Objective:The effectiveness of adjuvant treatments for resected gallbladder carcinoma(GBC)has remained unclear due to lack of randomized controlled trials;thus,the aim of present study was to evaluate the role of adjuvant treatments,including chemoradiotherapy(CRT)and/or chemotherapy(CTx),in patients with resected ***:A total of 733 GBC patients who received curative-intent surgical resection were identified in a multi-institutional *** 733 patients,372(50.8%)did not receive adjuvant treatment,whereas 215(29.3%)and 146(19.9%)received adjuvant CTx and CRT,*** locoregional recurrence-free survival(LRFS),recurrence-free survival(RFS),and overall survival(OS)of the adjuvant treatment groups were compared according to tumor stage(stage II *** III–IV).Results:In stage II disease(n=381),the 5-year LRFS,RFS,and OS were not significantly different among the no-adjuvant therapy,CTx,and CRT groups,and positive resection margin,presence of perineural invasion,and Nx classification were consistently associated with worse LRFS,RFS,and OS in the multivariate analysis(P<0.05).For stage III–IV(n=352),the CRT group had significantly higher 5-year LRFS,RFS,and OS than the no-adjuvant therapy and CTx groups(67.8%,45.2%,and 56.9%;37.9%,28.8%,and 35.4%;and 45.0%,30.0%,and 45.7%,respectively)(P<0.05).Conclusions:CRT has value as adjuvant treatment for resected GBC with stage III–IV *** study is needed for stage II disease with high-risk features.

Curative resection of leiomyosarcoma of the descending colon with metachronous liver metastasis: A case report

BACKGROUND Leiomyosarcoma(LMS)has a poor prognosis and rarely originates from the *** resection is possible,surgery is the first treatment most commonly ***,no standard treatment exists for hepatic metastasis of LMS;although,several treatments,such as chemotherapy,radiotherapy,and surgery,have been ***,the management of liver metastases remains *** SUMMARY We present a rare case of metachronous liver metastasis in a patient with LMS originating from the descending colon.A 38-year-old man initially reported abdominal pain and diarrhea over the previous two *** revealed a 4-cm diameter mass in the descending colon,40 cm from the anal *** tomography revealed intussusception of the descending colon due to the 4-cm *** patient underwent a left *** analysis of the tumor revealed that it was positive for smooth muscle actin and desmin,and negative for cluster of differentiation 34(CD34),CD117,and discovered on gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST)-1,which are characteristic of gastrointestinal LMS.A single liver metastasis developed 11 mo postoperatively;the patient subsequently underwent curative resection *** patient remained disease-free after six cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy(doxorubicin and ifosfamide),and 40 and 52 mo after liver resection and primary surgery,*** cases were obtained from a search of Embase,PubMed,MEDLINE,and Google *** Early diagnosis and surgical resection may be the only potential curative options for liver metastasis of gastrointestinal LMS.

Lipase Catalyzed Methanolysis of Tri-(12-Hydroxy Stearoyl)-Glycerol in Organic Solvents

Castor oil is the source of numerous products and is the only commercial source of the fatty acid ricinoleate, 12-hydroxy-oleate. Hydrogenated castor oil is similarly useful as the source of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid, best known as a component of lithium grease. Mono- and diacylglycerols are derived from castor oil and are useful in development of lubricants and emulsifiers for cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food use. Acylglycerols derived from hydrogenated castor oil may be similarly useful, albeit with different physical and chemical properties. We have evaluated the use of immobilized lipases to generate acylglycerols, using organic solvents to modulate the action of lipase to produce mono- and diacylglycerols, using tri-(12-hydroxy stearoyl)-glycerol as a model for hydrogenated castor oil. The presence of an alkylated oxygen in the solvent appears to be an important factor in supporting lipase activity, with diisopropyl ether providing the best yield of di-(12-hydroxy stearoyl)-glycerol.

Adsorption Characteristics of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxybutric Acid Using Bamboo Activated Carbon in a Fixed Bed

Adsorption and desorption characteristics of 2,4-dichlorophenoxybutyric acid (2,4-DB) from aqueous solution on bamboo activated carbon (BAC) were studied in a fixed bed adsorber. The adsorption equilibrium capacity of 2,4-DB on BAC increased with decreasing initial pH of the solution and with a maximum adsorption capacity of 1.61 mol/kg. The adsorption rate of 2,4-DB on BAC could be best fitted by the pseudo first-order model. The adsorption model based on the linear driving force approximation (LDFA) was used for simulating the adsorption behavior of the 2,4-DB in a fixed bed. More than 95% desorption of 2,4-DB was obtained using distilled water.

Protective effect of decursin and decursinol angelate-rich Angelica gigas Nakai extract on dextran sulfate sodium-induced murine ulcerative colitis

Objective: To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of decursin and decursinol angelate-rich Angelica gigas Nakai(AGNE) on dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)-induced murine ulcerative colitis(UC).Methods: The therapeutic effect of an AGNE was analyzed in a mouse model of UC induced by DSS. Disease activity index values were measured by clinical signs such as a weight loss, stool consistency, rectal bleeding and colon length. A histological analysis was performed using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Key inflammatory cytokines and mediators including IL-6, TNF-a, PGE2, COX-2 and HIF-1 a were assayed by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay or western ***: Treatment with the AGNE at 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg alleviated weight loss,decreased disease activity index scores, and reduced colon shortening in mice with DSSinduced UC. AGNE inhibited the production of IL-6 and TNF-a in serum and colon tissue. Moreover, AGNE suppressed the increased expression of COX-2 and HIF-1 a and the increased production of PGE2 in colon tissue were observed in mice with DSSinduced UC. Additionally, histological damage was also alleviated by AGNE ***: The findings of this study verified that AGNE significantly improves clinical symptoms and reduces the activity of various inflammatory mediators. These results indicate the AGNE has the therapeutic potential in mice with DSS-induced UC.

Plant pathogenic bacteria deliver effectors into plant cells to suppress immunity and promote pathogen survival;however, these effectors can be recognised by plant disease resistance (R) proteins to activate innate immunity. The bacterial acetyltransferase effectors HopZ5 and AvrBsT trigger immunity in Arabidopsis thaliana genotypes lacking SUPPRESSOR OF AVRBST-ELICITED RESISTANCE 1 (SOBER1). Using an Arabidopsis accession, Tscha-1, that naturally lacks functional SOBER1 but is unable to recognise HopZ5, we demonstrate that RESISTANCE TO P. SYRINGAE PV MACULICOLA 1 (RPM1) and RPM1-INTERACTING PROTEIN 4 (RIN4) are indispensable for HopZ5- or AvrBsT-triggered immunity. Remarkably, T166 of RIN4, the phosphorylation of which is induced by AvrB and AvrRpm1, was directly acetylated by HopZ5 and AvrBsT. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the acetylation of RIN4 T166 is required and sufficient for HopZ5- or AvrBsT-triggered RPM1-dependent defence activation. Finally, we show that SOBER1 interferes with HopZ5- or AvrBsT-triggered immunity by deacetylating RIN4 T166. We have thus elucidated detailed molecular mechanisms underlying the activation and suppression of plant innate immunity triggered by two bacterial acetyltransferases, HopZ5 and AvrBsT from different bacterial pathogens.

Polymer waveguide tunable transceiver for photonic front-end in the 5G wireless network

A photonic front-end in the 5 G wireless network based on wavelength-division multiplexing optical communication requires low-cost tunable transceivers. By exploiting polymer waveguide Bragg-grating technology, we propose a tunable transceiver consisting of an external cavity tunable laser and a tilted grating tunable *** particular, a double-reflection tunable filter provides narrower reflection bandwidth and suppresses undesired mode coupling, improving the side-mode suppression ratio(SMSR) and reducing adjacent-channel crosstalk. By introducing perfluorinated polymers with low birefringence, polarization independence, which is a prerequisite for wavelength filter elements, is secured, and 20 d B bandwidth of 0.69 nm, wavelength tunability over 40 nm,and SMSR of 42 d B are achieved.

Annealing time dependent structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of RF sputtered p-type transparent conducting SnO_2/Al/SnO_2 thin films

Transparent p-type conducting SnO2/Al/SnO2 multilayer films were fabricated on quartz substrates by radio frequency(RF) sputtering using SnO2 and Al targets. The deposited films were annealed at a fix temperature of 500 °C for different time durations(1-8 h). The effect of annealing time on the structural, morphological, optical and electrical performances of SnO2/Al/SnO2 multilayer films was studied. X-ray diffraction(XRD) results show that all the p-type conducting films possess polycrystalline SnO2 with tetragonal rutile structure. Hall-effect results indicate that 500 °C for 1 h is the optimum annealing condition for p-type SnO2/Al/SnO2 multilayer films, resulting in a hole concentration of 1.14×1018 cm-3 and a low resistivity of 1.38 ?·cm, respectively. The optical transmittance of the p-type SnO2/Al/SnO2 multilayer films is above 80% within annealing time range of 1-8 h, showing maximum for the films annealed for 1 h.

Pancreatic hardness: Correlation of surgeon's palpation, durometer measurement and preoperative magnetic resonance imaging features

AIM To evaluate the correlation between subjective assessments of pancreatic hardness based on the palpation, objective measurements using a durometer, and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) findings for assessing pancreatic *** Eighty-three patients undergoing pancreatectomies were enrolled. An experienced surgeon subjectively evaluated the pancreatic hardness in the surgical field by palpation. The pancreatic hardness was also objectivelyevaluated using a durometer. Preoperative MRI findings were evaluated by a radiologist in terms of the apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) values, the relative signal intensity decrease(RSID) of the pancreatic parenchyma, and the diameter of the pancreatic parenchyma and duct. Durometer measurement results, ADC values, RSID, pancreatic duct and parenchyma diameters, and the ratio of the diameters of the duct and parenchyma were compared between pancreases judged to be soft or hard pancreas on the palpation. A correlation analysis was also performed between the durometer and MRI *** The palpation assessment classified 44 patients as having a soft pancreas and 39 patients as having a hard pancreas. ADC values were significantly lower in the hard pancreas group. The ductal diameter and duct-to-pancreas ratio were significantly higher in the hard pancreas group. For durometer measurements, a correlation analysis showed a positive correlation with the ductal diameter and the duct-to-pancreas ratio and a negative correlation with ADC values. CONCLUSION Hard pancreases showed lower ADC values, a wider pancreatic duct diameter and a higher duct-to-pancreas ratio than soft pancreases. Additionally, the ADC values, diameter of the pancreatic duct and duct-to-pancreas ratio were closely correlated with the durometer results.
