in the way dependent on the support precursor drying method. These modifiers decreased the activity of palladium catalysts, and they required higher temperatures for the complete oxidation of methane than unmodified Pd/Al2O3. The improvement of the palladium activity by lanthanum and cerium support modifier was observed only at low temperatures of the reaction.

Background: Increasing evidence is demonstrating thatinfants born early on during the term period are at increasedrisk of morbidity compared with infants born closer to acomplete 40 week gestational pregnancy. The purpose of thisstudy was to compare early term [gestation age (GA): 37-376/7 weeks] neonatal outcomes with those of other full termneonatal intensive care unit (NICU) ***: Retrospective chart review of all term infantsadmitted to the NICU at New York University LangoneMedical Center over a 17 month period. Subjects weregrouped and analyzed according to their GA at birth: 1)early term infants (GA between 37 0/7 to 37 6/7 weeks) and2) other term infants (38 0/7 weeks and older).Results: Early term infants were more likely to requireNICU care than other term infants [relative risk: 1.42,95% confidence interval (CI)=1.07-1.88), P=0.01]. In theNICU, they are more likely to manifest respiratory distresssyndrome [odds ratio (OR)=5.7, 95% CI=1.6-19.8, P<0.01]and hypoglycemia (OR=4.6, 95% CI=2.0-10.4, P<0.001).In addition, early term neonates were more likely to beborn via elective cesarean section than other term neonates(OR=4.1, 95% CI=2.0-8.5, P<0.001).Conclusions: Being born at early term is associatedwith increased risk of respiratory disease and hypoglycemiarequiring neonatal intensive care. Further efforts directedat decreasing early term deliveries may be warranted.

AIM To present the incidence of heterotopic ossification after the use of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7(rhB MP-7) for the treatment of *** Bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs) promote bone formation by auto-induction. Recombinant human BMP-7 in combination with bone grafts was used in 84 patients for the treatment of long bone nonunions. All patients were evaluated radiographicaly for the development of heterotopic ossification during the standard assessment for the nonunion healing. In all patients(80.9%) with radiographic signs of heterotopic ossification, a CT scan was performed. Nonunion site palpation and ROM evaluation of the adjacent jointswere also carried out. Factors related to the patient(age, gender), the nonunion(location, size, chronicity, number of previous procedures, infection, surrounding tissues condition) and the surgical procedure(graft and fixation type, amount of rhB MP-7) were correlated with the development of heterotopic ossification and statistical analysis with Pearsons χ~2 test was *** Eighty point nine percent of the nonunions treated with rh BMP-7, healed with no need for further procedures. Heterotopic bone formation occurred in 15 of 84 patients(17.8%) and it was apparent in the routine radiologi-cal evaluation of the nonunion site, in a mean time of 5.5 mo after the rh BMP-7 application(range 3-12). The heterotopic ossification was located at the femur in 8 cases, at the tibia in 6, and at the humerus in οne patient. In 4 patients a palpable mass was present and only in one patient, with a para-articular knee nonunion treated with rhB MP-7, the size of heterotopic ossification affected the knee range of motion. All the patients with heterotopic ossification were male. Statistical analysis proved that patient's gender was the only important factor for the development of heterotopic ossification(P = 0.007). Aniseed distillates, like ouzo in Greece, raki in Turkey, pastis in France, and arak in Syria, are very popular in Mediterranean countries. This flavoured alcoholic beverage is produced by extraction and distillation of fermented grape pomaces with herbal seeds from aromatic plants like Pimpinella anisum L., Foeniculum vulgare, Illicium verum and other plants which are also characterized by the presence of congeners which arise during fermentation process. Trans-anethol and its isomer cis-anethol are the main volatiles and are responsible for aroma properties of these traditional aniseed distillates. The aim of this research work was to find the concentration of special aromatic agent, trans-anethol and cis-anethol and also the major aromatic substances which are responsible for the aromatic quality. The majority of their identified components are isolated by extraction and distillation from different commercial brands and homemade samples. The constituents were identified by GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectometry) in this traditional spirit. The major constituents in distilled ouzo extract were also trans-anethol.

The essential oil and gum of Pistachia lentiscus var. Chia, commonly known as the mastic gum tree, are natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents that have found extensive uses in food, beverages and medicine in recent years. In this work, the chemical composition of the hydro-distilled essential oil of mastic gum was evaluated by GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) technique and the majority of their components were identified. Twenty nine different compounds were identified and quantified. The gum oil contained monoterpene, hydrocarbons, sesquitepenes, and also oxygen-containing monoterpenes. The main constituents of the gum oil are α-pinene which follow β-pinene and β-myrcene. Essential oil of mastic gum is valuable product in food industries and in folklore medicine due to its antimicrobial and antimutagenic activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the principal congeners of these valuable natural "resin tears" of the tree which are used in flavoring liquors, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Evaluation of New Insecticide （Proteus 170O - TEQ） for the Control of the Brown Cocoa Mirid （Sahlbergella Singularis） in Nigeria

Proteus 170 O - TEQ insecticide was subjected through rigorous testing over years (2005 to 2008) at four concentrations 0.15% (9 mls/10L. H2O), 0.31% (18 mls/10L. H2O), 0.46% (27 mls/10L. H2O) and 0.61% (36 mls/10L. H2O). Each concentration was replicated three times in the field. The mortality rates of mirids on exposure to the various concentrations of Proteus and Standard miricide in the laboratory were similar at 0.46% concentration as both gave a 100% kill of mirids at the 40th minute. The first year field mortalities of mirids recorded 24 hours after the initial and residual applications at the Ibadan, Owena and Ikom at 0.46% active ingredient concentration gave 100% kill of mirids. The mortalities of mirids recorded 24 hours after the second year field initial and residual treatments at the lowest concentration of 0.15% active ingredient ranged between 70.2% and 100%. In the third year, the insecticide at 0.31% concentration compared favourably with the Standard. The residues of thiacloprid in the analyzed cocoa bean samples were below the Limit of Quantitation (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Spraying of mature and fruiting cocoa farms at application rate of 0.46% was found adequate and recommended.
