The opening and spreading of the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and South America evolved during the Early Cretaceous and were preceded by dramatic tholeiitic(mafic)magmatism and minor silicic and alkaline *** features are presently recognized from the equatorial regions of Brazil and Africa to the Falklands and South *** southeastern South America,continental flood basalts and related plumbing systems constitute the ParanáMagmatic Province(PMP),whose African counterpart is the Etendeka Magmatic Province(EMP).In northeastern Brazil,dike swarms and sill complexes compose the Equatorial Atlantic Magmatic Province(EQUAMP).As a common feature,these provinces are chemically represented by two prevalent magma types:(1)tholeiitic basalts and basaltic andesites with lowTi(TiO_(2)~2 wt.%)and incompatible element *** Ti tholeiites are relevant in the northern PMP and EMP,and dominant in *** rocks(SiO_(2)=57-65 wt.%)interpreted as byproducts of assimilation and/or fractional crystallization(AFC)processes from high Ti tholeiitic magmas,are scarce(but present)in all three *** accurate analysis of multivariable databases collected from the literature for dikes and sills,including major and trace element and radiogenic isotope data,reveals close similarities in their geochemical *** a paleogeographic reconstruction of West Gondwana,the intrusive remnants of the PMP,EMP and EQUAMP are spread over an area of nearly 10×10^(6)km^(2).forming perhaps the most extensive set of plumbing systems on Earth,with a relatively consistent chronology based on a vast collection of K-Ar and^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar data available in the *** work provides the first c

Adsorption of As on hydroxy-Fe-montmorillonite complexes

Arsenate has high affinity for soluble hydroxy-Fe species and Fe-oxyhydroxide pre-cipitates. In addition, the hydrolysis of Fe(III) and the growth of the initially precipitated Fe(III) phases are strongly influenced by the presence of montmorillonite. In this paper, the adsorption of As onto various hydroxy-Fe-montmorillonite (H-F-M) complexes was studied. Three systems of samples were prepared by mixing montmorillonite, hydroxy-Fe and arsenate in different se-quences: (1) Prior mixing of montmorillonite and hydroxy-Fe before the addition of arsenate; (2) prior mixing of hydroxy-Fe and arsenate before the addition of montmorillonite; and (3) prior mixing of montmorillonite and arsenate before the addition of hydroxy-Fe. For each system, the effects of pH, ionic strength, temperature, initial Fe and As concentrations and adsorption dura-tion on the overall uptake of As by H-F-M complexes were studied. Results showed that the up-take of As increased with increasing pH, temperature, initial Fe concentration and adsorption duration, and decreased with increasing ionic strength and initial As concentration to different extents for the three systems. The variation of the As uptake of H-F-M complexes with pH in the range of study is opposite to that reported previously for Fe-O-H systems in the absence of montmorillonite and similar to that reported for montmorillonite in the absence of hydroxy-Fe. The marked influence of ionic strength on the As uptake of H-F-M complexes indicates that outer-sphere complexation plays an important role. This is quite different from the adsorption of As on the surface of either Fe-oxyhydroxides or montmorillonite alone in which inner-sphere complexation dominates. Under all experimental conditions, the H-F-M complexes studied dis-played a very strong affinity for As, among which system 2 had the highest As adsorption capac-ity and system 1 the lowest. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided elastography in the nodal staging of oesophageal cancer

AIM： To assess quantitative endoscopic ultrasound （EUS）- guided elastography in the nodal staging of oesophago- gastric cancers.METHODS： This was a single tertiary centre study as- sessing 50 patients with established oesophago-gastric cancer undergoing EUS-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy （FNAB） of lymph nodes between July 2007 and July 2009. EUS-guided elastography of lymph nodes was performed before EUS-FNAB. Standard EUS charac- teristics were also described. Cytological determination of whether a lymph node was malignant or benign was used as the gold standard for this study. Comparisons of elastography and standard EUS characteristics were made between the cytologically benign and malignant nodes. The main outcome measure was the accuracy of elastography in differentiating between benign and malignant lymph nodes in oesophageal cancers.

Nutritional support teams increase percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy uptake in motor neuron disease

AIM:To examine factors influencing percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG) uptake and outcomes in motor neuron disease(MND) in a tertiary care ***:Case notes from all patients with a confirmed diagnosis of MND who had attended the clinic at the Repatriation General Hospital between January 2007 and January 2011 and who had since died,were *** were extracted for demographics(age and gender),disease characteristics(date of onset,bulbar or peripheral predominance,complications),date and nature of discussion of gastrostomy insertion,nutritional status [weight measurements,body mass index(BMI)],date of gastrostomy insertion and subsequent progress(duration of survival) and quality of life(QoL) [Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised(ALSFRS-R)].In addition,the type of clinician initiating the discussion regarding gastrostomy was recorded as Nutritional Support Team(involved in providing nutrition input viz Gastroenterologist,Speech Pathologist,Dietitian) and other(involved in non-nutritional aspects of patient care).Factors affecting placement and outcomes including length of survival,change in weight and QoL were ***:Case records were available for all 86 patients(49 men,mean age at diagnosis 66.4 years).Thirty-eight patients had bulbar symptoms and 48 had peripheral disease as their presenting ***-six patients reported ***-one patients had undergone gastrostomy *** major indications for PEG placement were dysphagia and weight *** patients required immediate full feeding,whereas 17 patients initially used the gastrostomy to supplement oral intake,4 for medication administration and 1 for *** the PEG regime met 73% ± 31% of the estimated total energy requirements,increasing to 87% ± 32% prior to *** was stabilization of weight in patients undergoing gastrostomy [BMI at 3 mo(22.6 ± 2.2 kg/m 2) and 6 mo(22.5 ± 2.0 kg/m 2) after PEG placement compared to

fraser Syndrome: Two millennia of cryptophthalmos from Pliny the Elder to FRAS, FREM and GRIP: A historical perspective

From its first description in antiquity, the place of cryptophthalmos in the history of medical genetics is briefly set out until, in the twentieth century, this rare constellation of multiple congenital malformations of which cryptophthalmos is the most striking, even though not obligatory, component, was identified as an inherited autosomal recessive condition. It was given the name of fraser syndrome and mutant alleles of the genes FRAS1, FREM2 and GRIP1 were identified as being responsible for a proportion of cases. In the remainder of cases, it may be supposed that mutant alleles of other genes, as yet unidentified, are responsible. In general, this association of multiple disparate malformations in an autosomal recessive condition may be expected to throw light on important aspects of gene action in embryogenesis. An aspect of medical genetics, which has become important with respect to the condition, is antenatal diagnosis with the prospect of abortion of affected fetuses.

Subtypes of functional dyspepsia

Functional dyspepsia is a common clinical condition characterised by chronic or recurrent upper abdominal pain or discomfort commonly associated with a variety of associated gastrointestinal symptoms and a normal endoscopy. To standardise research-based approaches, an initial categorisation of into sub groups was agreed to, based on clusters of symptoms. However the early expectation that these subgroups would be associated with distinct pathophysiologies amenable to specific therapy has not been realised. A classification based on the most troublesome symptom has been suggested but the utility of this is also unclear. More recent data suggest that some of the pathophysiologic dysfunctions may be associated with specific symptoms and so provide a better tool for grouping patients. But this approach remains incomplete as current insights into the pathogenesis are still too limited for this to be satisfactory. In conclusion, no classification provides for an adequate treatment-based approach to the syndrome of functional dyspepsia. As a consequence treatment remains largely empiric.

Effect of solution heat treatment and hot isostatic pressing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Hastelloy X manufactured by electron beam powder bed fusion

Prior to the application of AM components for critical applications,it is necessary to have a better understanding of the effect of different post-fabrication treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of such *** this study,efforts were made to achieve an in-depth understanding of the effect of post-fabrication Solution Heat Treatment(SHT)and Hot Isostatic Pressing(HIP)on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Hastelloy X parts built by electron beam powder bed fusion(PBF-EB)*** effects of SHT and HIP on porosity,microstructure,texture and mechanical properties have been investigated and compared with that of as-built PBF-EB Hastelloy ***-fabrication HIP treatment led to a significant reduction in the porosity content,whereas no notable difference in porosity was observed between SHT and as-built *** was no evidence of any recrystallization occurring following the post-fabrication treatments as elongated columnar grain structures observed within as-built part were found to be maintained even after SHT and HIP process alongside the strongcrystallographic *** was laid upon understanding the influence of SHT and HIP on mechanical properties through stress-strain curves and work-hardening behaviour.
