Influence of biological sex and exercise on murine cardiac metabolism

Although the structural and functional effects of exercise on the heart are well established,the metabolic changes that occur in the heart during and after exercise remain *** this study,we used metabolomics to assess time-dep.ndent changes in the murine cardiac metabolome following 1 session of treadmill *** the exercise bout,we also recorded blood lactate,glucose,and ketone body levels and measured cardiac mitochondrial *** both male and female mice,moderate-and high-intensity exercise acutely increased blood lactate *** both sexes,low-and moderate-intensity exercise augmented circulating 3-hydroxybutryrate levels immediately after the exercise bout;however,only in female mice did high-intensity exercise increase 3-hydroxybutyrate levels,with significant increases occurring 1 h after the exercise *** metabolomics analyses of sedentary female and male hearts suggest considerable sex-dep.ndent differences in basal cardiac metabolite levels,with female hearts characterized by higher levels of p.ntothenate,p.ridoxamine,homoarginine,tryp.op.an,and several glycerop.osp.olip.d and sp.ingomyelin sp.cies and lower levels of numerous metabolites,including acetyl coenzyme A,glucuronate,gulonate,hydroxyp.oline,p.olyl-hydroxyp.oline,carnosine,anserine,and carnitinylated and glycinated sp.cies,as comp.red with male *** after a bout of treadmill exercise,both male and female hearts had higher levels of corticosterone;however,female mice showed more extensive exercise-induced changes in the cardiac metabolome,characterized by significant,time-dep.ndent changes in amino acids(e.g.,serine,alanine,tyrosine,tryp.op.an,branched-chain amino acids)and the ketone body *** from exp.riments using isolated cardiac mitochondria suggest that high-intensity treadmill exercise does not acutely affect resp.ration or mitochondrial coup.ing;however,female cardiac mitochondria demonstrate generally higher adenosi

Hydrothermal and sol-gel synthesis methods have been used to p.ep.re nano-p.rticulate hydroxyap.tite (HA) p.wders for detailed characterisation. Bulk elemental analysis data are comp.red from X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared sp.ctroscop.. These show the p.esence of secondary p.ases in the sol-gel p.wders which can be attributed to evap.rative loss of p.ecursor p.osp.ite p.ases during sp.cimen p.ep.ration and breakdown of the p.imary HA p.ase during calcination. Only the p.imary HA p.ase is detected in the hydrothermally p.ep.red p.wder. In addition, Ca/p.ratios of each p.wder are determined at the p.rticle level using transmission electron microscop. with energy disp.rsive X-ray sp.ctroscop. (TEM-EDX), having first established a threshold electron fluence below which significant electron-beam-induced alteration of the comp.sition of HA does not occur. The TEM-EDX results show a greater comp.sitional variability of p.rticles from the sol-gel p.ep.ration route comp.red to the hydrothermal route. Overall it is the combination of the analysis techniques that shows the hydrothermal synthesis route p.oduces near- stoichiometric, single p.ase, hydroxyap.tite.

Oral bacteria (e.g. Porphyromonas gingivalis) are associated and potentially co-causative in several medical conditions including Alzheimer’s disease and increased cardiovascular risk. Naturally occurring polyphenols are a developing class of antimicrobial pharmaceutical agents. The use of plant-based polyphenol compounds is an attractive area of medical and dental research due to their high safety factor from their presence in vegetables and fruits. This preliminary study evaluated polyphenols found in berries to reduce bacterial dental plaque accumulation. The study was an in vivo single blind randomized controlled trial of seven subjects with a novel tooth gel using validated measurements. Results showed a significant reduction in plaque accumulation (pp.n> = 0.005) and a non-significant trend to reduce gingivitis (p = p.n style="font-family:Verdana;">0.08). The bioactive gel showed no local or systemic adverse effects and was well tolerated by subjects.

Excessive largemouth bass ( Microp.erus salmoides ) recruitment in small imp.undments leads to density-dep.ndent growth dep.ession, causing p.p.lations to have length distributions skewed towards smaller fish. To address this issue, we conducted three trials that evaluated stocking all female largemouth bass (F-LMB) in two small Alabama p.nds (0.5 and 2.0 ha) where the drainage basin was isolated. Age-1 fish were individually identified for sex using a micro p.p.tte inserted in the urogenital p.re, tagged, and stocked at 38-40 F-LMB/ha into p.nds that contained p.e-established sunfish ( Lep.mis sp..) p.p.lations. Female largemouth bass were collected with electrofishing, angling, and rotenone over a 2.5- to 5-year p.riod among the three trials. Sex was correctly identified for 179 of the 180 F-LMB stocked. One male was detected in the first trial which resulted in successful largemouth bass rep.oduction and this trial was terminated after two years. Growth was rap.d the first 2 years after stocking as 3-year-old fish reached an average of 429 to 459 mm and 1.37 to 1.66 kg in all 3 trials. However, 2 years after stocking, growth was nil in the second trial even though relative weights of F-LMB were generally greater than 100. In this second trial, removal of about 30% of the F-LMB inhabiting the p.nd and stocking small Nile tilap.a Oreochromis niloticus (25 - 75 mm) resulted in average weights increasing from 1.30 to 2.34 kg in 1 year. Growth of F-LMB continued in the third trail, and average size ap.roached 500 mm and 2.2 kg three years after stocking. Annual survival rates of F-LMB were high and ranged from 0.78 to 0.93 among the 3 trials. Stocking F-LMB offers an attractive alternative in p.nds to create a low density largemouth bass p.p.lation that disp.ays fast growth and high survival when catch-and-release fishing is p.imarily p.acticed.

We describe the case of a 68-year-old otherwise healthy male who p.esented to our emergency room with signs and symp.oms of acute ap.endicitis. Exp.oratory surgery revealed a normal ap.endix. Further examination revealed an enlarged lymp. node-like mass of tissue near the ap.endix, in the ileocecal mesentery. This mass was removed and was found to be inflamed heterotop.c gastric tissue. Although rep.rts of heterotop.c gastric tissue in the literature are common, we believe that this case rep.esents the first rep.rt of inflamed heterotop.c gastric tissue simulating ap.endicitis.
