Dear Editor,Despite the introduction of novel front-line therapies including rituximab plus high-dose cytarabine followed by consolidative autologous stem cell transplantation(ASCT)and salvage therapy with bendamustine,lenalidomide or bortezomib,mantle cell lymphoma(MCL)is still considered incurable and most patients experience relapse or refractory(RR)disease.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis presenting as small bowel obstruction: A case report and review of the literature

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the bowel wall to a variable depth and symptoms associated with gastrointestinal tract. Recently, the authors experienced a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis presenting as small bowel obstruction. A 51-year old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain and vomiting. Physical examination revealed a distended abdomen with diffuse tenderness. Complete blood count showed mild leukocytosis without eosinophilia. Computed tomography confirmed a dilatation of the small intestine with ascites. An emergency laparotomy was performed for a diagnosis of peritonitis due to intestinal obstruction. Segmental resection of the ileum and end to end anastomosis were performed. Histologically, there was a dense infiltration of eosinophils throughout the entire thickness of ileal wall and eosinophilic enteritis was diagnosed. The patient recovered well, and was free from gastrointestinal symptoms at the time when we reported her disease.

Effect of Sea Level Rise and Offshore Wave Height Change on Nearshore Waves and Coastal Structures

In 1994,Townend proposed a method to calculate the relative changes in various wave characteristics and structure-related parameters due to sea level rise for regular *** method was extended to irregular waves by Cheon and suh in *** this study,this method is further extended to include the effect of future change in offshore wave height and the sea level *** relative changes in wavelength,refraction coefficient,shoaling coefficient,and wave height in nearshore area are presented as functions of the relative changes in water depth and offshore wave *** calculated relative changes in wave characteristics are then used to estimate the effect of sea level rise and offshore wave height change on coastal structures by calculating the relative changes in wave run-up height,overtopping discharge,crest freeboard,and armor weight of the *** relative changes in wave characteristics and structure-related parameters are all expressed as a function of the relative water depth for various combinations of the relative changes in water depth and offshore wave height.

AIM:To investigate the antioxidative status of patients with alcoholic liver disease(ALD) in southeastern ***:Our study comprised 27 patients with ALD recruited from Taitung Mackay Memorial hospital,located in southeastern *** with ALD included 12 non-aborigines(12 men) and 15 aborigines(11 men and 4 women).According to the severity of ALD,patients with ALD included 10 with hepatitis(9 men and 1 woman) and 17 with cirrhosis(14 men and 3 women).Twenty-two age-and gender-matched healthy adultsserved as the control group in this *** blood(10 mL) of each subject was drawn into EDTA-containing tubes after 8 h overnight ***:Compared to the control group,patients with ALD showed significantly lower erythrocytic catalase(11.1 ± 0.7 U/mg Hb vs 8.0 ± 0.7 U/mg Hb,P hose in the control *** non-aboriginal,but not the aboriginal,ALD group had higher erythrocytic glutathione peroxidase(GPX) activity than that in the control group(46.1 ± 7.8 U/g Hb vs 27.9 ± 2.2 U/g Hb,P hosis,ALD patients had higher erythrocytic GPX activity than that in the control group(44.3 ± 8.6 U/g Hb vs 27.9 ± 2.2 U/g Hb,P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:Our results indicate that both ethnicity and the severity of ALD may cause different erythrocytic antioxidative enzyme activities especially GPX activity.

Phase separations have been studied for graded-indium content In_xGa_（1-x）N/GaN multiple quantum wells（MQWs） with different indium contents by means of photoluminescence（PL）,cathodeluminescence（CL） and time-resolved PL（TRPL） *** the main emission peaks,all samples show another 2 peaks at the high and low energy parts of the main peaks in PL when excited at 10 *** images show a clear contrast for 3 samples,which indicates an increasing phase separation with increasing indium *** spectra at 15 K of the main emissions show an increasing delay of rising time with indium content,which means a carrier transferring from low indium content structures to high indium content structures.

Effects of ethanol on antioxidant capacity in isolated rat hepatocytes

AIM： To investigate dose-response and time-course of the effects of ethanol on the cell viability and antioxidant capacity in isolated rat hepatocytes. METhoDS： Hepatocytes were isolated from male adult Wistar rats and seeded into 100-mm dishes. Hepatocytes were treated with ethanol at concentrations between 0 （C）, 10 （E10）, 50 （E50）, and 100 （E100） mmol/L （dose response） for 12, 24, and 36 h （time course）. Then, lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） leakage, malondialdehyde （IDA） concentration, glutathione （GSH） level, and activities of glutathione peroxidase （GPX）, glutathione reductase （GRD）, superoxide dismutase （SOD）, and catalase （CAT） were measured. RESULTS： Our data revealed that LDH leakage was significantly increased by about 30% in group E100 over those in groups C and E10 at 24 and 36 h, The HDA concentration in groups C, E10 and E50 were significantly lower than that in group E100 at 36 h. Furthermore, the concentration of IDA in group E100 at 36 h was significantly higher by 4.5- and 1.7-fold, respectively, than that at 12 and 24 h. On the other hand, the GSH level in group E100 at 24 and 36 h was significantly decreased, by 32% and 28%, respectively, compared to that at 12 h. The activities of GRD and CAT in group E100 at 36 h were significantly less than those in groups C and E10. however, The GPX and SOD activities showed no significant change in each group. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that longtime incubation with higher concentration of ethanol （100 mmol/L） decreased the cell viability by means of reducing GRD and CAT activities and increasing lipid peroxidation.

Corneal collagen crosslinking in patients treated with dextran versus isotonic hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) riboflavin solution: a retrospective analysis

Background:Corneal collagen crosslinking(CXL)is a widely used treatment for halting the progression of *** initial studies of CXL were performed with a riboflavin solution containing dextran,recent protocols for CXL have indicated the use of a riboflavin solution containing isotonic hydroxypropyl methylcellulose(HPMC).This study was performed to investigate differences in visual outcomes and Scheimpflug(Pentacam)analysis in patients who have undergone epithelium-off CXL with riboflavin solution containing either 20%dextran versus 1.1%***:All patients in this non-randomized,non-masked,retrospective cohort analysis were treated at Edward *** Eye Institute,Columbia University Medical Center,New York,NY,***-seven eyes of 33 patients were crosslinked with a dextran solution and 19 eyes of 19 patients crosslinked with an isotonic HPMC solution,both using an epithelium-off 30-min,3 mW/cm2 *** patients had a diagnosis of keratoconus or postrefractive surgery *** spectacle corrected visual acuity(BSCVA)and Pentacam parameters were compared at all follow up visits(1,6,12,and 24 months).Differences between groups treated with HPMC and dextran were compared using student’s *** between treated eye and fellow eye were calculated and compared between HPMC and dextran groups using paired ***:Patients treated with a dextran solution had significantly greater improvement in BSCVA at 1,6,and 24 months(phowever,HPMC-treated patients had a greater increase compared to dextran-treated patients(p=0.01).Kmax decreased in both groups at 6 and 12 months,although this finding was only significant in the HPMC-treated group at 12 ***:Our data suggest that crosslinking with the dextran solution may result in significantly better visual outcomes(demonstrated by visual acuity)compared to the isotonic HPMC ribof
