Geospatial approach to elucidate anomalies in the hierarchical organization of drainage network in Kuttiyadi River Basin, Southern India

An assessment of anomalies in the hierarchical organization of the drainage network in the Kuttiyadi River Basin(KuRB),Kerala,has been performed by considering various morphometric parameters such as bifurcation index(R),hierarchical anomaly index(Δa),hierarchical anomaly density(ga),and stream gradient index(SL)in a geographical information system(GIS)***,a digital elevation model(DEM)of the area has been generated from Cartosat stereo pair data at 2.5-m *** computed quantitative information about drainage characteristics reveals the highest drainage anomaly is observed in sub-watersheds(SW)III and *** is observed that neo-tectonic activity caused the development of younger stage drainage patterns of structural controls in the sub-watersheds of this river *** tectonic activityinduced diffusion,high energy fluvial erosion,and anthropogenic interferences altered the hierarchical organization of the drainage network of the sub-watersheds in mature to old stages of geomorphic *** results of finding validated with asymmetry factor and ratio of the hierarchical index(Δa)with hierarchical anomaly number(A),bifurcation index(R),direct bifurcation ratio(Rdb),stream gradient index(SL),and denudation index(logTu).From the denudation index analysis,the sediment yield of the river basin is identified as 0.67 t·km^(−2)·yr^(−1).Moreover,the asymmetric factor(AF)in the KuRB shows the imprints of paleo−Neo proterozoic crustal tilting toward a NNW−SSE direction.

Electrical stimulation(ES)is predominantly used as a physical therapy modality to promote tissue healing and functional *** efforts in both laboratory and clinical settings have shown the beneficial effects of this technique for the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues,which include muscle,bone,skin,nerve,tendons,and *** collective findings of these studies suggest ES enhances cell proliferation,extracellular matrix(ECM)production,secretion of several cytokines,and vasculature development leading to better tissue regeneration in multiple ***,there is still a gap in the clinical relevance for ES to better repair tissue interfaces,as ES applied clinically is ineffective on deeper *** use of a conducting material can transmit the stimulation applied from skin electrodes to the desired tissue and lead to an increased function on the repair of that *** conductive(IC)polymeric scaffolds in conjunction with ES may provide solutions to utilize this approach *** IC formulations and their scaffolds may provide solutions for applying ES into difficult to reach tissue types to enable tissue repair and regeneration.A better understanding of ES-mediated cell differentiation and associated molecular mechanisms including the immune response will allow standardization of procedures applicable for the next generation of regenerative ***,along with the use of IC scaffolds is more than sufficient for use as a treatment option for single tissue healing and may fulfill a role in interfacing multiple tissue types during the repair process.

Discovery of natural berberine-derived nitroimidazoles as potentially multi-targeting agents against drug-resistant Escherichia coli

A series of natural berberine-derived nitroimidazoles as novel antibacterial agents were designed, synthesized and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR), infrared spectra(IR), and high resolution mass spectra(HRMS) spectra. The antimicrobial evaluation showed that some target molecules exhibited moderate to good inhibitory activities against the tested bacteria and fungi including clinical drug-resistant strains isolated from infected patients. Especially, 2-fluorobenzyl derivative8 f not only gave strong activity against drug-resistant E. coli with the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) value of0.003 m M, 33-fold more active than norfloxacin, but also exhibited low toxicity toward RAW 264.7 cells and less propensity to trigger resistance. The aqueous solubility and Clog p values of target compounds were investigated to elucidate the structureactivity relationships. Molecular docking and quantum chemical studies for compound 8 f rationally explained its antibacterial effect. The further exploration of antibacterial mechanism revealed that the highly active compound 8 f could effectively permeabilize E. coli cell membrane and intercalate into DNA isolated from resistant E. coli to form 8 f-DNA complex that might block DNA replication to exert the powerful bioactivities. Compound 8 f could also selectively address resistant E. coli from a mixture of various strains.

Antioxidant and Apoptotic Activity of papaya peel Extracts in HepG2 Cells

papaya peels (pp) are discarded after consuming the fruit. However, they contain antioxidants. Oxidative damage caused by free radicals has major implications in many chronic diseases. The objective of this study was to determine in-vitro antioxidant and apoptotic activity of pp extracts. Modulation of endogenous glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), glutathione reductase (GR), cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2), caspase-3 activities and DNA fragmentation by pp extracts in HepG2 cells were evaluated. Gallic acid (18.06 μg/g), caffeic acid (29.28 μg/g), p-coumaric acid (38.16 μg/g), ferulic acid (95.46 μg/g) and quercetin (3.17 μg/g) were the major polyphenols quantified in pp extracts. In-vitro antioxidant capacity of pp was determined by ferric reducing antioxidant potential (31.86 μM Fe+2/g), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (14.56 mM trolox equivalents (TE)/g), oxygen radical scavenging activity (30.88 mM TE/g) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging ability (IC50-8.33 mg/ml). Induction of oxidative stress significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lowered SOD, CAT, Gpx, GR activities and GSH levels by 3.1, 1.46, 2.87, 1.34 and 1.32 folds compared to control respectively. However, treating cells with pp extracts significantly (p ≤ 0.05) enhanced SOD, CAT, Gpx, GR activities and GSH compared to oxidative stress induced cells. Treating cells with pp extracts significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lowered COX-2 activity, enhanced caspase-3 activity and induced DNA fragmentation, indicating that pp extracts caused cell death by apoptosis. In conclusion, anti-cancer properties of pp extracts may be due to the synergistic effect of free radical scavenging ability, induction antioxidant enzymes and by inducing apoptosis.
