the van Genuchten (vG) function is often used to describe the soil water retention curve (sWRC) of unsaturated soils and fractured rock. the objective of this study was to develop a method to determine the vG model parameter m from the fractal dimension. We compared two approaches previously proposed by van Genuchten and Lenhard et al. for estimating m from the pore size distribution index of the Brooks and Corey (BC) model. In both approaches we used a relationship between the pore size distribution index of the BC model and the fractal dimension of the sWRC. A dataset containing 75 samples from the UNsODA unsaturated soil hydraulic database was used to evaluate the two approaches. the statistical parameters showed that the approach by Lenhard et al. provided better estimates of the parameter m. Another dataset containing 72 samples from the literature was used to validate Lenhard's approach in which the sWRC fractal dimension was estimated from the clay content. the estimated sWRC of the second dataset was compared with those obtained with the Rosetta model using sand, silt, and clay contents. Root mean square error values of the proposed fractal approach and Rosetta were 0.081 and 0.136, respectively, indicating that the proposed fractal approach performed better than the Rosetta model.

AIM： To screen a suspected Hungarian HNPCC family to find specific mutations and to evaluate their effect on the presentation of the disease. MEthODs： the family was identified by applying the Amsterdam and Bethesda Criteria. Immunohistochemistry was performed, and DNA samples isolated from tumor tissue were evaluated for microsatellite instability. the identification of possible mutations was carried out by sequencing the hMLH1 and hMsH2 genes. REsULTs： Two different mutations were observed in the index patient and in his family members. the first mutation was located in exon 7, codon 422 of hMsH2, and caused a change from Glu to sTOP codon. No other report of such a mutation has been published, as far as we could find in the international databases. the second mutation was found in exon 3 codon 127 of the hMsH2 gene, resulting in Asp→ser substitution. the second mutation was already published, as a non-pathogenic allelic variation. CONCLUsION： the pedigree analysis suggested that the newly detected nonsense mutation in exon 7 of the hMsH2 gene might be responsible for the development of colon cancers. In family members where the exon 7 mutation is not coupled with this missense mutation, colon cancer appears after the age of 40. the association of these two mutations seems to decrease the age of manifestation of the disease into the early thirties.

Objective:To evaluate anti-dyslipidemic,antioxidant and anti-atherosclerogenic properties of this extract in diet-induced hypercholesterolemic rat.a model of metabolic syndrome-induced atherosclerosis and associated cardiovascular ***:Normocholeslerolemic(NC) male rats were divided into six groups(n=10) and fed a high-cholesterol(HC) diet for 30 days(5 groups),or normal rat chow(normal control group).Rats given a HC diet also received distilled water(disease control),the potent hypocholcsterolcmic agent with antiatherosclerotic activity atorvastatin(2 mg/kg,positive control),or one of the three doses of Zanthoxylum heitzii stem bark aqueous extract tested(225,300 and 375 mg/kg) concomitantly for four *** of general toxicity,body temperature and weight,and water and food intake were monitored in live *** sacrifice,lipid profiles and oxidative stress markers were assessed in the blood and liver,aorta,and feces,and histopathological analysis of aorta was ***:Plant extract prevented the elevation of aortic total cholesterol and triglycerides,and hepatic low density lipoprotein,very low density lipoprotein,and total *** peroxidation(TBARs) was decreased and aortic atherosclerotic plaque formation ***:these observations strongly suggest that stem bark aqueous extract of Zanthoxylum heitzii has anti-atherosclerogenic properties,at least partly mediated by antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects.

Objective:To evaluate the prevalence of toxoplasmosis and rubella among pregnant women at Ouagadougou in Burkina ***:All patient sera were tested for rubella and toxoplasmosis anti-IgG using commercial ELIsA kits(Plateliasup>TMsup>Rubella IgG and Platelia? Toxo IgG).the presence of anti-rubella and anti-toxoplasmosis tgM in serum samples was tested using commercial ELIsA kits Platelia Rubella TgM and Platelia Toxo ***:Among all the pregnant women tested for toxoplasmosis and rubella,their prevalence were 20.3% and 77.0%,*** women in the age group of 18-25 years showed the highest frequency of anti-toxoplasmosis（34.5%） and anti-rubella IgG（84.6%）.the prevalence of anti-toxoplasma and anti-rubella IgG decreased between 2006 and 2008 from 32.7%to 12.1%and 84.6% to 65.0%,*** was no significant association between age and the mean titer of anti-toxoplasmosis IgG among pregnant ***:the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis and rubella is necessary in pregnant women in Burkina Faso because of the low immunization coverage rate of rubella and the high level of exposure to these two infections which can be harmful to the newborn if contracted by women before the third trimester of pregnancy.

the characterization of the relationships between mineralization and hydrothermal alteration is an essential element in understanding gold deposits. In south-west Burkina Faso, the Napélépéra mineralisation, the mobility of chemical elements and alteration-mineralization relationships were studied by means of selected core drilling and geochemical analyses using ICP-Ms (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass spectrometry) and ICP-AEs (Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy). the mineralised granodiorite is grey porphyroid with quartz, plagioclase, biotite and amphibole. It is metaluminous and located in the tholeiitic series. the Nasub>2sub>O + CaO versus Fesub>2sub>Osub>3sub> + MgO alteration diagram divides the samples according to alteration dominance. Chloritisation and carbonation are the main alterations. there is a relationship between gold mineralisation at Napélépéra and alteration, and the paragenesis of gold + pyrite ± carbonate ± silica ± sericite is the main characteristic. Carbonation is the result of fluid input in the shear corridor of the mineralised zone. the mass balance of comparative metals in the proximal and distal zones of the mineralisation shows the absence of metals, while As, Hg, Ag and Bi are strongly enriched from the distal zone to the mineralised zone. the oxides associated with the mineralisation are mainly NaO, srO and CaO.

Effect of herpesvirus infection on pancreatic duct cell secretion

AIM： To examine the effect of acute infection caused by herpesvirus （pseudorabies virus, PRV） on pancreatic ductal secretion. MEthODs： the virulent Ba-DupGreen （BDG） and non- virulent Ka-RREp01acgfp （KEG） genetically modified strains of PRV were used in this study and both of them contain the gene for green fluorescent protein （GFP）. small intra/ interlobular ducts were infected with BDG virus （10^7 PFU/mL for 6 h） or with KEG virus （10^10 PFU/mL for 6 h）, while non-infected ducts were incubated only with the culture media. the ducts were then cultured for a further 18 h. the rate of HCO3 secretion [base efflux -λ（B）] was determined from the buffering capacity of the cells and the initial rate of intracellular acidification （1） after sudden blockage of basolateral base loaders with dihydro-4,4,- diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2,-disulfonic acid （500 μmol/L） and amiloride （200 μmol/L）, and （2） after alkali loading the ducts by exposure to NH4Cl. All the experiments were performed in HCO3-buffered Ringer solution at 37 ℃ （n = 5 ducts for each experimental condition）. Viral structural proteins were visualized by immunohistochemistry. Virallyencoded GFP and immunofluorescence signals were recorded by a confocal laser scanning microscope.REsULTs： the BDG virus infected the majority of accessible cells of the duct as judged by the appearance of GFP and viral anUgens in the ductal cells. KEG virus caused a similarly high efficiency of infection. After blockage of basolateral base loaders, BDG infection significantly elevated -λB-） 24 h after the infection, compared to the non-infected group. However, KEG infection did not modify -λB-）. After alkali loading the ducts, -λB-） was significantly elevated in the BDG group compared to the control group 24 h after the infection. As we found with the inhibitor stop method, no change was observed in the group KEG compared to the non-infected group.
