Quantification of perfluorinated compounds in atmospheric particulate shows potential connection with environmental event

A method of quantification of perfluorinated compounds(PFCs)from atmospheric particulate matter(APM)is described.A single step pretreatment method,selective pressurized liquid extraction(SPLE),was developed to reduce the high matrix background and avoid contamination from commonly used multiple sample pretreatment *** effective sorbent was selected to purify the PFCs during SPLE,followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC–MS/MS),for quantification of *** affecting the SPLE efficiency,including temperature,static extraction time,and number of extraction cycles used,were *** optimum conditions were found to be 120℃,10 min,and 3 cycles,***-MS/MS method was developed to obtain the optimal sensitivity specific to *** method detection limits(MDLs)were 0.006 to 0.48 ng/g for the PFCs studied and the linear response range was from 0.1 to 100 ng/*** ensure accurate values were obtained,each step of the experiment was evaluated and controlled to prevent *** optimized method was tested by performing spiking experiments in natural particulate matter matrices and good rates of recovery and reproducibility were obtained for all target ***,the method was successfully used to measure 16 PFCs in the APM samples collected in Beijing over five years from 2015 to *** is observed that some PFCs follow the trend of total PFC changes,and can be attributed to the environment influencing events and policy enforcement,while others don't seem to change as much with time of the year or from year to year.

Tributyltin causes generational neurodevelopmental toxicity and the protective effect of folic acid in zebrafish

Tributyltin(TBT),a common organotin environmental pollutant,may pose a threat to human development during critical early-life *** aimed to assess the neurodevelopmental intergenerational toxicity of early-life exposure to TBT and the protective effect of DNA methyl donor folic acid(FA).Specifically,after early-life exposure(1–21 days postfertilization,dpf)to TBT(0,1,10 and 100 ng/L),zebrafish(Danio rerio)were cultured in clean medium until sexual *** exposed females were mated with unexposed males to produce embryos(F1).The F1 generation were cultured(4–120 hours post-fertilization,hpf)with and without 1 mmol/L *** neurotoxic effects of early-life TBT exposure for zebrafish and their offspring(F1)were significantly enhanced anxiety and reduced aggression,decreased gene expression of DNA methyltransferase in the brain and increased serotonin levels in the ***,the intergenerational neurodevelopmental toxicity,as manifested in the F1 generation,was attenuated by FA *** summary,early-life TBT exposure led to intergenerational neurodevelopmental deficits in zebrafish,and DNA methyl donors had a protective effect on F1 neurodevelopment,which can inform the prevention and treatment of intergenerational neurotoxicity due to organotin pollutants.

The design of diatomic catalysts with uniformly dispersed metal atoms is expected to improve catalytic performance,which is conducive to the intensive comprehending of the synergistic mechanism between dual-metal sites for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER)at the atomic ***,we design a strategy to immobilize bimetallic Fe-Co atoms onto nitrogen-doped graphene to obtain a diatomic catalyst(DA-FC-ng)with FeN_(3)-CoN_(3) *** DA-FC-ng shows excellent OER activity with a low overpotential(η_(10)=268 mV),which is superior to commercial iridium dioxide *** calculations uncover that the excellent activity of DA-FC-ng is due to the interaction between Fe and Co diatoms,which causes charge rearrangement and induces the adsorption of intermediates on the Fe-O-Co bridge structure,thus improving the catalytic OER *** work is of great significance for the design of highly active diatomic catalysts to replace noble metal catalysts for energy-related applications.

The diagnostic value of tenascin-C in acute aortic syndrome

Co-occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their composite impacts on microbial consortium in soil: A field study

This is the first study to report the co-occurrence of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs),heavy metals,and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and their impacts on the native microbial consortium in soil due to the long-term *** PFASs,heavy metals,and PAHs were detected in soil samples collected at 2–6 m below the ground surface at different sampling locations in a steel-making *** total concentrations of PFASs varied from 6.55 to 19.79 ng g^(-1),with perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS),perfluorobutane sulfonate,and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate(alternative of PFOS)being the predominant *** concentrations of arsenic,cadmium,and lead were detected in the ranges of 4.40–1270.00,0.01–8.67,and 18.00–647.00 mg kg^(-1),respectively,and the concentration of total PAHs was detected in the range of 1.02–131.60 mg kg^(-1).The long-term exposure to mixed contaminants of PFASs,heavy metals,and PAHs led to lower richness and diversity of microbial communities in *** soil bacterial communities were mainly composed of Pseudomonas,norank_p_GAL15,Leptothrix,norank_o_Rokubacteriales,and *** between soil environmental factors and microbial communities indicated that cation exchange capacity and total phosphorus were two key factors in shaping the composition of native microbial ***,Arthrobacter,Leptothrix,and Sphingobium were found to be significantly positively correlated with PFAS concentrations,indicating that these genera could tolerate the stress exerted by PFASs,along with the stress imposed due to the presence of heavy metals or/and PAHs.

Lowered testosterone in male obesity： mechanisms, morbidity and management

With increasing modernization and urbanization of Asia, much of the future focus of the obesity epidemic will be in the Asian region. Low testosterone levels are frequently encountered in obese men who do not otherwise have a recognizable hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular （HPT） axis pathology. Moderate obesity predominantly decreases total testosterone due to insulin resistance-associated reductions in sex hormone binding globulin. More severe obesity is additionally associated with reductions in free testosterone levels due to suppression of the HPT axis. Low testosterone by itself leads to increasing adiposity, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of metabolic complications. Obesity-associated hypotestosteronemia is a functional, non-permanent state, which can be reversible, but this requires substantial weight loss. While testosterone treatment can lead to moderate reductions in fat mass, obesity by itself, in the absence of symptomatic androgen deficiency, is not an established indication for testosterone therapy. Testosterone therapy may lead to a worsening of untreated sleep apnea and compromise fertility. Whether testosterone therapy augments diet- and exercise-induced weight loss requires evaluation in adequately designed randomized controlled clinical trials.

A neuron with injured or severed axon responds with attempts at axonal regrowth. In this regard, axonal regeneration of peripheral nerves occurs far more efficiently compared to central nervous system （CNS） neurons. The latter typically could not form a proper growth cone, and any axonal regeneration in vivo is very limited. The adult CNS environment is not conducive for axonal regrowth. An extensive body of work has revealed mechanisms whereby the myelin-associated inhibitors and extracellular matrix chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans promote collapse of axonal growth cones or repel their advances （Lee and Zheng, 2012）. ndrogen-deprivation therapy in men with metastatic rostate cancer： less may not necessarily be more

In a pivotal phase 3 randomized con trolled trial, Hussain et al. tested thehypothesis that, with respect to survival, intermittent androgen deprivation therapy （ADT） is noninferior to continuous in men with newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer. While the trial findings were statis tically inconclusive, the study suggests, but does not prove, that intermittent may do more harm than good, although findings are not definitive. While outcomes of ongoing trials are awaited, the trial by Hussain et al., in conjunction with an ear lier trial in men with nonmetastatic pro state cancer by Crook et al., does provide important new guidance regarding the choice of ADT in men with androgensensitive prostate cancer. ADT is one of the most effective palliat ive therapies for patients with metastatic prostate cancer, but not without drawbacks. While not as toxic as chemotherapy, ADT carries a significant risk of morbidity, including sexual dysfunction, fatigue, ane mia, accelerated bone loss and fractures, sarcopenia, increased risk of diabetes, and possibly, of cardiovascular events.1＇2 In addition, despite an initial response rate of more than 90%, most patients develop res istance to ADT, resulting in a median sur vival of 2.53 years. Predinical data suggest that continuous use of ADT may accelerate the emergence of resistance to this therapy, and that reexposure of prostate cancer stem cells to androgens can reinduce dif ferentiation and increase their apoptotic potential.3 These ADTassociated shortcom ings, in addition to treatment expense, havespurred the development of strategies to min imize the exposure to ADT, including the use of intermittent ADT. While several smaller randomized controlled clinical trials have compared the use of intermittent with con tinuous ADT, no definitive information is available for patients with metastatic prostate cancer.
