BACKGROUND Atrophic gastritis is characterized by loss of appropriate glands and reduction in gastric secretory function due to chronic inflammatory processes in gastric mucosa. Moreover, atrophic gastritis is considered as a precancerous condition of gastric cancer. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism underlying gastric mucosal atrophy and its contribution to gastric ***, we hypothesized that transcription factor NKX6.3 might be involved in maintaining gastric epithelial homeostasis by regulating amyloid β(Aβ)*** To determine whether NKX6.3 might protect against gastric mucosal atrophy by regulating Aβ *** We identified NKX6.3 depletion induced cell death by cell count and Western blot assay. Production and mechanism of Aβ oligomer were analyzed by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay, Western blot, immunoprecipitation, real-timequantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence analysis. We further validated the correlation between expression of NKX6.3, Helicobacter pylori CagA, Aβ oligomer, apolipoprotein E(ApoE), and β-secretase 1(Bace1) in 55 gastric *** NKX6.3 depletion increased both adherent and floating cell populations in HFE-145 cells. Expression levels of cleaved caspase-3,-9, and poly ADP ribose polymerase were elevated in floating HFE-145^(shNKX6.3) cells. NKX6.3 depletion produced Aβ peptide oligomers, and increased expression of ApoE, amyloid precursor protein, Aβ, Bace1, low-density lipoprotein receptor, nicastrin, high mobility group box1, and receptor for advanced glycosylation end product proteins. In immunoprecipitation assay, γ-secretase complex was stably formed only in HFE-145^(shNKX6.3) cells. In gastric mucosae with atrophy, expression of Aβpeptide oligomer, ApoE, and Bace1 was detected and inversely correlated with NKX6.3 expression. AIM： To investigate whether S100A4 played an important role in the development or progression of colorectal cancer. METHODS： A total of 124 colorectal adenocarcinoma tissue specimens were analyzed by immunohistochemistry for the expression of S100A4 protein and subsequently investigated for the gene mutations in the coding region of S100A4 gene. The specimens were collected over a 3-year period in the laboratories at our large teaching hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea. RESULTS： Normal colonic epithelium either failed to express or showed focal weak expression of S100A4. Moderate to strong cytoplasmic expression of S100A4 was seen in 69 （55.6%） of the 124 colorectal carcinoma tissue specimens. S100A4 expression was detected in 43 （69.4%） of 62 specimens with lymph node metastasis. Statistically, overexpression of S100A4 was significantly associated with Dukes＇ stage and lymph node metastasis. Nuclear staining was also observed in 24 （19.4%） of 124 samples and closely associated with Dukes＇ stage. However, there was no significant correlation between overexpression of S100A4 and other investigated clinico-pathologic parameters, including tumor localization, tumor size, and survival period. In mutational analysis, no gene mutation was found in the analyzed genomic area of colorectal cancer. CONCLUSION： Overexpression of S100A4 may be closely related with the aggressiveness of colorectal carcinoma.

AIM： TO investigate whether krüppel-like factor 6 （KLF6） plays an important role in the development and/or progression of colorectal cancer. METHODS： A total of 123 formalin-fixed and paraffinembedded colorectal cancer specimens were analyzed by immunohistochemistry using tissue microarray for the expression of KLF6 protein. The specimens were collected over a 3-year period in the laboratories at our large teaching hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The correlation of KLF6 expression with clinicopathologic parameters was analyzed by χ^2 test and Bartholomew test. RESULTS： Normal colonic epithelium showed weak to moderate expression of KLF6, whereas reduced KLF 6 expression or loss of KLF6 expression was seen in 45 （36.6%） of the 123 colorectal carcinoma specimens. Interestingly, aberrant expression of KLF6 was detected in 25 （43.1%） of 58 cases with metastasis to regional lymph node and in 31 （47.0%） of 66 tumors more than 5 cm in size. Statistically, loss of KLF6 expression was significantly associated with tumor size （P〈0.05）. However, there was no significant correlation between KLF6 expression and Dukes＇ stage （Bartholomew test, P〉 0.05）, tumor location and lymph node metastasis （χ^2 test, P〉0.05）.CONCLUSION： Loss of KLF6 expression may be a common and early event in colorectal carcinogenesis.

AIM： To investigate clinical significance of Pin1 and β-catenin expression in colorectal cancers and to demonstrate the relationship of their expression. METHODS： The role of Pin1 and β-catenin protein in colorectal tumorigenesis and their clinicopathologic significance were analyzed by immunohistochemistry, and correlation between Pin1 and β-catenin protein expressions was also studied in 124 patients with colorectal cancer who were surgically treated. RESULTS： Normal colonic epithelium either failed to express or showed focal and weak expression of Pin1 and β-catenin. Overexpression of Pin1 and β-catenin protein was found in 23 （18.54%） and 50 （40.3%） of 124 colorectal cancers, respectively. Overexpression of both proteins was not related to the lymph node metastasis, tumor stage and survival period after excision. Survival analysis results indicated that tumor stage was a valuable predictor of survival. Interestingly, a significant correlation was found between Pin1 and β-catenin protein expression. CONCLUSION： Overexpression of Pin1 and β-catenin may be closely related with the development and/or progression of colorectal carcinoma and further supports that Pin1 overexpression might contribute to the upregulation of β-catenin.

Grade-4 commercially pure titanium with ultrahigh strength achieved by twinning-induced grain refinement through cryogenic deformation

The yield strength of commercially pure(CP) Ti of ASTM grade 4, the strongest among all the CP-Ti grades, is too low for structural applications that require high-strength materials. Here, we demonstrate the strengthening of grade-4 CP Ti by cryogenic-temperature rolling(CTR), which enables deformation twinning in grade-4 CP Ti to achieve twinning-induced grain refinement. CTR activated {11.22} twinning and {10.12} twinning, which are the most common twinning systems in pure Ti, whereas room-temperature rolling(RTR) did not activate any twinning system. CTR with imposing an area reduction of just 30% significantly increased the yield strength of the CP Ti to 946 MPa, which is not achievable through typical processes performed at or above room temperature and is comparable to that of commercial Ti-6 Al-4 V. The significant increase in strength was due to microstructural strengthening caused by twinning-induced grain refinement, combined with dislocation accumulation. In contrast to RTR, CTR greatly increased the stress concentration at grain boundaries(GBs), which caused the unusual activation of twinning in the grade-4 CP Ti by facilitating twin nucleation at GBs. The stress concentration increased because CTR activated the slip to a lesser extent compared to RTR, thereby reducing the strain compatibility between neighboring grains. These results will contribute to development of ultrahigh-strength CP Ti and may thereby extend its use to structural applications that require high-strength materials.

The segregation and diffusion of boron during heat treatments were studied. The influence of boron contents, aging time and applied stress on FeMo2B2 formation was also studied. Finally, the effects of boron contents and FeMo2B2 formation on the high temperature strength were studied. Boron atoms were segregated to prior austenite grain boundary during normalizing treatment. And these boron atoms were slowly diffused into the grain interior during tempering and aging at 700 ℃. The FeMo2B2 phase was only formed after 1,000 h aging at 700 ℃ in alloy containing 196 ppm boron. The formation of FeMo2B2 phase is accelerated by the applied stress. It was expected that the formation of FeMo2B2 is closely related to the redistribution of boron atoms. The tensile strengths at 700 ℃ are increased with the increase of boron contents. However, the formation of FeMo2B2 phase results in lower tensile strength.

Toward Systems Understanding of Leaf Senescence： An Integrated Multi-Omics Perspective on Leaf Senescence Research

Leaf senescence is a complex but tightly regulated developmental process involving a coordinated sequence of multiple molecular events, which ultimately leads to death of the leaf. Efforts to understand the mechanistic principles underlying leaf senescence have been largely made by transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic studies over the past decade. This review focuses on recent milestones in leaf senes- cence research obtained using multi-omics technologies, as well as future endeavors toward systems understanding of leaf senescence processes. In particular, we discuss recent advances in understanding molecular events during leaf senescence through genome-wide transcriptome analyses in Arabidopsis. We also describe comparative transcriptome analyses used to unveil the commonality and diversity of regulatory mechanisms governing leaf senescence in the plant kingdom. Finally, we provide current illustrations of epigenomic, proteomic, and metabolomic landscapes of leaf senescence. We envisage that integration of multi-omics leaf senescence data will enable us to address unresolved questions regarding leaf senescence, including determining the molecular principles that coordinate concurrent and ordered changes in biological events during leaf senescence.

Estimating horizontal winds in and around typhoons is important for improved monitoring and prediction of typhoons and mitigating their ***,we present a new algorithm for estimating typhoon winds using multiple satellite observations and its application to Typhoon Soulik(2018).Four kinds of satellite remote sensing data,along with their relationship to typhoon intensity,derived statistically from hundreds of historical typhoon cases,were merged into the final product of typhoon wind(MT wind):(1)geostationarysatellite-based infrared images(IR wind),(2)passive microwave sounder(MW wind),(3)feature-tracked atmospheric motion vectors,and (4)scatterometer-based sea surface winds(SSWs).The algorithm was applied to two cases(A and B)of Typhoon Soulik and validated against SSWs independently retrieved from active microwave synthetic aperture radar(SAR)and microwave radiometer(AMSR2)images,and vertical profiles of wind speed derived from reanalyzed data and dropsonde *** Case A(open ocean),the algorithm estimated the realistic maximum wind,radius of maximum wind,and radius of 15 m/s,which could not be estimated using the reanalysis data,demonstrating reasonable and practical ***,for Case B(when the typhoon rapidly weakened just before making landfall in the Korean Peninsula),the algorithm significantly overestimated the parameters,primarily due to the overestimation of typhoon *** study highlights that realistic typhoon winds can be monitored continuously in real-time using multiple satellite observations,particularly when typhoon intensity is reasonably well predicted,providing timely analysis results and products of operational importance.

Beetle wings are very specialized flight organs consisting of the veins and *** it is necessary from a bionic view to investigate the material properties of a beetle wing *** the present study,we have used a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique to measure the elastic modulus of a beetle wing *** were prepared by carefully cutting a beetle hind wing into 3.0 mm by 7.0 mm segments (the gage length was 5 mm).We used a scanning electron microscope for a precise measurement of the thickness of the beetle wing *** specimen was attached to a designed fixture to induce a uniform displacement by means of a *** used an ARAMISTM system based on the digital image correlation technique to measure the corresponding displacement of a *** thickness of the beetle wing varied at different points of the *** elastic modulus differed in relation to the membrane arrangement showing a structural anisotropy;the elastic modulus in the chordwise direction is approximately 2.65 GPa,which is three times larger than the elastic modulus in the spanwise direction of 0.84 *** a result,the digital image correlation-based ARAMIS system was suc- cessfully used to measure the elastic modulus of a beetle *** addition to membrane's elastic modulus,we considered the Poisson's ratio of the membrane and measured the elastic modulus of a vein using an Instron universal tensile *** result reveals the Poisson's ratio is nearly zero and the elastic modulus of a vein is about 11 GPa.
