Despite the many submarine telecommunications and power cables laid world-wide there are fewer than ten published studies of their environmental effects in the refereed *** paper describes an investigation into the effects of laying and operating the Basslink High Voltage Direct Current(HVDC)cable and its associated metallic return cable across Bass Strait in South East *** more than 95%of its length the cable was directly laid into a wet jetted trench given the predominantly soft sediments *** remote video investigations found that within two years all visible evidence of the cable and trench was gone at over a third of the transects at six deep water sites(32-72 m deep).At other deep water transects the residual trench trapped drift material providing habitat for the generally sparsely distributed benthic *** surveys at both of the near shore sites(m deep)on the northern side of the Strait also found the cable route was undetectable after a *** the southern side,where the cable traversed hard basalt rock near shore,it was encased in a protective cast iron half *** studies by divers over 3.5 years demonstrated the colonization of the hard shell by similar species occupying hard substrates elsewhere on the basalt *** field strengths associated with the operating cable were found to be within 0.8%of those predicted from theory with strength dropping rapidly with distance from the *** 20 m the field was indistinguishable from background.

Outcomes in Seriously Head-Injured Patients Undergoing Pre-Hospital Tracheal Intubation vs. Emergency Department Tracheal Intubation

Background: The optimal treatment of major head injuries in the resuscitative phase of care post-injury has yet to be determined. This study measured the effect on mortality of pre-hospital intubation (PHI) vs. emergency department in tubation (EDI) of patients suffering serious head injury. methods: In the single emergency medical services system for this Canadian province, we used a population-based trauma database, conventional logistic regression (with and without the use of a propensity score to control for selection effect bias) to evaluate the effect of PHI vs. EDI on in-hospital mortality. Inclusion criteria were age ≥ 16 years, serious head injury (Abbreviated Injury Score ≥ 3, non-penetrating trauma) and resuscitative intubation (PHI or EDI). Results: Over 5 years, 283 patients (2000-2005) met inclusion crite ria. Conventional unconditional logistic regression modelled on mortality with “PHI vs. EDI” as the intervention of interest showed an odds ratio of 2.015 (95% CI 1.062 3.825) for improved survival if these patients were intubated in the emergency department rather than in the pre-hospital phase of care. A propensity score adjustment demonstrated a similar but more conservative point estimate (OR 1.727, 95% CI: 0.993 3.004). Conclusions: This observational study demonstrated a survival advantage with EDI (versus PHI) in seriously head-injured patients in a mature, province-wide emergency medical services system.

microinjection of Ghrelin into the Ventral Tegmental Area Potentiates Cocaine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference

Prior work has shown that systemic cocaine pretreatment augments cocaine conditioned place preference (CPP) in rats. In contrast, ghrelin receptor antagonism attenuates cocaine and amphetamine-induced CPP. In order to further investigate ghrelin’s role in dopamine-mediated reward, the present report examined whether pretreament with ghrelin, administered directly into the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the midbrain, would potentiate the rewarding properties of cocaine as measured by CPP. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were given access to either side of the CPP chamber in order to determine initial side preferences. The rats were then restricted to either their non-preferred or preferred side over the course of conditioning which lasted for a total of 16 consecutive days. This was followed by a final test day to then reassess preference. On days where rats were confined to their non-preferred side, ghrelin (30-300 pmol) and cocaine (0.625-10 mg/kg IP) were administered immediately prior to the conditioning trial. On alternate days rats were treated with vehicle and placed into what was initially determined to be their preferred side. CPP was calculated as the difference in percentage of total time spent in the treatment-paired compartment during the post-conditioning session and the pre-conditioning session. Our results indicated that both cocaine and ghrelin elicited CPP and that ghrelin pretreatment potentiated the effect of cocaine on place preference. Overall, these findings provide additional support for the argument that ghrelin signaling within the VTA enhances the rewarding effects of psychostimulant compounds.

Background: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome(PRRS) is one of the most infectious swine diseases in the world, resulting in over 600 million dollars of economic loss in the USA alone. more recently, the USA swine industry has been having additional major economic losses due to the spread of porcine epidemic diarrhea(PED).However, information regarding the amount of genetic variation for response to diseases in reproductive sows is still very limited. The objectives of this study were to identify periods of infection with of PRRS virus(PRRSV) and/or PED virus(PEDV), and to estimate the impact their impact on the phenotypic and genetic reproductive performance of commercial ***: Disease(PRRS or PED) was significant(P mates for traits during Clean(without any disease), PRRS, and PED ranged from 0.01(number of mummies;Clean and PED) to 0.41(abortion;PED). Genetic correlations between traits within disease statuses ranged from-0.99(proportion born dead with number weaned;PRRS) to 0.99(number born dead with born alive;Clean). Within trait, between disease statuses, estimates ranged from-0.17(number weaned between PRRS and PED) to 0.99(abortion between Clean and PRRS).Conclusion: Results indicate that selection for improved performance during PRRS and PED in commercial sows is possible and would not negatively impact performance in Clean environments.

An Automated Brain Image Analysis System for Brain Cancer using Shearlets

In this paper,an Automated Brain Image Analysis(ABIA)system that classifies the magnetic Resonance Imaging(mRI)of human brain is *** classification of mRI images into normal or low grade or high grade plays a vital role for the early *** Non-Subsampled Shearlet Transform(NSST)that captures more visual information than conventional wavelet transforms is employed for feature *** the feature space of NSST is very high,a statistical t-test is applied to select the dominant directional sub-bands at each level of NSST decomposition based on sub-band energies.A combination of features that includes gray Level Co-occurrence matrix(GLCm)based features,Histograms of Positive Shearlet Coefficients(HPSC),and Histograms of Negative Shearlet Coefficients(HNSC)are *** combined feature set is utilized in the classification phase where a hybrid approach is designed with three classifiers;k-Nearest Neighbor(kNN),Naive Bayes(NB)and Support Vector machine(SVm)*** output of individual trained classifiers for a testing input is hybridized to take a final *** quantitative results of ABIA system on Repository of molecular Brain Neoplasia Data(REmBRANDT)database show the overall improved performance in comparison with a single classifier model with accuracy of 99% for normal/abnormal classification and 98% for low and high risk classification.
